Hello AZ WRXers

I will be in Phoenix Sun/Mon and will try to squeeze 18 in if my customer visit doesn't get in the way (BTW current temp in Ontario is -20C). I'm looking for something reasonably priced that would be close to Sky Harbour and most importantly, they must have lefty rental clubs.

Try the Legacy course pretty close to the airport and they should have lefties available

I would suggest www.golfnow.com to book the tee time should be a better rate

Played Southern Dunes for the second time over the holiday break.

The putting surfaces are DORMANT BERMUDA and as the others have mentioned, very smooth, true and lightning fast. You don't see many courses not overseeding the greens, especially public courses that get a lot of rounds. It is the first I've encountered this surface in AZ for a long long time. I liked it a lot, but hope that the increased traffic of public play doesn't wear them out before springtime.

The course is definitely one that requires local knowledge. As of yet, there is no yardage guidebook to help out the first timer, and I suspect this is due to its history as a members course. I was out there over Thanksgiving and there were crews with GPS out there mapping the course so something should be available soon. #14 was mentioned as a hole where you stand on the tee and say WTF? As well, one needs to know the green shapes and contours to deal with the blind/obstructed shots. For example, the par 3 17th, blind tee over the dune, all that is visible is the top of the flagstick. After the first play, you discover that there is bailout to the left (not visible), but the right side is bunkerville (visible from the tee).

One thing for sure, if you stray from the turf, the thick "native" grass will swallow up your ball. It is better to be way off as the grass thins out the farther away you get.

The course was playing firm and fast, my favorite conditions.

FUN COURSE and highly recommended!

It's minus 20 in Chicago...working on changing to the Stack and Tilt swing...time to get out of the frozen tundra and see if the dome work has paid off. Leaving next Thursday. Flight is booked...lodging and golf up in the air a bit so any opinions on the following would be greatly appreciated.

Booking a package through Sonoran Suites with the following courses...both of the Gold Canyon courses (have played them and love them). Southern Dunes which everyone here is giving rave reviews but then ASU Karsten, Foothills, Dove Valley and Rancho Manana.

Haven't read great reviews on those 4 and would rather upgrade the package now before it's booked. Any thoughts on these tracks? My December trip was Legacy for 3 rounds, the 2 Grayhawk Courses, 2 rounds between the Ocotillo 9's. Very pleased with the courses and something comparable would be great.

Thanks so much!

Dove Valley actually doesn't look too bad at all. The only issue you may have is the drive depending on where you are staying. I was almost going ot play there, but decided to go back to TPC since my wife had spent enough time waiting for me to get back.

Dove Valley is ok, I almost had to kick the cr*p out of a regular there last time I played. (never been back still ticks me off just thinking about it) Rancho Manana is short but a nice track. Foothills can be skipped. Karsten is a bit quirky in a Pete Dye kinda way, but a decent track

I would suggest Eagle Mountain, Legend Trail, Sunridge Canyon, and most importantly We Ko Pa. There is always Boulders and Troon too.

Haha the course is nice, I would play it again, but I just keep remembering the "incident" whenever I think of booking a tee time and never ended up playing it again. I thought I told you this story, but I guess not. Anyways way off the topic of the thread but funny nontheless.

This happened on 4th of july. The course is packed (3 groups deep on the first) tee since everyone wants to get out before it hits 110 deg. Not to blame anyone but, we are looking at a 5+ hr round, understandibly frustrating for everyone.

We do our part and keep up with the group ahead of us never getting more than 1/2 hole behind.

Behind us are 2 fathers(1 playing badly) and 3 kids(all playing) best guess ages 12-17.

We get to the back 9 and one of them just pipes one right into our 4 some (no big deal they yelled fore) we are thinking maybe one of the kids wasnt used to playing from the forward tees and really gets ahold of one or something and move on.

Three holes later on 17 short par 5 we have to wait for the green to clear since 3 of us have 195-215 left to the pin. We are standing in the middle of the fairway I am wearing my bright orange FJ shirt so I know they can see me and what do you know a ball comes screaming right by me. I turned back to the tee and put my arms up like WTF are you doing and Boom another ball comes right at me followed by some obcenities by one of the fathers. Now had I been playing with my normal group and kids not been involved I would have sent both those balls piping right back at them, but since they had kids I threw the balls into a Cholla Cactus(really nasty cactus) and moved on. The best part is this happens right in front of a marshall I look at him and say are you kidding are you going to do anything about this and he drove off the opposite direction. Although I will admit I did proceed to take my sweet time on 17 and 18 after this happend

Fast forward and the round is over I get in my car and am driving by the 18th green and see one of the fathers I stop to tell him what a great job of parenting he is doing(when he is away from the kids) and that he is doing a great job teaching his kids golf etiquette (heavy sarcasm) He blows up and starts calling me a D bag and swearing saying we should have played faster, we had no right to be in his way we should have hit into the group on the green etc all mixed in with some nice profanity.

