I think the saddest thing of all is that all the other pros couldn't beat a guy with basically one leg. Is Tiger really that much better, or have all the otehr players become soft because of the enormous amounts of money?

It seems like Tiger is the only one with the single minded goal of winning.

Hmmm, you MAY be on to something here :clapping:

I do not see another player on the PGA or European Tour with the ferocity and desire to win that Tiger has.

And I would not want to be a PGA pro in 2009: by then Tiger will have recovered, be really well rested, and will be singlemindly focused in doing anything in order to win the 4 remaining majors to tie Jack. If the knee heals well and with all this rest, a Grand Slam may not be completely out of the question.

Think about it: with a Grand Slam in 2009, Tiger could tie Jack, and then break his record in 2010!

Tiger plays to win, and for the history books - heck, he already has more money than he would ever needs.

Knee detective

Does Tiger Woods have a career-ending injury? Not according to an orthopedic surgeon known to his colleagues as "the knee detective."

I've been wearing out my cell phone batteries the past week talking with Dr. Ronald Grelsamer, a knee surgeon at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

"His recovery could take a long time," Dr. Grelsamer told me a while ago, as the news came out that Woods needs reconstructive surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament and rehabilitation time for a previously undisclosed double stress fracture of his left tibia. He will miss the rest of the season.

"But this should not be career threatening," Dr. Grelsamer said. "He would still be able to play golf."

But the doc isn't sure that the Woods camp has been completely forthcoming about the famous patient's condition. "There's a couple of things that still don't make perfect sense," he said. "There's no such thing as a double stress fracture in a young, healthy person. I've been a knee surgeon for 25 years, and I've never heard of that, although it happens in old people.

"Furthermore, it's extremely hard to tear an ACL just running. It happens mostly in women — say, from running up and down a basketball floor. And a non-contact ACL, that's not likely to cause bone or cartilage damage."

And Dr. Grelsamer didn't believe for a minute that Tiger winced on his tee shots last week because of a torn ACL. "An ACL tear doesn't hurt," he said. "It hurts the day you tear it, but not days later. John Elway is rumored to have played his whole career with a torn ACL.

"I respect Tiger's right to privacy, and I'm not criticizing him, but I have a sneaking suspicion we're not being told the whole story."

So what is going on? Dr. Grelsamer, while making it clear that he has not seen Tiger's medical file, said that the pain he endured through four rounds and a playoff at the U.S. Open suggests that the problem lies in the golfer's articular cartilage and the underlying bone.

"If you look at the end of a chicken bone, you see that white, shiny stuff? That's articular cartilage. It covers the end of the bone, and it's eight times smoother than ice. It's what allows the joint to move without making popping and scraping noises. Under that cartilage is bone that's hard, like oak, and under that is spongy bone, which is like balsa wood. When they say he has a stress fracture, they're probably trying to make it understandable for people. It's probably a problem with the articular cartilage and the sub-condral bone that lies beneath it."

Dr. Grelsamer, while again making the disclaimer that he hasn't gazed into Tiger's knee, repeats that this probably isn't a stress fracture in the traditional sense. "It's practically impossible that he has a stress fracture from overuse." That kind of break, caused by repetitive pounding, is often found in the feet and shins of runners and basketball players.

"There may be a problem with his circulation. Bone is a living tissue, full of blood, and if the flow is cut off, it's like a stroke. The bone can become soft and crunch down a little. It's very painful, but it isn't due to trauma.

"He could also have OCD, or osteo chondritis dissecans. That's where a piece of cartilage and bone want to separate themselves and break off. That occurs in teenagers and young adults, which means he could have had it for a long time."

Tiger's prognosis? "Hard to tell," says the doc. "These things can be tricky, and I'm handicapped not knowing what it is and where it is. You'll see some basketball players have surgery and come back good as new, like Jason Kidd. Other players are never the same. I'd have to say the outcome is unpredictable."

But Dr. Grelsamer quickly adds, "It still shouldn't end Tiger's career. If worst comes to worst, he has a knee replacement, and that's not the end of the world. Knee replacement is really a misnomer because you don't lop off the knee and put in another. It's more like capping a tooth."

The doctor's final word: "A motivated guy like Tiger is not going to let a little knee replacement get him down."

Judging from what Woods did last week in San Diego, the doc is not going out on a limb.

2009 Majors

Augusta

Bethpage

Turnberry

Hazeltine

.......I'd buy it. I think he can certainly win the first two legs, we all know that. It's just going to be a matter of being healthy for the Masters.

-mini

Agree with you that it looks good for Tiger to win the 2009 Masters & US Open.

