Titleist U505

Recommended Posts

Looking to purchase a Titleist u505 to replace my hybrid. How it is out of the rough? I use my hybrid a ton out of the rough but I'm starting to like the look of an iron much better than a hybrid. Does it perform well out of the rough?

Let me know your thoughts.

Driving irons/iron hybrids in general i find nowhere near as good out of the rough. They aren't as forgiving all over the face as a true hybrid and out of the rough your contact can be spotty

I have a U505 and a Srixon ZX. It's not even close out of the rough.

I cannot hit hybrid and that is why I am bagging the u505.

However, to be honest, it is not great out of the rough. (of course it might be only my shortage)

Funny, I was just looking at one of these yesterday. The 2021 version can be found in the $120-150 range in barely used condition. Tried a handful of test hits in the shop, and found it to be way more forgiving than the iCrossover or Pro Fli-Hi.

I have never found a hybrid that I'm all that comfortable with. At this point I pretty much only use my 19* hybrid for getting out of jail, hitting low punch shots out of the trees. I never pull it on the tee, and rarely from anywhere else. But I feel pretty comfortable with long irons. So I either step on my 5 iron or choke up on 5-wood if I'm in between distances.

I am thinking it would be a good tradeoff to get another tee option and have some confidence from the fairway, while giving up some performance from the rough. I'm sure it will still work for punching out of trees.

Just my 2 cents - Like you I much prefer iron look. I have a weird enjoyment of looking at a lil butterknife 2/3 iron...was a DI guy for a while and recently went hybrid. While I absolutely love DI, it proved too one-dimensional for me in that it only really produced the low piercing flight good for tee shots and layups. Hybrid much better for approach shots + out of rough while still being good off the tee. Maybe a few yd shorter due to less roll out, but I'm not pulling hybrid on the tee for distance's sake

I'm a +1.7 right now and play MP241s (one of the smaller blades on the market)---And i approve this message LOL

No one is making perfect contact out of the rough and hybrids are WAYYYYY better

The ongoing dilemma! I have u505, the 2021 version in 3 iron and the current version in 2UI. They’re great clubs, they compete in my bag with Srixon Mkii 2H and 4H.

In theory I should hit hybrids better right? In reality, if my 16 handicap swing is on I hit the utility at least as good and I prefer the look of the iron. With regard to rough, the hybrid wins. I tend to play the hybrids in winter and the utilities in summer, if that helps.

3UI = Srixon ZX Mkii w Recoil Dart 90 F4
5-PW = XXIO X 12 w N.S. Pro 950GH Neo DST

Wedges = Cobra Snakebite 48 | 52 | 58

Putter = Wilson Staff 8802, 2024 version

  • 3 weeks later...

For me, older vs. younger 505s, with the same Atmos Red TS, they both feel extremely solid when hit in/around the screws, but the new model had some nice cosmetic improvements. Both generations are great off the tee, solid off a decent line from the fairway. nice out of the right type of bunker. I would tend to use my TSR2 hybrid out of the long grass. The new 505 seems to be a bit more stable on miss hits.

I've really struggled out of the rough with mine compared to a Hybrid. For me it generally serves a second serve style tee option, and I absolutely adore it for that.

Have certainly heard others who love hitting them out of anything though.

I get juiced up whenever I see a u505 post as of recent 🤣

Late last year I added the new version of the u505 4i in the bag. Over the past 1-2 seasons I just wasn't confident standing over the ball with a hybrid, never knew where the ball was going to go.

I was never all that confident with a 4i in my hand which is why I had 4 and 3 hybrids in the bag. I can honestly say I've never felt more confident with a 4i in my hands since moving to the u505. I even added the 3i to the bag this past spring. They are great tee clubs and great of the fairway with the new sole, I never think twice about swinging one in the fairway. Long grass they are just fine, like someone said above, no one makes perfect contact out of the rough. If you have a buried lie out of the rough are you really trying to whack it with a long club? YMMV as I am playing in Michigan.

I don't see myself getting rid of the 4i and 3i for a while as my long iron game has never been better and straighter. I highly recommend trying them out if you're thinking about it. They're a ton of fun to hit.

I didn't like how they designed the U505, so went with the new T200 17' 2 iron and just had a Fujikura Pro 95i Tour stiff installed at 39.75".  Unless the rough is short or nonexistent, I very rarely use it out of the rough.  It's much easier to use T100 3i, 4i, or 5i.

Plus, playing out of deep rough in hopes of reaching the green, is like fool's gold.  😛

Own both the 2021 and 2023.  Similar feel but slight edge to 2023 version.  2021 has more offset.

Both are great.  I find them easy to hit off the tee or deck.  I can hit a hybrid, just not consistently.  The 3 iron 505 has been great for me.

Which version would you say is better from the fairway

I’m thinking of picking up the u505 4 iron to replace my T200 4 iron. I hit the T200 fine but would like a little more launch to help with carry.

You would want to look at the u510.  The difference in launch between the 505 and 510 is night and day.

Consider the T350.  I just added the 4 iron (2 degrees weak) to my set of T150s.  Ball goes high and straight and visually its less chonky.
