I am guessing that Titleist has had 1 million requests for Spin milled gap wedges since they come out. I have been responsible for 100 as a representative of my customers who bought Spin Milled Sand And Lobs...

I can only guess that they experiene a distance loss in the lofts less than 54 due to over-spinning the ball (particularly a Pro V1). Or at least some kind of a performance snafu in the gap wedges...

They should probably release them even if they don't work well, just to keep the Club Ho's off of their backs...

i know what you mean. i've actually lost sales where people didn't buy the sand and lob spin mills becuase they couldn't get the matching gap wedge. even had some people not believe me when i say that titleist doens't even make a 52. my guess would be that they just chew the balls up too much at those lofts with full swings unlike 3/4 sand and lob shots.

I bought a 54/10 and had it bent to 52/08, seems to work.

I think thats the best i can hope for in a 52* Spin Milled.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing to replace my 252.08 Vokey.

Golow is correct. 54,56,58,60 will be the only spin milled offerings. Try a regular Oil Can. They seem to spin enough. I don't understand why everyone would wants a 52 degree Spin Mill anyway. Why would you want that much spin on a approach wedge? Spin on a approach wedge is only good if you can control your spin to begin with. Besides gap wedges are for Girls and old men that play most of their approach shots from 100 and in. Learn to control your distances.

Well, this old man (50 yrs) says Gap Wedges are great - they are a real PW. The std PW is really an old 9i - so here's a wedgie to the young whippersnapper who made the salacious comment about Gaps.

I've found that the distance gap between todays 46-47 PW and a 52 is a bit much - there seems to be a real distance loss between the iron set and a gap - even Phil Mickelson has played a 47 PW and then a 50 gap. I play 46-50 or 47-50.

As to spin, the SM will lose a bit of distance due to the spin on full shots, especially if you use a softer tipped shaft like the Spinners. Not so much in a DGS300.

Personally, I don't think you need a SM in a gap if you play a softer tipped shaft. But for those gorillas who play stiff tipped shafts, bending the 54 can work for you. For the rest of you, softstep your stiff shaft and go with the basic Vokey. If it doesn't stop and drop, then something else is the problem - like your choice of ball or technique.

  • 3 weeks later...

If people have approach shots from 100 in isn't that usually a good thing. It is called scoring for a reason. If you ask me putting a ball 10 feet from a pin at 80 yrd compared to 150 yrds is pretty easy. Think about what you say. Most of the better golfers i know find the need to carry 4 wedges.....definately helps. I don't know what you were thinking with that comment. Tiger believes in 4 wedges......are you better than Tiger. Point made.

i will agree with you on why does everyone want a 52* spin milled. thats a lot of spin for a club you will typically be using for full and 3/4 shots. however, i think you are way off base with gap wedges are for girls and old men. i play a 3 wedge setup pw (47*), 52*, and 58* and i am 27 years old. i prefer the 52 as it does close the gap behind the pw, has a lower trajectory (but is still easy to flop), and is easier to control for chips. when i played yesterday (and trust me it was not a round i wish to ever speak of again) 3 holes i was with in a hundred yards of the green for my second shot on two of holes (par 4) and third shot on the other hole (par 5). i'm hitting g.i.r's and am 100 yards or in.

i'm not sure tiger believes in 4 wedges as he only carries 3 wedges; pw (rumor is it is 50*), sw (56*), and lw (60*). i could be wrong on the the 50*, but tiger does play his lofts very weak. however phil michelson has been known to drop a long iron to carry 4 wedges for certain course setups.
