Langer had mixed bag of Hogans a while back. I recall 2, 3 and 4 were raw finish, rest were chromed. Supposedly he wanted an exact weight to the gramme so had the long irons de-chromed.

Pavin used raw 588s in the early 90s, they looked awful, almost black.

Can't see the benefits in longer clubs, wedges yes, a 2 iron no.

Personally the diff between chrome, satin and raw is limited if the grooves are clean and sharp and a good strike is made. I have a satin chrome Vokey, an Oil Can and a Nickel Mizuno in the bag, all spin well.

I hear ya Healer. No real performance benefit to the raw. The look of the raw Nikes just started really growing on me. After you mentioned Langer's raw Hogans it reminded me. I'm pretty sure Beemer's custom Hogans are raw. Am I remembering that right?

Yeah, Beem's Hogans are raw. I think the raw looks cool, nothing really for performance...just the look. I owned a few sets of 588's that were gun metal and if you removed the gun metal they were raw, and would rust. I'm sure the gun metal TA-1's would do the exact same thing...soak them in Coke and the finish will remove and then you've got a raw head.

I was lucky enough to play with Langer this summer prior to the Austrian Open. Of course the clubmaker in me was very interested in what Mr Langer had in his bag, immediately noticed the ray and really really ruty long irons.

I was warming up next to him on the range, and kept thinking for a couple of holes. I finally askied him if my conclusion that he wanted some more spin on the long ironshots was right, and he agreed. It is at least part of the idea behind it. It is all about getting those long irons to hold a little better on firm, countertop greens or near tight pin-placements. He can get the flight up and stop the shots better when he is attacking par5s or has to hit long irons into par4s....

It was a great experience by the way......

After like 4 holes it suddenly hit me and I took some time thinking ....... and YES.....he was the first MASTERS CHAMPION I was playing with.........

If someone is interested he plays a FT-3 with an ACCRA SE 80, Hogan Apex Blades Dynamic Gold Green Victory Grips rotated 15° ( poor Clubmaker who has to do that right on a whole set...). The grips looked JumboJumbo...

AND THANK GOD I HIT THE BALL SO GREAT THAT DAY  ( HUGE DRIVES, SUPERB BUNKERSHOTS, CRISP IRONPLAY ), that I almost didn't notice myself how embarrassing my putting was..... (cool)