More food for thoughts:

1. Augusta will be his welcome back party, and Tiger is very fond of the Masters.

2. Tiger won the US Open at Bethpage Black before so he has that psychological advantage.

3. He will be even more motivated to win the British Open at Turnberry if he wins the first 2.

4. The PGA at Hazeltine may be less certain, although after what transpired at Torrey Pines, anything is possible.

Ok guys I have read a lot of great posts and I will give a few of my thoughts. I respect Tiger Woods as the greatest player that ever lived. I will also miss him in the field even if I dont always want him to win. I have had an on going conversation with my father for years that the only thing that would hold Tiger back is Tiger. This is exactly in my mind what has happened. This is not a fluke thing that happened over night. This to me has been something that has happened during a long stretch in time. I first want to put in a quote from Tigers book How I play Golf,

Tiger states in his book, "When I need an extra 20 yards, I incorporate a special move in my lower body just before impact. I've found that by snapping my left leg straight, my hips clear faster and speed up the movement of my shoulders, arms , and legs. This is an unorthodox move meant solely for power." There was a little more to the quote but this was the main point that I wanted to bring up.

Tiger has dominated golf since he has entered the tour but has also been a victim of what golf has become. The power game of golf has taken a toll on the best player to have ever played. The amount of stress that the left knee has taken over the years has finally caught up to him. At times we all look at Tiger and are amazed at his 325+ yard drives, the way he attacks shots out of lies that no other can, at times even attempting shots that I am sure Tiger might have even thought twice about.

I have been a golf coach and a student of the game for over 30 years. The once in a life time shot that we all crave is something that Tiger gives us every weekend. I just hope that his recovery goes well and that we can see him play again. Golf course management will keep him playing for many years. Hopefully he will look back at his career and see that he can win most tournaments hitting his driver 4 or less times a round and that 120% swings are not needed.

Just my 2 cents.

I know it's a tired phrase "3 wood off the tee", and the risk/reward calculation each Pro makes on every shot, but does anyone think his driving is the best part of his game?

He was, in my mind, clearly much smoother and more accurate with the 3 wood.

How often does his drive cost him a stroke, to how often it saves him one?

Either way, he know best I'm sure, but if he wound back a bit with the driver I don't think he'd be less likely to win.

Get the story straight. Injured the ACL while running during the British Open last year. Had the resulting mess in his knee cleaned up April 15 due in part to compensating for the ACL injury. Was told three weeks on crutches and three weeks off crutches before any rehab. Didn't listen to his doctors and started rehab and suffered stress fracture(s) of shin during rehab. before the Memorial.

For all of those that think he will come back as good as before keep in mind the man will have had 4 operations (2 major, 1 reconstructive, 1 benign tumor removal) on the same knee by age 32. Everybody that is relating their experiences how well they came back from knee surgery probably has had 1 surgery and doesn't put the stress on his knee that Tiger does---so the comparison is immensely flawed. Also if the whispers about micro fractures in the knee joint have any credence he isn't looking at another reconstructive surgery in the future he is looking at knee replacement.

It will be a minor miracle if he comes back to his standards after his rehab (if anyone can it will be Tiger)...Earl Woods did say that Tiger would do other important things with his life other than golf---looks like Earl may have been right only sooner than even he expected.

Sandy, the way I read it was that when they discovered the stress fractures they told him three weeks on crutches and then three weeks off, and that was as he was doing the prescribed rehab of his knee. I'd go find the article, but I'm ashamed to admit I read it on the Wii news channel (oh how low I've sunk). It may have just been poorly written though I suppose, just wondering if there's been a clear timeline established.

I haven't had a joint surgery thankfully, so I may be talking out of my rear, but his performance and pain this weekend seem to stem from the fractures, since we saw no wincing Tiger the prior 10 months when he was on one of his most dominant stretches of his career (with the ACL partially torn). So if its just fixing the ACL and letting time heal the fractures, I wouldn't expect to see a Tiger that was much different than the last 10 months. Now, if its microfractures around the knee like is being speculated and a replacement or more severe reconstruction is necessary then I'd imagine it would take a lot of work to find a swing that agreed with the "new" knee. But if anybody could do it I'd put my money on Tiger.

What it says to me more than anything, is how special a place Torrey Pines holds in his heart. He's going to miss at least two majors anyways, but he refused to miss TP's first Open. We all become accustomed to robot Tiger staring down the fairways and stalking the greens, but we know there's an emotional part of him that we saw when his father passed. I think part of this weekend was him reconnecting with his childhood and the memories he has of him and his father at the South Course.

Or I could be completely over-romantisizing the weekend. :clapping:

Everyone that is worried Tiger will lose his ability to drive the ball well, fear not.

Check out these stats. http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/players/profile?playerId=462

Driving Accuracy 57.9% 154th Total Driving 183 79th Greens Hit in Regulation 71.4% 1st Putting (Per Hole) 1.735 4th

79th in Driving, 1st in GHR. He will still get it done after he has recovered from injury, its obviously not his driving that matters.

