Ping G5

Recommended Posts

The first-ever wood-like hybrid

from PING is distinguished by a sloped crown which positions the center of gravity low and back to promote a higher launch and greater control.

Similar variable-thickness face geometry

used in PING drivers and fairway woods is applied to the G5 Hybrid. The 455 steel face is machined and robotically plasma welded to provide distance and consistency. The precision of the welding process allowed our engineers to reposition saved weight on the sole to optimize spin for maximum distance and control.

The compact head design

ensures playability from all conditions, allowing golfers to use the G5 Hybrid from anywhere on the course they need to hit a long, high, soft-landing approach shot.

I have had a G5 hybrid 19 degree for 2 months. It has been terrific. Distance is great 200-225 yds and really bores through the wind. I have an Aldila NV 85S. I love this club and like it much better than my TM rescue with Fuji banzai. I would highly recommend. I have about a 100mph swing with a driver.

I purchased a G5 16 degree with the grafalloy shaft. The club is somewhat difficult to get up in the air from off of the turf. I asked the club pro as well as another single digit handicapper try it out, and they said the same thing. This club seems to go about the same distance as my 3 wood, and twice as hard to hit, so I have to say pass on this club, there are better hybrids out there.

Interesting feedback. I have a 16 and a 19 in Grafalloy shafts and in TFC 100 shafts. Both clubs sweep nicely off most lies in the blue Grafalloy, and carry high, with little roll. The same clubhead in the TFC shaft carries lower, longer, and rolls further as well.

Those with distance problems [either way] should experiment with shafts as they seem to make a big difference with these clubs.

I have found them useful if I keep these differences in mind--

The only problem I have had with them is their headweighting makes it easy for me to close the clubface through impact and hit big sweeping hooks.

I bought a G5 19deg. Hybrid in June fitted with a Grafflaloy ProLaunch 85R shaft but found out earlier last month that this was too much club for my swing speed. I registered for a professional launch monitor session which I would recommend to anyone starting to have problems with their game. I really benefitted from this session and changed my driver and fairway woods for the recommended combination. I have now bought the new PING Rapture Driver, 5-wood and 21deg. Hybrid all fitted with Aldila NVS shafts which provide me with the desired flight pattern for my new swing speed and smooth tempo.

I therefore have a G5 19deg. Hybrid for sale which would fit very well for someone with a 90+ mph swing speed. I very much like this club and if I am unable to sell at my asking price of $175 Cdn I am considering reshafting with an Aldila NVS Hybrid 85R to match my other clubs and add one more deadly weapon to my arsenal to help me get back my very reasonable 8 handicap.

One other consideration would be to make a swap with anyone who has recently acquired a new Rapture Hybrid 24deg. loft and did not like the experience.

The Accuflex Icon HL shaft works really well in the G5 Hybrid, it seems more solid/stable than the NV85. I'm using the reg flex and it plays a bit firmer than the NV85R. I wanted a higher ball flight from the fairway. (note: you might need to put a thinner grip on due to the butt diameter being wider - in my case putting an aqua Ping grip on solved this).

These are great. Nice trajectory. I yanked my 4 iron out for the 22 degree. Goes 198-202 every single time. Already had the 19 degree for the 212-220 yard shots.

A side note for those above that say it doesn't go far enough...why would you want every club to just go far? Other than the driver, distance is fairly meaningless. Maybe a 3-wood needs some extra punch if you are borderline reaching par 5s on your home course. You can always tune your other clubs to match your swing and the ball will go exactly as far as you want it to. Who cares what the club says on the bottom, as long as it goes close to the hole. Do you really thing Vijay hits a normal spec 3-iron 245 yards like he did at East Lake. That 3-iron might as well be a 1-iron.

Well said duckhook

I tried one of these at a demo day and loved them. They go dead straight for me. Last week I bought a 22* with a Prolaunch shaft to replace my 3 and 4 iron. I've been doing some late season ho'ing, but I think this will definitely be a keeper.

The distance doesn't matter that much as long as the distance is consistent and it fits with your other distance gaps. All I need this club to do is go 190-200 with a draw and 180-190 with a fade with a high trajectory and I'll be happy with it.

;) I got one a while back and love it. I have a 19* that replaced my 3 iron. Although they are "easier" to hit they are a bit quirky becuase they seem awfull short for thier wieght, but when you hit it good... JEEZ the ball screams. I have a graf* blue reg. I had the same shaft in a driver but the driver balooned like crazy, but that is not the case with this hybrid. Great all around Club!!!!

I have 3 G5 hybrids and love them(16*,19*, and 22*). All 3 have the Ping TFC100 shaft in them. I demoed the G5 with Prolaunch and the Aldila but hated both. The TFC100 was designed for this club and hits a nice mid trajectory that goes straight. Try it out!

Absolutely the best hybrid I hit. I tried Bafflers, Halos, Nickents, Heavenwoods, etc with some success - but the G5 was the first hybird I had the same confidence as an 8 iron. I bought the 22* with the ProLaunch shaft and it's absolute money for a 195-205 yard shot.
