Golf Club Features and Benefits

• Designed by Master Wilson Craftsman Robert Mendrella Arnold Palmer

• 8802 is a classic heel-shafted blade putter

About the golf club manufacturer

In 1914, the Ashland Manufacturing Company entered the sporting goods business. Soon renamed Thomas E. Wilson & Co., this marked the beginning of Wilson’s historic contributions to the game of golf. Wilson has always looked to players to help shape its products. In 1922 Gene Sarazen became a member of the Wilson advisory staff (the beginning of a 75 year relationship with the company) During his tenure with Wilson, Sarazen won 39 PGA Titles including 2 US Opens, 3 PGA Championships, a British Open Title and a Masters Victory. He was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame in 1974. Wilson Golf is marking 90 years in the game by re-launching its Wilson Staff brand, first introduced in 1960. This reincarnation includes a full line of redesigned equipment (irons, drivers, utilities, putters, wedges), balls and accessories for players of all skill levels.

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful putters ever created. Starting with the Wilson Designed by Arnold Palmer up to today's tributes by Cameron and Bettinardi, this design is still the ultimate for feedback and feel.

My favorite part of this putter, and the one thing that nobody has been able to duplicate is the fat paddle leather grip. Having putted one of these with the original leather, there is no better feeling.

Only three versions have really surpassed the original: Bettinardi BB2, Cameron 1996/500 copper Napa, and Cleveland Designed by BeCu.

For the purist, there is no substiture for an 8802 putter. If you have never used one, this will bring your definition of feel to a whole new level.

I have putted with one that is the size of a nickel. A friend had one when i started playing serious in 1985. He is dead now. I have one of the 70's model reproductions. Head speed shaft, Button on end cap. Leather grip. Its the size of a quarter. I play with what was called the improved 8802 that Ben Crenshaw designed for Walter Hagen/Wilson. I bought a used one in 1985 and then I bought a new one the next spring. It sat at my mothers house for about 19 years. They moved and I forgot about it. You can putt it on the toe to kill a right to left putt. Putt it on the heel to hold a left to right one. You can hover it in the fringe and make a good putt. I owned a Scotty Cameron Napa. Didn't care much for it. Just Didn't have the feel the really old ones have. Its not a straight back and straight thru stroke. You have to open and close the door.

Im gaming the 8802 again these days.

Worked wonders for my putting stats. I grew up playing these blades (Tommy Armours etc etc) and always struggled with todays Anser styled blades.

I was using the Sophia last season, which I loved, but found the grooves put sidespin on the ball sometimes and I also struggled with longer putts with it (ie: distance control)

I also tried the 8862 recently, but found the insert a touch too soft for my liking.

Nice to be hitting good putts again and the 8802 will really help you with your stroke.

Cheers

Not to nitpick too much, but shouldn't this be "designed by Arnold Palmer" and not Mendralla?

I have a MacGregor Muirfield (wizard 600 clone) and it has helped me tremendously in the last month with my putting. I have had alot of putters, including 2 bobby grace models in my closet, and nothing rolls the ball for me like this blade putter. Last year as I was on the way home from Iraq and we stopped for the night in Spain, I touched a golf club and played 18 holes for the first time in over four months. The club gave me a nice set of Callaways to use and some hi-tech putter. I asked them if they had a Wilson 8802 or something like it, and lo and behold they did. I went and shot 84 because a. I hit 3 wood off the tee on every par 4 & 5, and b. I putted lights out with that Wilson blade. I'd had mine for a few years and putted with it mostly on ultra fast greens (great for that), but didn't start using it all the time until a month ago. Had to swap one of my bobby grace putters with my son to get it back. Now I'm starting to get really confident on the greens, whereas before I had always considered myself a very average putter. If I can get that part of my game going I'll be able to shoot lower scores on a much more consistent basis.

I just recently obtained a Callaway Arnold Palmer 8802 and putted lights out with it on the Blue Monster @ Doral, the Gold course @ Tiburon, Blackwolf Run, and the Irish & Straits courses @ Whistling Straits. It's a perfectly balanced, fairly light putter, and on those unbelieveably fast greens it was a real confidence builder. I guess it just goes to show you don't need a computer designed, radar guided, heatseeking, 21st century monstrocity to putt well. :D

I acquired a Mizuno Bettinardi BC 7 about a year ago off ebay, $275 putter for 60 bucks. Messed with it off and on, but it was a little heavy for the courses I played on in South Georgia. Now that I'm in England it's perfect. The greens here are generally slower and some have multiple grasses on them. Add to it the FIT face technology and it really turns the ball over and helps hold the line, especially in the high winds we have been playing in the past two months.

those looking for an original vintage era 8802 but cant find -here is a secret. look for a wilson tourspecial 1 . same head just not the head speed shaft. i have an original tour special 1 from mid 60,s i would put up against any 8802. paid 20$ for it with leather grip. only the no1 is the same. no 2 has less offset and no 3?
