What clubs in your bag are irreplacable?

GoldenAges

Recommended Posts

I enjoy reading about what equipment WRX'ers like the most, so I thought a thread about which clubs are irreplacable in your bag would be good. These are clubs that you would never willingly replace. Eventually all clubs wear out.

I'll start off.

#1 IRONS. Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal Pro 5-GW. Projext X LZ 5.5 Blacked Out. Lamkin Crossline.

In 45 years of golf never had irons as effective. These are my #1 keepers in the bag. If I tried to list all the reasons I like them we'd be here all day.

#2 FAIRWAY WOOD

Callaway OG Apex UW 21 Degrees. Mitsubishi Diamana Blue S-70. Lamkin Crossline.

I've never carried higher lofted fairway woods because they seem to balloon on me, and as technology develops and they put the weight lower and back more, the problem compounds. The Apex UW is a unicorn. I get the high launch with a penetrating ball flight, and ease of use. BTW I can't even swing a hybrid. A hybrid to me is a golf club with an identity issue. It doesnt know if it wants to be an iron or a wood and they don't fit my eye, so the UW is my perfect match.

#3 WEDGES

Mizuno S23 52-10 and 54-10 bent to 56-12. KBS HI-REV 2.0. Lamkin 2 Tone.

I have had these in the bag for awhile now but just recently started using them around the greens, and l've shaved a few strokes around the greens. I had been using my Vokey 60 for all these greenside shots but found with a few practice sessions with the Mizunos I'm getting much more consistency.

No such thing as an irreplaceable club, but I'll never sell my Cobra F6 Baffler. It may not always stay in the bag, but won't ever be too far away.

The closest club I had to being irreplaceable was a Nike VR LTD Pro 5-wood with an Elements Chrome shaft. Had it for YEARS. I never missed with that club. But what can I say? I'm an idiot, got rid of it. The Titleist that eventually settled in my bag does 90% of what the Nike did for me.

Presuming a golfer and able to adjust to change, eventually, all clubs are replaceable.  I don't like changing irons or wedges, but it's happened.

Over my golf life, my favorite clubs have been a custom set of MacGregor 1025 MB irons, original Snake Eye wedges, and a 2018, 718 TMB 17' 2 iron, which finds its way back into the bag rather often even though the new T200 17' 2iron is longer.

All clubs are on notice.  The first sign of misbehaving they may get cut from the roster with no warning.

They are all replaceable on a whim, but I’m pretty satisfied with my current setup.

My current Dynacraft Prophet Muscle Blades would be the closest things to irreplaceable at the moment. Two months in, and they have been absolute game changers.

My bag is largely becoming a bag of irreplaceables but the true ones are my OG Apex UW 17°, just so good as a 3 wood.

My Cleveland Smart Sole G and S wedges, had a version in the bag since about 2012 or so.

Lab DF2.1, this could maybe be replaced at some point but by a Lab putter, can't see myself using something other than a Lab ever again.

I feel like my Mizuno Pro 225 2 iron is going to be irreplaceable but still early days.

My Mizuno MP18 2 iron was the only club that was safe from the threat of being thrown out or put on eBay…until last year when the shaft snapped mid tee shot (literally on the downswing the head just went flying and found it had just given way) and I’ve never been able to find the same shaft since (old style San Diego prototype PX hzrdus). Still haunts me to this day and still can’t find a suitable replacement.

Putter isn't going anywhere. It'll only be retired when I want to maintain it's condition for sentimental reasons at which point I'll spec out another one similar to this one

None are completely safe. The closest would be my irons as those have been custom fit, then my 56° wedge. Then the top end of the bag is pretty secure. The club that's in and out of the bag the most is the 60° because I like to tinker and that allows me to test.

I will say that they're all pretty safe. They still seem to perform well, and frankly, I've gotten to the point with tinkering that the money spent would probably be better spent on a trip to another course. The main reason I would swap some stuff would be for traveling and I wouldn't want to risk my expensive aftermarket shaft or my Odyssey putter. I suppose the next purchase I might make would be some inexpensive component irons but those would also be simply backups.

Nothing is safe in my bag even if I say it's safe. My 3H I do love but ready to drop it if I find a fairway that works better.