After some more sarcasm from me ie: jez its no wonder where your kids get their manners etc etc: I remind him that we were right with the group ahead of us for all but the last hole since we had to let the green clear. He goes on his D bag tirade again followed by some more F u's minor threats etc. Now the thought enters my mind do I really want to beat this guy down on the course :aggressive: and in front of his kids. Logic and the thought of stooping to that level prevail plus possible jail time.

Then one of the best lines I have heard on the course comes out of him. "Just cause my kid can hit it farther than you stop your b**chn." I laughed hysterically then I ask "how much closer are the white tees again? Not to get into a pissing match between me and baby tiger there, but there is quite a difference between 6900 and 5500 yrds not to mention the 50+ yards the white tees spotted el Tigre on number 17 ."

He goes of on another tirade and some threats were made, at this point I step out of the car and he took a closer look at me and proceeded to back down as I would assume the sight of a 6'2 200+ pound guy getting out of the car and walking towards him gave him a little dose of reality. Well thats why I have never gone back to Dove Valley. I like the course but if I run into father of the year again I just dont know what would happen

That is priceless. I thought my Eagle Mountain story was funny, but yours defintely takes the cake!

I personally like karsten. Fun course to play and the site of my best (and most costly) shot ever (cousins and i were aggressively betting closest to the hole and I nailed the flag stick and my ball flew off the green... ouch).

Gold Canyon Dinosaur Mountain course is gorgeous. Love that course, and easily some of the best holes I've played in the Phoenix area.

I'd also suggest Troon North.

At all costs stay away from Orange Tree. What a crappy course for the price they charge. Only reason I played it is because we stayed at Orange Tree one year.

My dive course pick is San Marcos if you are out there in the summer. But then again, when its god-awful hot, you can get a good deal at quite a lot of places.

OK...feedback on the courses...played ASU twice...not in the best of condition...greens very slow (thought I was playing in Chicago in January) but a fair course. Liked the fact that you couldn't find many flat lies and if you missed the fairways, you were in trouble.

The Gold Canyon courses are spectacular. Dino Mtn is my fav but the lack of a range and no drivers allowed makes the warm up a bit different. Outstanding greens...fast as all get up...lots of undulation. Sidewinder isn't the same challenge but still very playable.

The Raven was outstanding. Played the first 18 in under 3 hours. Great use of the terrain...outcroppings, canyons...best service. The back 18 was 5.5 hours...seemed like forever after the morning round. They also give you a choice of dinner or lunch. So for $70 played 36, range balls, fed, treated incredibly well.

Played the Foothills on Monday AM. Was told that the course was poor and found it to be in fantastic shape and a lot of fun. Great greens...fair track...lots of interesting holes.

It looks like I might be moving to Scottsdale or Phoenix. I am looking for a good golf home course (must have great practice facility). I would like something where I can find some playing partners. I am 40 and around a 3hdcp if that helps in course recomendations. I am willing to pay a membership fee if required.

I have a family so tennis courts and a fitness facility would also be nice. Also concerned about schools for my 12 year old daughter.

In North Scottsdale/Phoenix/CaveCreek alone there are a ton of choices

Public courses

Legend Trail

Troon

Grayhawk

TPC Scottsdale

Boulders

Dove Valley Ranch

Rancho Manana

Wildfire/resort course but sells an annual pass I believe.

Boulders

More towards east Scottsdale/ Fountain Hills

Ancala CC (private Pete Dye Design)

Eagle Mtn

Sunridge Canyon

Private all depends on the budget it goes from expensive to brutally expensive

Tatum Ranch

Dc Ranch CC

Troon CC

Desert Highlands CC

Whisper Rock(Good luck with this one) Home to Badds, Mickelson, McCord and others.

Desert Mountain. If you can afford it it has to be one of the best golf clubs in the country. 6 Nicklaus designed tracks all absolutley stunning. Desert Mtn

picGolfOver01.jpg

There is 3 or four others way up in North Scottsdale but the names elude me right now

Grayhawk/Troon/Legend Trail and almost all of the private clubs have residential communities planned around them with some of the homes for sale that include a membership or discounted rates like the Troon Card.

Anyways welcome and enjoy all the great golf that we have out here.

As mentioned previously I played several courses last week in the West Valley that don't get a lot of press so this may be of interest especially as they are pretty good values being out of the Scottsdale/Fountain Hills "must Play" hit list's.

1) Golf Club of Estrella- Nice Troon managed layout. Reminded me of Legend Trail.

A steal at $45.00!

2) Los Caballeros (Wickenburg) I had been told that this place was a hidden gem. Very cool course in a very nice, friendly, laid back golf club. Felt like I was playing a non desert course in the middle of the desert. A thinking man's layout. True golf! $75.00 and worth it if your up for a nice drive.

3) Copper Canyon- Another Troon property . While not as challenging or in quite as breathtaking a location this course was every bit as well kept as Troon North. Superb facilities and well laid out .If your a mid handicapper looking for a fun day it's a definite keeper.$69.00

All in all for under a $70.00 average for in season play all three of these places exceeded my expectations.

