Oregon Coast golf

In a month or so, I will finally be leaving Iraq and heading home. After I get home, I will be taking some much needed vacation, and taking the family to see parents. Mine are in Northern California, hers are in WA. We are going to cruise up the coast, with my parents along. I would like to find some good courses to play along the trip. Bandon is out of the question because my Dad is disabled and will most likely need a cart, although I will play it some day.

You can actually get him a cart at Bandon if he can get a Handicap permit. They make you take a caddy and have him drive but this option is available for those that truely need it.

As for other suggestions (going North), There is nothing really in N Cali, Salmon Run in Brookings is supposed to be good, Ocean Dunes in Florence, (Sand Pines is OK too but I prefer Ocean Dunes its much more of a coastal links than SP which is much more modern) Salishan near Lincoln City, if you can somehow get on Astoria CC is excellent, you could try Gearhardt Links is Gearhardt, it was built in 1885 and is the oldest course in the NW its short but firm fast and fun. Not sure about WA.

The first list was a good one and I have some real time updates on some of these... Salishan has been newly renovated and they put in 30 miles of drainage, so it is very playable. Gearhart is also looking new and is doing quite well since it was renovated, and since it now has grass. I play it and Astoria CC twice a week so I have a good feel for their current status. Astoria is truly unique, and a pleasure to play, but you would have to have a reciprocalmembership at another CC to get on. I think Sandpines is fun, and would guess that it would drain pretty well because of the sand underneath it.

Don't forget stop if you get to Gearhart, come meet the oldest living golf pro (The Real Discount Dan) at The Highlands Golf Course which is 2 miles north of Gearhart. He will probably insult you, and he would tell you to go away if you asked for a cart, but he does that to everyone who comes in the door. It means that he likes you... If he doesn't say anything to you, I would suggest running away. Huge supply of clubs though in case you want to stop and drool a bit..

You can get carts at Bandon Dunes for Handicapped players. The only issue will be getting reservations. Try having someone call now to reserve for later in the year.

If you want to come inland a bit Ill take you guys out to Eugene CC excellent track which is in the Top 100 and is hosting the 2008 US Womans Am amongst other top tourneys.
