Genesis Scottish Open 2024

Recommended Posts

Ewen Fergusson and Bob McIntyre both obviously in good form, if no central Scandinavian in contention I'll root for a scotsman. Would be nice to see play from some other course than Renaissance, its not all that exciting as Scottish courses go. But they do not rotate Scottish too much, Loch Lomond did run it for more than a decade.

Nice summary, Matty.

Big names.  Should be a good one.

It appears as if Scheffler hopes sitting out the week prior to a major is a good strategy.

According to Ron Jenkins (TV personality / CEO of Magnum Force):

"Hope is not a strategy anyone can live with."

Definitely agree that it would be good if they could go back to the rotation that they had in the years prior to them settling in at Renaissance however, the word seemed to be that the courses they were going to either had memberships that were not too happy and missing out due to the upheaval involved in getting the course ready or they lost out on so much money by not being able to get visitors out there. Castle Stuart for example is a club without members (save corporations) the entire operation depends on visitor income and they were losing out on weeks of it.

I would like the Scottish Open to be played on a historic Scottish course, and I would nominate North Berwick (wouldn't that be fun!) or Gullane right off.  There are a few others that are not on the Open rota that would be lovely.

One of my favorite non majors. Love to watch golf on links. The next weeks are my favorite two back to back tournaments.

Agree with a few comments above. I know it's all about money but I wish they would tour this event around - go back to Castle Stuart (or whatever it's called now), Royal Aberdeen, Gleneagles, Loch Lomond, Dundonald - or even look into Glasgow Gailes or Western Gailes, both fantastic Open qual courses. The purse and status are now big enough that not many players would skip it because they want to play links the week before the Open as was the case in the old days. I don't like Renaissance at all - it looks quite linksy but doesn't play like a proper links and it's really dull to have the SO there every year.

Will be cheering on Bob Mac (AKA Robert MacIntyre - just never, ever "Bobby Mac").

If you hear Doak tell it, it is not presented in the manner he had intended it to be.  They do not let it get dry and firm and instead it takes on a more "americanized" links feel.

"The Renaissance has a reputation as a tough driving course – and that has been exacerbated by some set-up decisions made by the club. ‘The course is now about half as wide as when I built it. They stopped mowing large portions of fairway a few years ago to prove that the course was a tough test, though I thought the length and difficulties around the greens would take care of most of that.’

Doak is phlegmatic about what happens when a course is picked to host a top event like the Scottish Open. ‘Mr. Sarvadi still asks my opinion of things, but for example it was not my idea to renumber the holes and put the most compelling part of the golf course right at the start (and likely not on TV).  Once the Tour takes over, even the owner doesn't get a say, and the architect surely doesn't.’"

I don't know that it matters if he plays the week before, as long as he is over there getting adjusted to the time change and practicing.

It seems to me that he could better prepare by hitting 500 chips a day and practicing hitting out of pot bunkers, etc.

Working on the shots you always get on a links course for a week would be better than playing 4 competitive rounds imho.

Plus, he's so damn rich already he doesn't need the money : )

Nobody can account for wind or weather but he can practice when it's windy, etc.

The point is, 4 rounds playing for money won't help him.

40 hours of practicing putting from 30 yards off the green and chipping and running the ball over all sorts of terrain will...

Ahhhh after last year I can’t wait. Was supposed to be going but now not. Oh well I will watch a lot of TV.

St Andrews was buzzing yesterday and it put me in the mood for the best 2 weeks of golf in a row all year!

If he gets the Tiger treatment he will always get a good draw.

Funny how that happens...

Funny how people like to use conspiracy theories to explain things - it makes life easier to understand.

Are they going to be mispronouncing the name of the course all week again?

Genuinely not sure if you mean the US or UK pronunciation.  If they say "re-nay-sonce" rather than "renny-sonce" then they're correct given where it is.

It's a stupid name for a course anyway.
