Could Blades be more forgiving for me than a modern players iron?

Recommended Posts

My AOA is 0 to +1 with a 7iron. To say I am a picker is an understatement. I have been messing around with Players irons (currently King Tours 23 version). I miss that sweet feeling of hitting my irons on the 3rd to4th groove. I played my best golf with mizzy and/or 18 Cally blades. I made the switch toa more forgiving iron because I was looking for some help on mishits. Could a blade actually be more forgiving for me? I tried the T100's but ever the feel of them (for me) is just way too harsh, but the sole is closer.

LOL... As much as I can for a 52 year old lol... I know what you are saying though. I think so I do know that with a blade right when I hit it I knew where it was going. I feel sometimes with the other sets of irons I could get that flyer every once in awhile.

@Wardonation - Generally, no.

I, too, am a sweeper/picker and played mostly blades since the 90s, haven't found any of them more forgiving than players irons.  That said, I played 620 MBs from 2019 until my new T100 irons arrived in Aug 2023.   Player iron help on T100 iron mishits is barely negligible like T200 or T350 help.  The only part of T100 heads I don't care for is the sole width.  As a sweeper/picker a sharp leading edge and narrow sole fits me better.

My mishit result with T100 is similar to 620 MB irons; still straight but short of expected yardage, 10-20yds, and that has everything to do with reduced SS.  Also, properly struck, the new T100 irons feel fairly similar to the 620 MB and 620 CB sets; I have both.

I'm a firm believer that every player has an optimal balance of workability and forgiveness that is unique to that individual.

I've been scoring better this year after switching to slightly less forgiving iron due to the fact that I'm hitting more good shots into a makeable range and converting. My bad shots are also finishing a little further away, but not enough to impact my overall putting negatively.

An ex club champ at my course recently switched out his blades for more forgiving irons trying to pick up extra distance and is not scoring nearly as well as he was before his switch.

For the last 18 years, I happily went from MP-64's to Miura CB-57's and a year ago I reactivated my MP-33's.

Then someone I respect said that the Srixon ZX 5/7 combo sets were pretty amazing in forgiveness and consistency.

On a lark, I gave them a try.  I was more than impressed and surprised at the technology and feel.

So, I would generally say no, blades are no way more forgiving than today's players irons.  But, can a really good ball striker work the ball at higher levels with good blades?   Yes.  But, even for pros, there will also be more mishits with the blades.

Blades more forgiving? No.

Blades a better fit? Maybe.

Im not quite as shallow as you, but I am very neutral at impact. With most tech-packed irons I've tried, I see my spin rates drop lower than I want and my launch angles get higher. Shots get a bit floaty and its almost like catching fliers but off standard lies. My distance dispersion goes down and becomes two sided with the potential for rockets sneaking into the picture leaving a long miss. With blades, which usually are higher spin biased designs, I see much more consistent spin rates on average to good strikes and a distance dispersion that is narrower and one-sided (only short, never randomly long). I've never done the analysis, though I certainly should, to see which dispersion circle is smaller (I have a hunch it could be the GI irons), but on the course I've always preferred the shape and bias (wider w/ narrow depth & never long) of my dispersion circle with blades to GI type irons. Between that and seeing a more neutral flight window I think the blades are a better fit for me, but I don't think they're more forgiving.

Maybe try a set of i230s with the retro lofts... basically what you're asking for is more spin consistency, but keeping some of the forgiveness, and distance dispersion of a blade. That's probably about as close as you're going to come to what you want.

Your other option is more of the CBish options out there: T100/Wilson CB/Cobra Tour or CB/Callaway Apex Tour or CB/etc.

I think your choices are Limit3d. Highest MOI and lowest VCoG of that head shape ever.

I am older than dirt and grew up playing the game on un-irrigated, hard pan courses.  In those days, taking a divot was a quick way to excruciating wrist and elbow pain, so I learned to pick the ball.  Fast forward 60 years or so, and I still barely bruise the grass when taking a swing.

While blades are not more forgiving, your miss is likely vertical instead of horizontal.  Meaning that you thin or chunk when your having an off day, instead of a toe-heel variation like most of golfers.  Personally, my swing requires a very thin sole with low bounce.

As some others have stated, blades aren't more forgiving, they just might fit your natural swing better.

Maltby TS4 😉

I love my Maltby TEs but they arent blade..... its literally a forged CB that plays like a super game improvement clubs without the "hot" shots I get from the hollow cavity type clubs

I wish coolclubs or someone else would do a robotic test comparing a muscle back blade, a one piece cavity, a hollow players iron, a game improvement iron, and a Ping Eye2. The test would show center, heel, toe, high toe, high center, high heel, low toe, low center, and low heel. All clubs set up with the same lofts, shaft, and length. Maybe this would finally once and for all settle the debate.

The problem is that there are many different sweet-spot (COG) locations within all those categories.  So if they don't know where it is exactly, it won't be an accurate comparison

That’s kind of the purpose of the test. By testing all the strike locations the data would show the difference in performance.

Sure, if they analyze it based on measured COG locations.  However, if they only analyze based on assigned general categories such as "game improvement" and "one piece cavity", then it's very limited
