Will Scotty Cameron Ever Make Cool Putters Again?

StoutKing

Recommended Posts

Local golf shop said recently that they've never had so many Scotty Camerons in stock.  That people aren't just buying them as much as they used to.  It got me thinking that I haven't had the desire to buy one in the last couple years either.  Even the putters in the Gallery emails I get every week aren't as appealing as they used to be.  What would make Camerons more desirable again?  Maybe some carbon models in black oxide?  Or a nice milled plumber's neck mallet?  Maybe Tiger needs to start putting well again.  He was a lot of the reason people liked Camerons including me.  Scotty's got to be in his early 70's now.  Maybe he will create another nice retail lineup before he hangs it up.

Well, assuming the anecdotal observation actually indicates a sales decline I’d say it’s  because:
a) It’s the same old stuff

b) A really dominant Tour player needs to use the stuff

c)  He’s finally reached the price where given a) and b), it’s giving people pause to make a purchase.

Golfers know a SC putter doesn’t perform better than any other putter. SC putters are cool because Woods used one, SC has a big Tour presence, and “serious” players bag them.

So, pretty much just restating and agreeing with the OP post.

"Get dressed Spaulding, you're playing golf today."
" No I'm not Grandpa, I'm playing tennis."
"No, you're playing golf and you're going to like it."

Everyone has a different opinion on the best scotty line but for me the issue Scotty has is the tour. Most people now use mallet putters and scottys just aren’t as popular when that happens. All your big name popular players use some sort of mallet or funky armlock now, so those not on golfwrx that are more easily influenced then switch to try what their favourite pro uses.

At some point a player will become dominant with a blade again and Scotty will come back to being popular. However all the better putters in my club use Scotty blades, many of them older models they’ve had since new.

With Ping, Callaway/Odyssey, TaylorMade, Mizuno, Betti, ect... all producing very nice milled putters, Scotty Cameron's are just another putter now. Not to mention, social media and the prevalence of extremely nice micro manufacturered putters is cutting into those sales as well.

But let's face it, TOUR presence is ultimately going to drive the mass market sales. Taylormade and Odyssey are just dominating the TV screen right now.

IMHO, I think if Scotty Cameron wants to boost sales they can do it two ways. First, lower the base price of a standard putter to around the $350-400 mark. Second, offer more hosel and alightment options on standard putters at no upcharge. I mean, if I can walk into a golf shop and order a Newport 2 with a flow neck and a sight dot only for $400 I'd be there tomorrow.

It comes down to being over priced.  I putt just as well (or better) with my Ping putter that cost me less than 1/2 of what a SC costs.  There is nothing wrong with the designs.  They are excellent but no longer justifiable at that price.  "Oooohhhh, look everyone!  I've got the same putter as JT."  Yawn.🥱

No he won't what everyone is asking for costs extra and eats into his bottom line and Titleist's bottom line.

- Will never see carbon on a retail line probably ever again since people don't know how to take care of them.

- Black finishes on blades will be reserved for LE putters or CT putter.

- Cherry Bombs will stay, Scotty hates them but marketing/advertising department want to keep them because people see them and know the putter.

- Plumber Neck mallets are super expensive to mill and will raise cost and not be worth it, most complain about prices now those easily could be 100-200 more if part of the Phantom line.

I'm sure if Scotty was on his own it would be different but he's under a parent brand and their bottom line is obviously the most important thing. I know people want a lot here but this is a small drop in the bucket, the masses will buy whatever he puts out because "It's a Scotty they're the best".

Not playing a Scotty but I think he gets a bad rap. There’s a lot of golf equipment produced today. Seems to be more of everything. I would not assume Cameron putters are not selling. The fact that they have not made drastic changes is evidence that they’re still selling well, if not at peak levels as during Tiger’s glory days. Are Vokey wedges changing a lot? Doesn’t seem like they hardly change at all. So I don’t know how we can really know the sales figures. The stores I go to, certain Cameron models are almost always gone.

I really like SC blades but haven’t cared for his recent mallets. How are we defining cool? The Newport, Newport 2, 2.5 and the “plus” models of those heads — along with the mid-mallet Squareback —  look great and roll very nicely. The 2.5 is my favorite for how it seems to hug the ground at address. Those look cool to me. Are the prices any different from Bettinardi, Toulon, EVNRoll, Odyssey AI One Milled, TaylorMade TP Reserve? SeeMore putters cost $400.

You can easily drop $900 on a LAB Golf putter and those are the opposite of cool. Are Logan Olson Anser-style heads cool? They cost a fortune. Those would top my list of overrated putters relative to cost.

Agree with you there.  If I could order a 5.5 with the plumbers neck like Koepka has been using, I would have been there yesterday to place an order.  More hosel/alignment options would be great.

The current Scotty lines are made bland intentionally. He knows that some (not all) customers will send it right to his custom shop to get a nice grip, headcover and some colorful paintfill for a few hundred dollars extra. The lack of detail on the new putter lines just make it easier and faster to paint and ship out.

Maybe make a higher end "Titleist by SC" line with the cool stuff like PN mallets.  I'd consider them.  Hell, I spent a lot of my Toulon 7 PN.

That's taken care of by all of the LE drop and whatever he decides to call them plus his LE's don't have Titleist on them and probably won't plus does he need another line? If anything he just points people towards a Circle T.

I don’t doubt you. Other putters are nice too. I would expect LAB to be way up there in terms of taking market share. Will it hold? Time will tell. I can say, as one who went for a DF3 and then returned it, the PGASS salesman told me it is their most-returned putter under the 90-day playability. Now, obviously they are selling a ton for that to be true, and I don’t know by percentage of sales where it would rank in returns. He said the reason I gave is one they hear a lot, “It’s just too jarring a change.”

Clearly people are trying other putters. And I am a pretty good putter, but there’s always room for improvement. I found I was not interested in changing my mechanics to the degree required. It was still worth a try. The drills they have are good, will help with any putter. But I absolutely putt better with more conventional designs and I’ve almost purchased a 2.5-plus a few times. I’ve decided putting has to be natural and it’s best to build on that. You get me to thinking too much, I find I don’t putt as well.

I literally think that, to make Scotty Cameron the biggest and best putter company “once again”, they would have to buy LAB and incorporate their tech and branding into those putters.

To me, they feel outdated and uninspired - and have for over 10 years.  I loved the snowflake, the oil can, and pro platinum lines.  But ever since then, literally everything has been meh at best.

There are cool Scotty putters, we see them on tour and on Golf WRX WITB's, but they never make it to retail.

If their strategy is to make more retail sales, it doesn't make sense.

So, their strategy must be to prioritize special Tour models, over retail sales.  Otherwise, we would see retail models better resemble the more coveted tour models.

I know you love LAB but those 2 brands mix like Oil and Water. Scotty wouldn't abandon his styling and philosophy for LAB's styling and philosophy, despite what people here say and see he's still selling putters, he's still popular on tour and I'm sure most people would want a Scotty at some point.

Other brands would be more interested in LAB over Titleist.

Interestingly enough you can balance a putter line a LAB without sacrificing looks. I did it with one of my own putters - you do however lose all individual fitting properties, which is what makes LAB viable.

Scotty could absolutely offer a lie-angle balanced putter without all the custom fitting options except length... but we already know he's going to stick to the Xerox method.
