Agree with papichulo. I've tried both extensively & they are both excellent. Although there's a premium placed on forged clubs, I actually prefer the i5. I don't think one can be said to be "much" better than the other. Also, I've found that most pros don't really comment too much on equipment unless there's a big mismatch & is getting in the way of your game.

I agree with the previous threads. I have heard nothing but good things about the MX 23's, however I play i5's and think they are awesome. You can't go wrong with either club and its simply a matter of eye appeal.

TaylorMade M2 (9.5*)
Exotics CB5 (15*)
TM Rescue TP (19*)
Mizuno JPX 850 Forged (4-GW)
PING Anser Forged (54*,58*)
PING Vintage Pal 2 (35")

Your pro is off base here and a bit of a jerk for saying that after you've purchased the i5s.

I've owned both sets and actually find the i5s a bit more forgiving with a better look. The i5 short irons are also better looking and easier in the short game.

So don't worry. Enjoy the i5s.

I agree, first step is dump your pro. He's suppose to be helping you, building your confidence!

Like was said above, both are great sticks. I play the 23's but have hit the I5's. Both are great clubs from 2 quality companies.

To choose between I5's and MX-23's would be purely personal preference and not based upon quality at all. I think both sets are equal in forgiveness and performance capability.

Before you go and dump your pro, can I ask if you were hitting an MX23 while he watched? Where you talking about your irons at the time (likes or dislikes)?

Just wondering if he had some sort of basis for making the comment.

Both companies produce good irons, and I agree with others that it's personal preference for the user.

I just went through the iron buying process myself, and selected the MX23's. For me, they preformed great. Might not be the case for others though. While at a store that will remain nameless, I encountered another person going through the iron search process. One of the store employees was helping this guy go through just about every iron they had "in stock". The employee had this person hit about 12 different sets of irons, and you could tell the employee was pushing him towards Callaway. Not saying that Callaway is a bad choice, but the guy was still trying to find what fit him best. Turns out, the employee mentioned that he had X18's in his bag, and was very happy with them. Problem was, the guy just got through hitting them and you could tell he wasn't sold on them. I mentioned to this other person he might want to take a look at the MX23's. Not surprisingly, the employee was quick to point out they didn't have them in stock, and would have to be ordered. I can't blame the employee for "going with what you know" while helping a customer, but it was to the point where the employee just wanted to make the sale and was pressing for the Callaways. Best thing for the customer would be to walk away at that point, and try to narrow down his choice.

Point being we all have to find what works for us, and a lot of us don't even find it on the first attempt.

If your Pings work well for you, I would say stay with them.

I recently bought a set of i5 irons and I really like them. My pro tells me I would have been better served buying the Mizuno MX 23's. Says they are a much better club. I find that hard to believe. Any thoughts on the subject would be welcome.

I would guess you didn't buy the I5's from the Pro. As others have said, personal preference, both are good sets. The MX 23's are a little bulky in my opinion. Enjoy!

This term pro has to be changed..as we associate that title as being a golf guru with great game. Truth is, they passed an apprenticeship that is not very difficult and at first is low in pay. Some sales people get extra commission or perks from reps if they sell a certain amount of there clubs...in NY without mentioning where the sales people work they are offered baeball tickets to a game of there choice if they sell a certain oems clubs....

Both are great irons. I went with the Ping I5/G5 combo because I seem to get the buttery feeling and the level of forgiveness from most Ping irons, I can't get from others. I can't see how you'd go wrong with either set.

Pros are just like everyone else. Once they allign themselves with a brand, it almost takes the next coming of clubs to recommend anything but that brand.

I own both sets.

Use the I5's for my winter bag - because it's almost impossible to tear or wear a set of Ping irons.

On top of that I really like the forgiveness and cast feel of the Ping I5's. The short irons of the I5 look less bulky then short irons of the Mx-23.

The Mx-23 is also a great forgiving set of forged irons. Forged form 1035 carbon steel makes them a bit less soft than the butter soft irons carbon forged from 1025 and 1020 carbon steel (Mp-60, Mp-32, Mp-33, Hogan Apex 50 etc.)

But still the Mx-23 is probably the best forgiving & forged cavity back irons ever made.

The Ping I5 is cast, but still soft feeling and much more durable than the Mx-23 and as I said the short irons of the I5 looks better than the Mx-23 short irons.

Both iron set are among the best irons and can be played by the mid handicapper and all the way down to the scratch player.
