It is like beating a dead horse . . . slow play on the Tour

There are several players that I like, but good grief they take forever.  Tom Kim is another example, along with Xander, and Harman to name just a few.  Scottie plays quickly and Aberg is even quicker.  The guys who fidget and stand over the ball forever are tough to watch.  Rather than a pre-shot routine, it is like a ritual.

The PGAT simply doesn't care.  All they do is run reports at the end of events, then feed that info to players, and occasionally fine them behind the scenes.  Apparently the reports were worded so poorly, a player that was at the top of the slow play report thought that meant he was one of the fastest players.  And didn't understand why he was being fined again.

Meanwhile on the LPGA Tour, they had multiple groups warned each day this weekend, including the final group on Sunday where the winner was warned as she came off the 16th green, then sped up her pre-shot routine and put her 17th tee shot into water.  I heard twice during the LIV event of groups getting warned.

The tour has alloted tv time, golf is going to end at that time.

Besides when it comes to tv there is no slow play on tour. You’re watching golf shots from different groups throughout the coverage and not a single group. If the producers feel something is taking to long they cut away to another shot then come back.

Absolutely! People need to slow down and smell the roses (sarcasm)🤣 40% percent of golf is putting, posters need to chill (I kid)....

Wish I could putt like any of those guys......

I really don't care ... until it starts effecting my rounds when the guy shooting 110 is emulating their pre shot routine.

Slow play only sucks if it bleeds over into real life and guys taking forever out at your local muni and making 5 hour rounds the norm. But i've never really understood why anyone cares all that much about slow play on tour? Do you want the broadcast to be over sooner, because I certainly don't. I'm more than fine if every tour round takes 5 hours and we spend a lot of time just admiring the course or hearing discussions about golf, heck 90% of time golf on TV is just background while doing housework anyway.

Only slow play I ever notice is out on the course.  On TV they're always switching to players ready to hit albeit it is painful watching Brian Harman go through his routine.  I've noticed they don't show him until his shot is over or the end result these days.

I was thinking thinking about this the other day. The Tour used to put players on the clock and warned them. And sometimes they were penalized.  Not anymore. The don’t seem to care now. And it’s true, a lot of pros are superslow and many new recreational golfers take after those endless routines and putting gauging methods.  There seems to be a contradiction between the ruling bodies encouraging a fast pace of play and pro tours.

I'm with you, I multi-task when golf is in the background. If anything, happen they'll show it five more times anyway. Golf is a competition and television reality show anyway.

Looks like it came about in the 60s, so been going on for 60 years now….

“Until the mid-'50s the touring pros averaged well under four hours a round—compared with 4:47 and 4:52 in the 1964 and 1965 U.S. Opens”

“The warning of a threesome that included Jack Nicklaus caused a furor. Nicklaus fumed on the course, then vented his wrath in the press room, saying that nobody could play an Open while being "followed by policemen with stopwatches." And Nicklaus had a point. But so did Arnold Palmer when he hustled around Olympic in 3:27, called it his most pleasurable 18 in years and shot a 66”

https://vault.si.com/vault/1966/07/11/perils-of-paralysis

I recall Jack being quoted, when asked why he’s no playing “ready golf” that he was taught to wait until his partner hit before determining yardage/scoping the shot, selecting club etc.

They still do. The pros are good about getting back on pace to avoid the penalty. Once they do they slow down again, rinse and repeat

As long as the group in front of me allows me to get 18 in under four hours, I am a happy camper.

I dont care that much about on tour but you still won't convince me to cheer for Cantlay

Holy molasses Batman! Wow!

2 thoughts: 1. Trevino was/is a Marine. I'm sure he wished he'd had a gun. 2. How in the heck was Sanders a professional golfer with that swing!? It's an abomination. It's uglier than the swing of the guy I played with last week who is a 20+ hacker and snap-hooks everything. Awful...

I watched Jack and Sanders play 18. Jack was next to the green on his drive.

Sanders looked like he hit driver but was a hundred yards short...don't know exactly how far but he must have had a wedge in his hand and hit a terrible approach. That's what killed him...not leaving either his first or second putt below the hole...
