Interesting use of the alignment poles

nto sure what to make of this "drill"

Ok took these Monday afternoon at the US Bank in Milwaukee, don't Know the name of the pro, believe he is an Aussie. Anyway he took one of the "famous" alignment poles, stuck it in to an iron via the grip cap and was swinging with it/doing drills.. ( Attached photo sequences for fun) Not sure what he was trying to accomplish. also put on a fanny pack of sorts for some purpose while doing this... Any one care to hazard a guess what this was supposed to do for him?

If the extension hits against your left torso before impact I'd think that you're left wrist was breaking down/flipping?

Its to stop the wrists fliping and the fanny pack is to stop the bruises ( quite painfull ) also helped keep my arms and body working together

Ok that is kinda what I was thinking, but I was also thinking "Man that looks odd.. and painful," as he was wapping himself pretty well a few times on the follow through. BTW Pics fixed now, linked them instead to make the sequence come out correct.

 

Wouldn't this F-up the end of the grips? Those poles are fairly think aren't they?

 

FWIW Saw more players than just him doing this... he was just the most "stuck" on the drill.

used my 9 iron for this drill you can hold it along the grip but that can get painfull to or get a old 9 iron and put the pole down through grip ,it has not affected my 9 iron at all it is quite hard to push in the first few times.

wow, I thought I was the "inventor" of that drill. It is a great drill, especially if you have a problem with "flipping" your wrists, like I did.

 

But it does look like you got your butt whipped by dad when you get done. Now I finally have a use for the fanny pack my mom gave me in 8th grade!

It will also show you your swing plane on the backswing.

Quick question, when you address the ball..wouldnt that thing be hitting you in the gut.? Or do you have to start the swing half way back...then swing from that point thru the finish? More or less , is the first picture..the actual beginning of his swing?

It points up the left side and puts your hands and arms in the correct position too it takes a bit of getting used too but once you start getting it correct you start to compress the ball better only try to hit the ball 40-50 yds with a 9 iron .

This also gives one a great visual of the butt of the club pointing at the target line in order to make sure you're on-plane. I sometimes use a tee, but this would really make it obvious.

It's a drill I use every single day with a coat hanger........only you don't have to go to all of that effort, it works a LOT more efficiently, and you can set up properly.........just keeps the "levers" established at the top intact into the throughswing, monitor where the butt of the club travels, and you can trace the plane line/target line with the stick.........fantastic practice IMOP

seems like it would be a good drill coupled with an impact bag, so you would have to worry about hitting yourself on the through swing.
