Which Blades Should I Get?

colu41

Recommended Posts

Trying not to make this a "Whats the best blade ever made" post. As I've went through all of them already trying to make a decision.

With that said, I want to pick up a set of older, classic type blades just to play around with.

I believe I've narrowed my sets down to the Mizuno Pro TN-87. Or the MP33s. Which one, between the two, would you choose?

I know there are A LOT more great irons out there, but out of dozen or so posts, articles, etc I've read, these are hands down the most talked about.

For any reason you think neither of them are a good choice, name your set, and WHY.

I'm trying to keep these cheap also so, saying to get Miuras isn't happening. 😆

MP-33 are butter when you flush them!!

And see, that's where it gets confusing. As I've seen dozens of people say that there's no iron out there that feels better than a flush hit TN87. Because apparently it had and underlayment of copper also in the plating? I don't really know.

May be right, I have never hit the TN87's. I believe the MP33 also has the copper underlay. Maybe someone can verify, as it's been decades.

No flame please...I owned a set of 33's for a while but visually I never adjusted to the size of the head.  To my eye it always fell on the larger size.  It's all relative I suppose but if you're fussy about the visual affect at address maybe give them both a good look.  I also prefer the shape of the muscle pad on the 87.  Of course that's over twenty years ago.

I was leaning more towards the TNs honestly. But I do want a nice small profile classic blade. I guess I would need to see a side by side comparison. I owned a set of MP33s awhile back but bought them solely for refinishing. Got the Refinished and sold them. Should have just kept them.

The MP33's are quite large comparitively. Had Wilson Staff FG17 prior to the MP33's and they're night and day on size. Definitely took some adjusting to the size at the time, but today the Wilson's look nearly impossible to play. Tiny sweet spot on those.

On a side note, if you want to improve your ball striking this is a great idea. I was way more in tune with my swing when I had such a small margin for error.

MP-33 are very nice. They are a little bit higher launching than most blades which made the longer irons more playable than most. I played a set from 2003 until 2010 and can attest that they are fantastic blades.

Currently I play MP-18s which I perfer becuase they are smaller heel to toe but I'd play the 33s all day long.

One of the best feeling shots I've ever hit was the TN87. It was a 7 iron sitting down in the rough and I flew it over a bunker and it held on the green from 165-170. There are a few that are comparable though, among them Maruman Conductors (I can hook you up). Tourstage MR-23 (I may also have a set) Founders Club 200 series (Miura forged) and Hogan Bounce Sole +1 - but, most people would consider that an inferior iron to the aforementioned.

I've had a few sets of TNs. They are beautiful. The have reverse offset (so, more offset in the short irons than the long irons). It does take a while to get used to that

How or those TourStages? I'm a huge Bridgestone fan. Only ball I use. I've seen the J33B sets on a few lists also but. Not a super common club for sale. And was hoping to find a set for sub $300. Preferably in the $250 as I have my eye on some TNs & MP33s for that.

If you're gonna look at Tourstage, the 909s are a pure as the driven snow.

Can't suggest a brand (well, I probably could, but I won't). But I will suggest - Japan. These people were forging metal literally centuries before the US even existed. My irons and wedges are from Japan. My kitchen knives are from Japan (seriously 🤣).

No one else in the world comes close to understanding how to work with metal (maybe the Germans, but it isn't that close).

WRX makes me say the weirdest things.

Might I suggest you take a look at a (slightly) used set of Takomo 301s? Modestly priced, but forged in Japan. These are player's clubs. They do not even pretend to be forgiving. But are incredibly workable. And you didn't ask about SGI clubs. 🤣

Nothing against Takomo, as I actually contemplated a set from. May still in the future. But not looking to spend $650 on a set right now. I just ordered a custom combo set of Maltbys last week. Lol

Missed part about being slightly used. But still most people I see selling used Takomos are asking like 95% of retail

Oh man there's a 3-Pw set of those Tour Stage Mr23s on ebay right now in amazing condition for $196 shipped....😬 Those things are gorgeous but, am i going to regret not getting Mizunos? I'm looking for a nice, classic, soft feeling blade. I know Mizunos will give me that. These Bridgestones I have zero knowledge on.

I still use MP-32's.  I would add them to your list of blades to try.  I never played the 33's, but did play the 59/69 and the MP4's.  I would highly recommend giving the 32's a chance.

I second the 32’s, best feeling, easiest to hit irons I have ever played. My current MP 20’s are also fantastic and on their way to that status as well.

🤣 I spent some time in Japan for business. Several of us on WRX have. Weird place, takes a bit of adjusting to (though Kanji is slightly easier than Mandarin to learn for the most part).

Still, I gotta say, I've been playing golf for over 50 years, have played about every club out there. But (if you are a golfer), there might be no better feeling on earth better than flushing a 7i center club with an iron that emerges from a Japanese forge.

This is truth.

Best iron shot feeling ever was a mizuno mmc. 4 iron of the tee. The feel that came from the shot was like nothing i ever felt before and ive flushed alot of other irons before. I couldnt believe it and havent felt it since which leads me to believe shaft can also make a difference in iron strike feeling. The staft was kbs tour 90 stiff and i have noticed since then kbs shafts feel better in any iron head ive hit versus other brand shafts in different heads. That shot made me buy my first set of mizunos because those were my brothers irons. I used his 4 iron to hit the shot off the tee. Fully flushed and the sensation up from ball to hands was i believe the best feeling from a shot one could ever have in golf.
