Felt like I pulled a muscle in back or a sharp twinge warming up before 1st round of tourney and now....

Recommended Posts

I have a bad back but I am at a 8 out of 10 pain wise. I was warming up on the range and hit a driver and felt a twinge in my back. IT was 100 out so I played through it fine. Anyways the last two days my pain level is so high. As I write this I have a lacrosse ball behind my chair and my low left back. The deal is though this pain is different than a tight back. It feels "hot" and sharp. I went and got a massage yesterday and it made it worse. I cannot sleep and barely just stand. I am pretty sure the doctor cannot do anything but I am in need a relief? Any ideas for relief would much appreciated. It feels like I tore something...

Presumably you have been taking anti-inflammatories. You can also take Tylenol at the same time to help with pain only. Alternate hot and cold compresses. You can also get stronger, longer lasting anti-inflammatories by prescription as well as straight up pain meds like Tramadol. Go to a doctor. They have the power of the script.

If it is muscular in nature, rest is the best thing for it, a good chance it will take a week to 10 days and probably be healed.  If it is joint/bone/disc, seeing a doctor is a must, rest might work, or might not.  Either way, go see a doctor.

I have had back issues off and on for 40 years, but mine have always been strained muscles.  It has been from not keeping my core strong and/or letting my hamstrings get tight, both really can stress my lower back.   I have had a few really bad bouts where I couldn't even move for days, and then in about a week I was basically fine.  What has been worse was "minor" pain that was nagging and lasted months.....I missed a summer of golf about 20 years ago when something happened hitting balls at the range in May, didn't seem like much, just enough where hitting a ball was painful, but in my regular day-to-day life, you wouldn't even know I had a bad back.   I didn't play again until late August that year....

We had a guy at our club that was dealing with similar symptoms. He’d lay out for a couple weeks, and come back when he felt better, and it would be ok for a while. After a week, he’d play, and make it to the 12th or 13th, and have to quit. He went to pt, and that made it worse. He eventually went to the doctor, and had back surgery. PTs are not doctors, go to a doc, and get properly checked.

Let me guess; you felt a little zing in your back at the time, it's progressively locked up and spasmed ever since, and now you're walking like a man twice your age. Sounds a lot like a herniated lumbar disc; best go see a Doc and get some phys therapy. When you herniate a disc, the fluid in the spinal column escapes into the surrounding muscle tissue and inflames the snot out of it.

Thank you I hope not though. I had a surgery 30 years ago and do not want another one.

I do not have scaitic issues at all it is all pretty local. It helps when I lay on a lacrosse ball.

As others have said, decent chance it's a herniated disc. Go see a doc so you can get referred for imaging. You and the doc (or PT) probably won't know how to treat it without this.

I’ve been dealing with various back things for many years. The good news for you is that it’s off to the side not in the spine. The bad news is it’s just going to take time and taking it easy. Lower back pulls are horrible and you can’t even blink with using your lower back muscle it seems. Just manage the pain best you can with otc anti inflammatories and pain meds. You could see about getting some muscle relaxers from the doc but they never really helped me. It will take a few days to even notice a difference, several day before it starts easing up much, and at least a couple of weeks before you even get close to normal again.

When it gets to where it’s feeling better try to move around more but don’t push it. Give it a week after your feeling close to normal before you even think about pushing it or swinging a club.

Finally, don’t be surprised if you pull a muscle on the other side while you’re hurt because it’s compensating. Your whole back will be sore before it’s all said and done. I feel for you man, back issues suck.

Check out a book called the back mechanic by Dr. Stuart McGill before you do anything surgical.  It really opened my eyes on how to deal with back issues.

Also, long term things will not change if you don't change your habits.  You really have to make changes to your back strength and fitness to make real change.

That is great to hear.  I know I haven't been as good at staying fit through my golf life as I should have.

Actually you are an even better candidate for the book then.  He really gets into how you have to learn what is wrong and figure out how to stop doing the things that hurt you.  It is really interesting.

Do you use proper form working out? Not being a di&k I see so so many people either lifting to heavy with poor form or doing only lifts for appearance and become of balance body composition wise which also leads to injuries

L4/L5 Micro Discectomy survivor 4 years ago. I herniated the disc in 2 places. Hate to say it but your symptoms sound a lot like what I had, although I did mine at work. Best advice is get to the doc and get an MRI only way they knew what was really going on with me after about 2 months of pain meds and stretching and cortisone shot did nothing but delay the inevitable.

I had the same surgery Willy Z had, about 4 years ago now, and although there are days and times, I still have a stiff back, I am able to get back to work and golf without any affects. Listen to your body however, and do not be a hero. I didn't hit a ball for about a year during all this and although I am sure I could have I did not want to mess with it. Many sleepless nights and never wishing the pain on my worst enemy.

Also, WALK do not stay to stationary after the initial pain wears off. Worst thing you can do is not being active in the sense of just laying or sitting on the couch.

Hope it gets better and isn't as serious as mine was.