Nice stat check. But better to add to any of the full "tiger's out for a bit" threads already in progress than start another one. :clapping:

This very well proves, that Woods is incapable of making rational, sensible decisions. I wonder how he is able to play stratetig golf, if he cannot even be smart with what really matters.

I just had to reply to this as well. "What really matters"?? and may I assume that you would be the best beacon for determining what this might be for Tiger?? Incapable of making sensible decisions?? Maybe if you make close to a billion dollars by the time you're 32, you might deserve the right to make such flippant comments. In the meantime, a little humility and compassion may do your soul some good. Peace! You need it.

Um, I take it you didn't pick up on the sarcasm the poster was trying to convey. I think he's thinking along the same lines as you, just using sarcasm as hit tool of conveyance.

I could be wrong, but that's the way I interpreted it.... :clapping:

so what is it that really matters? i'd chose health over a billion dollars every day. i'd chose health over a us open title every day. someone has to protect woods from being himself. his incredible drive is going to drive him against a wall, if he continues like this.

You said it yourself. You'd choose health over a billion dollars or a major title. He's not you and maybe he also has his reasons for doing what he does. Maybe someone should have told Evel Kneivel the same thing and advised him against jumping buses or Ayrton Senna about the hazards of Formula 1. Different things motivate different people. It does no good to force your logic on them nor my logic on you so i'll end it here. Peace.

I think Tiger is phenomenal. The doc tells Tiger not to play because of the bad knee and I'm sure the doc also mentioned that he needed another surgery. Tiger said.....the hell with surgery, I want to win the US Open, then we can operate. Tiger reminds me of those wounded soldiers in the battle field who don't give up and keep fighting their heart out. Frankly, there is no other golfer tougher than Tiger Woods who can pull off a win with a wounded knee and walking 91 holes!!!

This victory just solidifies Tiger as the best that will ever be....... :clapping:

I would have done the same thing but with a heavy doze of meds. :)

Well put, rge.

Remembering famous people... let's see, there's Ayrton Senna, Kirk Gibson, Willis Reed, Tiger Woods, Evel Knievel, Gale Sayers (for both comebacks), Ben Hogan, and... and...

I'm sorry, sebastian. Your name IRL is...? I'm sure I would know it if I heard it.

He's the best. Just like a soldier in battle! Golf..........what a game!!!!!!!

I'm not trying be an a** here but there is no comparison to soldiers (or Marines, Sailors, or Airmen) in battle. I highly doubt Tiger risked death while walking through Torrey Pines.

I'm Tiger fan too, but lets reserve hero status for people who actually risk their lives for the sake of others.

Jack's Take on Tiger....

--------------

Nicklaus even more amazed at Tiger’s victory

By DOUG FERGUSON, AP Golf Writer

Jack Nicklaus always thought the U.S. Open was the hardest and most complete test in golf. That’s what made Tiger Woods’ victory even more impressive to the man whose major record Woods is trying to beat.

“To have a will as strong as that, I take my hat off to him,” Nicklaus said Thursday.

Nicklaus was in Utah on Monday while Woods was going 19 holes for a playoff victory over Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines, and later learned the source of Woods’ pain.

Woods said Wednesday that he had a torn ligament the last 10 months and a double stress fracture in his left leg that he suffered two weeks before the U.S. Open. He twice rallied from a one-shot deficit on the 18th hole, first to get into a playoff on Sunday, then to extend the playoff one extra hole.

He said he will have surgery to repair a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

“In light of this week’s revelation about Tiger’s health, it makes his performance in the U.S. Open that much more phenomenal,” Nicklaus said. “I have always said that the U.S. Open is the most difficult and complete examination of a golfer, and for him to persevere with a damaged knee and stress fracture is a testament not only to his ability, but his tremendously high level of competitiveness.”

Nicklaus issued a statement through his office because he was inundated with requests for comments.

As for Woods missing the rest of the year, Nicklaus said he understood— even if he could not relate.

“I am sincerely sorry for him,” said Nicklaus, captain of four Presidents Cup teams on which Woods played. “I understand how difficult it is for him to walk away from the game, especially with two major championships and a Ryder Cup on the horizon. But I also know that Tiger is a very intelligent young man, and he has made a decision that is best for the long term and the rest of his career.”

Nicklaus won a record-tying four U.S. Opens among his 18 professional majors, and he was never slowed by injury until late in his career. He only withdrew from one major, the 1983 Masters, with a back injury after the tournament started.

Woods’ season-ending surgery means he will not be able to catch one record that Nicklaus owns—146 consecutive majors played, a streak that coincidentally ended 10 years ago at Royal Birkdale when Nicklaus did not play the British Open.

“Tiger is one of the best-conditioned golfers I have ever been around, so I fully expect for him to do what is necessary to get back to competitive shape in the shortest amount of time possible and return strong next season,” Nicklaus said. “Personally, I look forward to that return. Tiger is a great person and great champion, and he is important to the game of golf.”
