any suggestions?

My buddy is planning on getting a new set of clubs for the upcoming year. Does anyone have any tips?

My opinion:
Driver:Ping G5, TM R7 425, Titleist 905R
Irons:Titleist 735.CM, 690 or 695 combo set, Ping I5
Wedges:Vokey Spin Milled, Cleveland CG10
3 Wood/Hybrid:I dont have much of an idea

I agree with Bryan, but if you don't want to bother with all that, the list that you have put together of club choices should have something he will like, everything you listed is as good as anyone could ever want.

Well neither of us have handicaps yet, but he normally shoots between par to 5 or 6 over.

He hits his 7 iron about 165, both of us play about every day to every other day at the least. I think he is good enough to play blades since he has been playing the Nike Pro Combo tours for about 2 years, but he is kind of leaning towards a cavity back. He is not much of an equipment/techy guy so he is not going to put in any special shafts that dont come with the club.

 

Current clubs:

driver: Cleveland Launcher 460

3 wood Cleveland launcher steel

irons: Nike Pro Combo tour(the older version, not the newer)

wedges:cleveland 588 56* and 60*

Here are my thoughts...............

 

Driver: Bridgestone J33R 460cc or 420cc. This club feels more muted than his cleveland, and is a true ROCKET. Be careful - it wants to slice, as it has very minimal offset - if he's a slicer, watch out! Option: Re-shaft the L460 with a higher quality shaft. There's nothing wrong with the L460 - I just don't like the clankier/tinnie sound/feel of that clubhead. A different shaft might help the feel of the club. Option #2: TaylorMade R5 - this is my gamer, and it's a cannon. Great stick.

 

3W: Tour Edge Exotics - these are coming down in price on eBay and other sources. Great 3W. Option: Titleist 904F - again, I love the muted sound/feel of this club, and it's VERY long. Option2: a 4Wood rather than a 3W.

 

Utility Club/Driving Iron: Get a 19* or 21* Bridgestone J33 Airmuscle with the Aldila NV85 Hybrid shaft. I think he needs this club in the bag to fill a gap there.

 

Irons: Bridgestone J33 Combo irons. I have a set of these - they're GREAT, and the price is dropping rapidly! Option: the newer J33 cavity backs, or pickup a used set of Tourstage Z101 irons. these are beautiful forged clubs that are plenty forgiving for someone at his level.

 

Wedges: Stay with what you got if you like 'em. Nothing wrong with Cleveland Wedges. Option: If he wants to switch anyway - Ping TOUR.

 

Putter: I'll always recommend a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Studio Stainless anytime. Option: YES!, your model of choice.

Nothing wrong with any of the clubs on your list, but I would add Bridgestone and Tour Edge to the driver list to try and the must try in the irons are the J33 combos and :D MP 32's and MP60's. 3 Woods :birthday: :birthday: :cheesy: and Tour Edge :)

I personally am I titleist guy. If he is a good player, I would recommend the following: Driver=Titleist 905S, 3 Wood=Titleist 904F, Hybrid=New Titleist Hybrid comin out in the spring-585H(AKA 503U), Irons=690mb or 695mb (new 695mb comin out in spring), Wedges=something vokey-vokey's have great feel, and Putter=something scotty cameron. Driver: 905T/S/R pick one and the shaft you like best

Fw: 904f 15* w/shaft of choice

hybrid: wait and get the new Titleist 585H(503U)

Irons: If hes on the edge of blades and cavities go with a combo. Nuthing wrong with 690.MB/CB or 735.CM, unless he want the new 695.MB/CB's

Wedges: Vokey's of choice... i like 54* 60*

putter: Scotty Cameron of choice.

Bag: PING Hoofer extreme

Balls: ProV1/ProV1X

 

 

you get the drift...Titleist ...... you can get em all at good prices and come with plenty of stock shaft choices!