Cheers,

Brad

  • 4 weeks later...

played ocotillo on thursday, long bow on friday, and then have made the trip up to desert mountain for yesterday, today, and tomorrow. ocotillo was in very good shape tee to green, but the greens were firm, a little beat up, and fairly slow. played the blue and the white. long bow was in really good shape. greens were also pretty firm. i'm guessing this is because both courses have bermuda greens? i really liked the course other than the airport being so close.

Wow you guys are experts

I am in Mesa right now on a little trip with my wife she is working and I am playing golf.

Played a beautiful course today Superstition Springs Golf Club

Not real tough but gorgeous nice layout and beautiful greens and fairways no rough to speak of.

There is a lot of water and sand and some of the greens are huge. I am looking at either Arizona Golf Las Sen das or Stonecreek for tomorrow . Or I would love a better suggestion in the Mesa area

I paid a hundred to play today and thats about as much as I want to spend the way I am playing

Hey if anyone wants to play that lives here I would love it.

I got tomorrow and Thursday so two more rounds PM me if you want to have a game.

I got to play today with oneputt bluncer aka Matt

and fore_life aka Mark at there home couse Ahwatukee Country Club. What a nice golf course and the greens were excellent and fast. Really a nice facility and I enjoyed the course immensely but it was all nothing next to how I was treated by Mark and Matt these are two fine young men and a pleasure to play golf with.

They put up with my stories and jokes (and how good I used to be ) along with how damn old and arthritic I am now with a smile. Now these are true gentleman

Yes, Ken, all that stuff about Matt is true(I haven't met Mark), but you haven't answered the important question: did Matt hit any fairways? :busted2:

(from the guy who went from finding bunkers in Phoenix to ...... finding a bunch of them on Saturday for the first round back in Canada...lol..)

Thank you very much for the kinda words Ken. Thank you for the good laughs and stories it was just what I needed yesterday after I got the bad news. Anytime you are out here let me know and we will get another round in.

Thanks for your concern Pat :D , I did manage to find quite a few fairways. :partytime2:

I'll echo the thoughts that Matt is a great guy to play golf with. No Anna Nordquist, but who is?

That is very true, Its pretty tough to beat a 6 foot swede with game like hers.

This was solid advice! - Thanks One Putt Blunder

Used this to book a group of 7 first timers (I strongly suggest renting a house as we did - beats doubling up in condos) for the 3rd week of April, and a couple of locals were so surprised that we picked some of these. Played 13 rounds in 8 days so we were trying to stay within a budget for a couple of tight-wads. Most of our caps in the 10-17 range except for our Irishman with a 5 who holed out on #15 at Eagle Mountain and beat Padraig Harrington when he was 17.

Here is my feedback

  1. Raven At Verrado - great shape great value for the money - if you want to play your day of landing at the airport do this one otherwise fairly long drive to Scottsdale
  2. TPC Champions - if you like firm and fast then OK - good shape but it was windy in the a.m. Good value for out of towners - We originally were going to Legend Trail but read this site that suggested it was in poor shape so backed out and played here
  3. Eagle Mountain - one of my faves - just a very playable track. Has some houses. One of our guys is long avg. 290 but wild so he had an aversion to some holes
  4. Raven At South Mountain - Reasonable but it is more of a parkland traditional layout - On return visit we would not play here. It's more on the style of the course as conditions and value were ok
  5. Only played a single round at Wekopa opting for Saguaro - One of my all time favourite courses ever - condition, pace were just awesome - they give you a food voucher included in your green fee so it's only slightly above the average price of the courses we played - not a single house and cart path only, no problem except for one guy in our group.
  6. Gold Canyon Sidewinder - I would not bother with this one. Gold Canyon will really strike you as a resort course atmosphere - you can't hit driver on the range here and you hit from mats. A ton of houses
  7. Gold Canyon Dinosaur - really nice course only a few houses. If I did it again we would play this one twice
  8. Sunridge Canyon - really tough course with great service and food - the 18th hole is probably the toughest finishing hole within this group, although Wekopa Saguaro 18 was pretty tough into the wind. Another good value track

We booked advance tee time for the replays as did not like our chances with golfnow for those double days. Still averaged about US$85 a round

Some other notes for northerners - play your good round in the a.m. That dry heat just sucks everything out of you in the afternoon. Probably had about 12 bottles of water, 2 poweraides, on these rounds, did not feel any sweat, and did not have to water a cactus until the end of the round.

Now the challenge is on for next year to find courses with no houses for our complaining wild dude! I think we have to go upscale a bit as most of everything is a housing community

Guys im a fan of CHEAP courses that are great and offer a great value and are well maintained. DO NOT miss these courses.

Ironwood (located in an old folks community in Chandler)

LoneTree (S. Gilbert)

Superstition Springs (E Mesa...awesome layout)

Las Colinas ($19 all summer, usually well maintained and includes LUNCH!)

Augusta Ranch! (long exec course that you will use every club in your bag. FUN)
