Hips sore after lots of golf

TML

Recommended Posts

Anyone else experience this as well? Anyone have any advice?.....thanks

Whenever I play a lot of golf in a row, let's say on a golf trip, my left hip socket (I'm a RH golfer) gets sore. Sore enough that I can feel it just standing around. Eventually within a few days it'll go away. It never shows up unless I golf a lot.

I can play a lot of other sports, I jog about 15-20 miles a week, walk the dogs every day, and watch too much sports on tv :birthday: ....but never have hip soreness during or after these other activities.

A few things I have started to do.

- I'll start taking glucosimine condrotin daily

- I picked up the book "The Egoscue Method of Health thru motion" for more understanding and stretching keys.

- I did some research and noticed that many pro grolfers get MRIs on their hips and get cartilage cleared out.

Since it's only sore after a lot of golf, I really can't see having arthroscopic on my hip, as I tend to believe that there is something wrong with my swing or my lack of stretching has more to do with it.

Sounds to me if you are having problems with your left hip socket that you are pulling out of the shot pretty hard on your left side. Without seeing your swing I cannot make a Professional analisis of this but this is what it sounds like, or maybe even spinning out of the shot.

Once again though just speculation without seeing your swing. Have someone take a look at you preferably a Professional and ask them the same question.

Good luck!

Easy......its the left hip labrum.......More than likely its sore because its being stressed when you attempt to clear your left side WITHOUT having the left toe flared out towards the target.......your left side can't clear properly unless the left toe is flared out towards the target a bit.......as much as 50 degrees in Trevino's case......20deg. or so is about average.......the toes are the "governors" of the golf swing and you need to flare out the left one to allow the left side to clear properly........

Do this as a test.......narrow your stance a bit.......flare out the left toe at least 20 degrees to the target line.......then hit some balls and see if these set up changes don't reduce the stress on your left hip socket.........you can also open up your stance slightly.......Bet these changes make your hip feel a LOT better......

Get some ankle weights....7.5 lb. to 10 lb. range:

Perform Better

Put one weight on your left ankle and lay on your right side with your body/legs straight up & down just like your were standing at attention. Raise your left leg straight up about 12"-18" and return it for 1 rep. Do 10-25 reps. Now very slightly bend both legs moving your knee forward only a few inches and do 10-25 leg raises again. Be sure to keep your upper leg aligned with lower leg and your knee higher than foot when you lift. Finally, bend your knees further until your thigh is now perpendicular to your spine and 90 degrees from it's straight starting position. Do a final 10-25 leg raises using same good form. Switch weight to right leg, get on right side and repeat there.

First position looks like this:

MOST amateur golfers finish with their left toe (right toe if your left handed) turned out more than where it started.......go get some video of amateurs (some professionals too) and you'll notice that the left foot on just about all of them "turns" out during the downswing/throughswing to accomodate the clearing of the left side.......I'm just glad that steel spikes are "out" now.......hehehe

I'll virtually guarantee you that IS your problem with your left hip.......IF your not already suffering from a slight Labrum tear.....which I sincerely hope your not as I hear its very painful.......

Slicefixer,

I just went outside and flared my left foot out like you said, and it's amazing how much easier it is to clear the left side and finish the swing. It feels a lot better on the clear, as if it's a very gradual motion. I've always closed my foot, to keep from swaying in my early days, but now it seems ingrained into my setup. Maybe this will even improve my ball striking. :birthday:

I'm fairly certain it's not a tear, otherwise I'd feel it more often in my everyday life. I have no pain at all, until I do one of those 3 days of golf in a row. Then it turns into a slight soreness, and goes away after a day or 2.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Sounds like your young and in good shape so I think slicefixer is on the right track. After reading most of slicefixers posts I think he has the most knowledge on the teaching side on this web site. He's got you on the right track with flaring out your left foot. Good luck.

After instilling your input into my routine (left foot position and leg exercise), along with stretching, I have noticed a difference already. I'm feeling better after a few days this week. Thanks for your help. The real test will be during my San Juan trip comng up shortly, where golf will be on the menu every day.