Thanks man, I had an L5 back in 92 fixed. Pain is localized and no sciatic at all. It feels like a strain and kinda wraps around my left hip from the base of my rib cage.

If you don't have an addictive personality and live in a state where it is allowed, many people near me get back relief 4-8 hours at a time with the Hippie Lettuce gummies.  It can help you sleep until you can get to the doc.  It is probably better than the synthetic heroin that the doc will prescribe you.

While not impossible, it is hard to pull a muscle in your back with regular activity.  Hope that it ends up as good as it can...

I did a similar thing a few years ago. A twinge when I swung but the pain was manageable so I finished the round. Next day the worst back pain of my life. My wife has had 3 spinal fusion operations and has tried all kinds of things to manage the pain in her back that aren’t painkillers. She sent me to an acupuncturist she uses half the time. I was skeptical. In a week and 3 treatments later I went from not being able to stand up to playing 9. It was pretty incredible.

I can share what I've done for spine pain.  I've dealt with spine issues for over 20 years.  I'd see a  Physaitrist who is a specialist and can help with injections and nerve ablation along with other therapies.  I've been down the road of spine pain enough times that I start with looking the PT exercises up do that on my own before the appointment along with otc anti inflammatory meds .  If they help then I don't need the appointment, and if they don't help much then I just saved myself a few weeks of PT and we can get on to the next step without a follow up to see how PT worked.

Someone mentioned acupuncture, it works.  In my experience I had to have a few appointments a week along with Chinese herbs (not what you think, real Chinese medicine) or it stopped working.  A side note about acupuncture is that once the needles were placed in my neck and the electrical impulses started I'd go to sleep within one minute.  I always woke up in a pile of drool and had a hard time driving home.

IMO acupuncture releases some powerful endorphins that help with pain.

So I am second day on Prednisone (love this stuff wish I could take a bath in it lol). Dr says it is my faucet joint or a pulled muscle as no nerve issues at all. I still cannot sleep on my left side but pain is 50% better and today is day 7. I am using my lacrosse ball theragun, and hanging from my pull up bar. I am just praying everyday it is not disc, my stenosis, arthritis or degen disks. lol...

I did something playing golf back in late February that was causing me a lot of pain in my mid and upper back. I'm 57 and have never had back problems. Felt localized, no pain down legs. Used the lacrosse ball and rested. Would take 7-10 days off, feel better, try to play, and end up right back where I was. Finally went to a spine ortho and was told no nerve issues but most likely a rhomboid and/or thoracic sprain. Was given a steroid pack and referred for PT. Felt better when I went to my first PT appointment. The guy did some mobility and strength tests and then when he was working on my back on the table said "I think you've got a slipped rib." I was stunned and a little alarmed when he said "I think I can get it." He put some serious pressure on the spot and there was a serious pop and he said "almost." He did it again and the pop sounded like a gun shot. It didn't really hurt but was quite startling. Anyway, stood up and felt like myself for the first time in months. Played 18 the next day with no issues and have been completely fine since. Anyway, not suggesting that's your issue but I would go see a PT. They might uncover something that's otherwise being missed.

Had trouble sleeping on that side and would also occasionally get stomach pain, which had me concerned, although I didn't have any other symptoms that would suggest anything serious. But when I got home from the PT appointment and read about slipped ribs, stomach pain was one of the most common symptoms along with pain between the shoulder blades. Crazy, and undetected by x-ray and my PT said they usually aren't seen on an MRI.

I've had mis-aligned or slipped ribs in the past and it's pretty painful.  It's quite the sensation when they pop them back into place.  I've been seeing a massage therapist with a PT background for the past 7-8 years.  I had really bad back spasms back then but have been good for more than 6 years now.  I don't wish that pain on anyone.

Well thank you for sharing. I went back to chiro and told him, I think it might be a rib. SO he pulled on my pelvis and pushed on my ribs as I liad face down. POP it went.... This happened this morning but as of now that dull ache and pain is gone, back still tight but at least the main pain issue is gone. I am hoping that was it and I can move on. I am afraid to go to sleep though as every morning (like 4am), I wake with that sharp aching pain.

Long history of back issues here. Please take this advice:

Do yourself a favor and ask your doctor for some scans to rule out anything really serious and then get a referral to a sports medicine PT.

Do the PT exercises religiously (even when it starts feeling better). It’s the best thing you can ever do for yourself with back pain.

You will probably need to advocate for yourself because most people are unwilling to put in the work required for PT to be successful and are looking for quick fixes like pain meds and surgery. Avoid those at all costs and if your doctor suggests them get a second opinion before doing anything.

If I stay on top of my PT exercises at home (4-5 times per week) then I have minimal discomfort  and am able to do all daily activities and play golf without any issues.

If I get lazy and go a few weeks without doing them it’s only a matter of time before my back twinges, the spasms start and I’m unable to even get out of bed or the chair for up to a week. Unable to walk normally for 1-2 weeks and unable to play golf for 2-3 months. I’ve gone through this cycle 4 times over the last 18 years and at this point I’ve just decided that it’s not worth it and I’m carving out 20mins a day for the exercises no matter what.
