Iron Shopping

Sorry for the length of this post, but I want to get all the info out there to get the best advice.  I am 56 and have been playing most of my life.  I am an above average ball striker but generally score between 85-95 due to inconsistency and short game woes.  I hit several shots a round that are superior to most players of my handicap.  But then I generally incur 5-6 penalty strokes per round due to errant shots.  For the last 5 years I played a used set of Titelist 405 OS irons.  The 5 years prior to that I played a standard set of Golfsmith Tour Cavity Pro irons.  Both as older clubs have more traditional lofts.  I hit my 7 iron about 160.  I bought  the Titlelists because I wanted to play an OEM club and I got a great deal on them. After doing some research though I came to the conclusion that their big offset was causing me issues with pulling shots to the right so I am wanting to go with a more conservative offset.  I prefer the look of my Golfsmith Tour Cavity Pro with the thinner sole and thinner top line.  I purchased a set of Giga Golf c510’s last year and just can’t hit them right. They are about 10-15 yards shorter than both my Golfsmith and Titelists, even with similar lofts.

So I am in the market again and I want to get newer technology, but I also prefer the sleeker look of a traditional CB with a thin top line.  I don’t like the bulky low cavity of most game improvement irons.  In addition as a teacher I simply cannot justify spending even $700 on a new set of irons since I only play 15-20 rounds a year.  I have looked at Maltby, Tacoma, Sub 70, and the Ram FX 77.  I don’t want to make another purchase that I regret.  Any insight on what irons seem to fit my game would be appreciated.  I have a fairly high swing speed and play stiff flex shafts.

If both these statements are true it is very likely not your irons. The same clubs that produce your best shots should not be blamed for your worst ones.

Maybe look at your pre-shot process including getting set up and aimed correctly at your target. Five or six penalty shots per round is a TON. Chances are you are having issues getting oriented to your target line and blaming the clubs when your shot goes where you aimed it.

I am not blaming the clubs at all.  It is all me. Lol.  A good portion of my penalty strokes come from errant drives.  I am just in the market because the performance of the c510's I bought was not up to par with my older clubs.  I would prefer to get newer technology than keep hitting my 23 year Golfsmith irons.  With the c510's I actually had fewer errant shots, but no tremendous shots.  Even when I felt like a flushed it I was coming up short.  I started clubbing up one, but still just didn't get the same feel. Went back to my Golfsmith's and my yardage and feel returned.

One of the points made in the book How to Swing like a Pro IIRC is that most people’s bad shots and poor shots are essentially the same, with the good or bad outcome being due to look.

To know what clubs are good for you in any objective sense you need to start with an analysis of your swing, not how many shots that you like you make but how your club interacts with the ball.  If it interacts improperly, a common impulse is to want to gets clubs that compensate for that, and go in the “forgiving” direction.  Unfortunately the characteristics of “forgiving” seem to be aesthetically unpleasing to those who want it.

But if you swing fast enough to put some spin on the ball, here you go, the old model Wilson Staff CB:

Before you do anything, I'd check the lofts on your Golfsmith irons and compare to your Giga Golf irons.  I googled the Golfsmith irons and the 7 iron is supposed to be 35*, but it sounds like you got them used if you were only playing them from about 10 years ago, when the irons were released in 2001.  If you bought used or got them as a hand me down, very possible the irons were bent strong, and that the 10 yard difference may be simply due to 33* vs 36* of loft in your 7 iron now.

I think my long initial post was probably hard to keep straight.  I bought the Golfsmith's used, but it was in the early 2000's (not sure the exact year, may have actually been 2001).  They were at Golfsmith.  They were used but looked like they had never been hit.  They were listed as standard length, loft, and lie on the shelf.  Since I am 5'11 1/2, I figured the standard was just fine for me.  I played them until 2013, when I bought a used set of Titelist 804 OS.  I played them until Summer 2023.  That is when I bought the Giga Golf c510's.  I played the c510's until a few weeks ago, probably 10 total rounds, and 4-5 trips to the range.  I am a teacher so mostly golf in the summer.  I was not pleased with my iron play with the c510's so I went back to my Golfsmiths.  The reason I didn't go back to the Titelists is because they have a much greater offset, and I want to get away from playing those.

I went to the range today and used a trackman to get some data points for all three sets of irons with the 4-6-8.  The c510's were the shortest, but it was not as pronounced as it seemed to be when I played them on the course.  I was averaging about 3-5 yards less than the Golfsmiths and about 4-6 yards less than the 804 OS's.  I was also less accurate with the c510's.  Had a much greater tendency to block shots to the right.  Pulled more to the left with the 804 OS's and was most consistent with the Golfsmiths.  But when I absolutely flushed a shot with all the clubs, the Golfsmith's and 804 OS's went about 8-10 yards farther than the c510's.

On a positive note, I hit the c510's better today than I have ever hit them.  I could definitely game them, and just adjust my yardage expectations and be fine.  But I hit the Golfsmith's so well, there is just no reason to play the c510's over them, other than they are newer and shinier, and I just paid $450 for them last year.  I do feel like I am not really in the market for irons after today though.  My only reason for doing it would be to have new irons.  I doubt that I would play any better if I bought a set of Matlby's, or Tacomo's, or Sub 70's.  And I don't have the money to go get fitted for OEM's.

Tons of solid options in the CB category released in the early to mid 2010’s. (golden era of CB’s in my mind)

Look for a good condition used set. I’ve built plenty of custom sets over the last 3 years and none of them have cost me more than 800$. That’s heads, grips, shafts, and custom ferrules included.

some of my favs include:

Bridgestone J15 CB

Bridgestone J40 DCB

Ping S55

Ping I-Blade

Taylormade Tour Preferred MC or CB

Taylormade p760
