Iron bending issue p7TW

Recommended Posts

So I recently purchased a set of p7tw’s and when I went to get them regripped I had the lofts checked and they are all jacked up. They were sold to me as standard and they certainly not. I’m thinking about keeping them and bending them back to 1* weaker than standard. Which would mean making the Pw 48* and having it bent nearly 4*.

The question is that safe? Will they break? Will they look weird? Just trying to figure out whether I should just return them for a refund from the seller and find another set or if it’s worth it to bend them back and have the seller send me some money back.

Attached are the actual lofts. The tech at the store seemed very skilled and assumed me they could do it but I want a second opinion.

I would make adjustments based on ball flight and carry distance on a club by club basis.

If the club is hitting the correct distance and the ball flight is good then don't touch it.

I understand, but this is not my first set of p7tw’s so I know my distances. I got these for the shaft and was already fitted based on standard specs. The question is geared toward what is safe for the heads and what makes the most sense in this situation.

My first thought, the seller may have bought them used, and didn't know they were set strong; just had issues with them and decided to sell, or he had them bent strong and didn't like the result.  Which ever it was, I wouldn't just have them delofted, not before you have a range session with them to see where YOUR mechanics need them to be set at.

That’s really strong.

as others said I would hit them off turf out doors.  Those irons are 3-4 degrees strong and for an already low bounce iron could lead to weird turf interaction.

That being said those are an extremely easy to bend iron.  An experienced builder should be able to move them back to standard at a minimum.

Thanks, as stated, I have played the p7tw for about 4 years now. I know my flights… I got them bc I wanted to change the shaft and wanted a slighter newer set. I did hit the 7 iron on the simulator after they measured it bc I didn’t believe it, but sure enough I was hitting the 7 iron about 12+ yds further. That would leave a HUGE gap between the Pw and my gap wedge.

That all makes sense.

my recommendations is to find a club builder you trust and ask them how comfortable they are bending them.  The good ones won’t bend them if there is risk.

Those lofts are bent really strong.  The PW for retail TW sets are 47d.  Bending them back shouldn't be a problem to any competent clubmaker as those heads are forged in carbon steel.  Please note that the bounce will increase by the same amount as you weaken the lofts.

If they were measured as that strong and seller did not disclose, personally would not attempt to alter in any manner and return them as any attempt to alter or play them could change status of return availability.

Thats so strong it makes me think that the person measuring them might not know 100% what they are doing

Yeah I didn’t believe it at first either. But the manager put his personal Wilson staff blades on the Mitchell machine and showed me mine against his with every club. He was right without question. After looking closely at the hosel I did see some bending marks.

Update: The seller and I agreed on a partial refund. He gave me back enough to justify keeping them and bending them back to the specs I want. So I think it was fair. I am quite sure the seller did not know they were bent as he bought them on the secondary market as well. Looks like this will work out fine at the end of the day. I’m actually kind of excited to get the lofts exactly where I want them.

Glad to read you came to a mutually acceptable solution- looking forward to your impressions after you get them sorted.

Good job on the refund negotiations and fair play by the seller!

If I were you I’d take my main set there (or just one iron) and have the guy check its loft, too. That’s a 2nd reference you can trust. I’m sure he’ll understand that you are a little hesitant, and will do that for you without feeling doubted. It’s a service and if you’re friendly and explain how the huge loft difference makes you uncomfortable and you want to be 100% sure, and that 2nd ref could give you confidence, then everyone‘s happy.

I too think bending them back should be no problem, but the plating might suffer.

Good luck!

Got my irons back today. They turned out great. If you look closely, you can see a little bit of stretching/distortion on some of the hosels, but nothing you would ever notice unless you were looking specifically and closely for it. I also had them throw them on the Mitchell machine one more time before I left and the lofts are on the money. 48° PW with 4° gaps down to the 4i. At the end of the day, I’m actually very happy it turned out this way. I got some money back and I got the lofts I really always wanted, which was 1° weaker throughout.

Enjoy!

I have a set that are 1-2 degrees weak and they are fun to play!
