New Mactec NVG2 Driver

All, your expert insights welcome.

 

From a non-technical specs perspective, what would be the most significant performance enhancement between the new Mactec NVG2 ($299) and the Mactec NVG2 Tour ($449) version? I.E.: In general, what does the extra $150 buy you off the tee?

 

Even though I disliked the original Mactec (stiff shaft played far too whippy) and I hit my current FT-3 stiff NVS very well, I am somewhat intrigued by this new NVG2.

I think another difference in the two is the shaft. The nvg2 is listed with a fujikura shaft but the nvg2 tour is listed with a speeder in it. But $150 worth of difference I don't know about that I'll have to try it first.

I can't wait for the new one. While I don't really love the look of the old one, I cannot argue with the results. IMO it's one fantastic driver. I seem to be among the few BUT I even LOVE the original quadra shaft. It fits my swing perfectly and really does give me a nice extra pop.

 

What loft/shaft flexes in version 2 did you get to try? Also, I've read that the tour speeder shaft is a modified speeder which incorporates the quadra action into it. Did you notice any difference between it and a stock speeder? Anyone seen an online retailer advertising the new ones yet for purchase?

the biggest difference is the cup face, its also has a flatter face than last year. The sound is 100% better also, thinner crown. I own the tour and the NVG2, both are good, the tour is awesome. That club is the reason Golfsmith just signed a contract with them. Hopfully Bads will play it this year and give it some exposure. I just got back from the show in Orlando and MacGregor had the biggest buzz, by far

Was there the same buzz around Macgregor’s new irons? They look a bit space age, albeit that is not necessarily a bad thing.

The new mactec m685 irons look very nice for a players CB.

I know I'm very interested in this new NVG2 tour driver. Maybe even more than the exotics.

Yes, those irons look good. I play the 565’s and the 455’s are my backup (love them both); hence, I have a bias to Macgregor irons.

 

It looks like Jose Maria Olazabal is using the new Mactec NVG2 Tour.

Does your friend know when they will actually be released? I can't find a date anywhere for the drivers. Oh, and if that friend happened to have another stiff flex tour 10 degree lying around I could help them clear some space :cheesy:

A friend of mine told me he used one over the weekend and hit it miles. Wasn't sure whether or not to believe him until I read this forum. Does anyone know if they're just designed to hit miles or if you can shape the ball with them?

Ha, I wish. They are expecting to ship Feb 15, the final heads arent even here yet from China.....

I saw the numbers from internal testing, and it was longer than the other drivers in the test. But the real suprise came from the dispersion test. It was miles straighter than anyone else.

They also are working on a driver with Olie, I've seen the protos and its awesome. I'll let you know when those numbers come in. Just FYI, Olie played this weekend with a 905r because he's pissed that his driver isnt ready.

Biggest differences between MACTEC 2 and MACTEC Tour:

 

The MACTEC 2 has no separate crown insert and a different Fuji shaft.

 

The MACTEC Tour has the separate crown insert (much thinner) and a Speeder shaft, plus it has a couple little rubbery plastic inserts on the sole to dampen the sound and vibration.

 

So the Tour version is tuned to sound more like a "better players" club and has a little bit lower CG and higher-end shaft.

 

EDIT: A couple other quick things I just remembered. The NVG 2 is set up for more draw bias, with slightly closed faces and 17 grams of tungsten in the back heel area. The Tour models all have one-degree open faces, and only 14 grams of tungsten in the back heel.
