2006 PGA SHOW REVIEW

Recommended Posts

Just got back from the PGA SHOW. Had a great time. As you might expect, it was crowded. The first thing my friends and I did was listen to a presentation by the Harmon brother's. It was great. The fielded questions from the audicence and from that, they talked about what came to their minds-usually a story or two about their father. One of the topics was that of technological advances in teaching and how it has not yielded a great yourng American player. The swings are looking a lot better, but not producing major championships. About 10 minutes into the presentation Bill answers the phone and says "sorry Tiger, Butch is in the middle of a speech, gotta go." It got a great laugh and was extremely funny. I couldn't believe that Buch's brother busted his chops so hard in front of everyone. They continue to talk about TW and the question of Buch vs. Haney was brought up. The class act that Butch is, he said TW was great with him, and he is great with Haney. Really didn't expect another answer from him. The Harmon brothers said that today's players rely on video analysis too much, and don't understand what makes the ball flight and how spin changes the flight. They said you shoud teach impact and understand where the hands are controlling the club face. Got to see everything from the Tri-ball putter to the latest and greatest divot tool! I was extremely impressed with the T.P. Mills booth. The TableRock booth was amazing, some great sticks there! I saw Rich Beem wearing jeans and a Tommy Bahama T-Shirt. Dean Reinmuth was talking on the phone and looked PISTED OFF! Walked by Leadbetter en route to a clinic.

Any questions? Feel free to ask, something you guys say will probably spark another topic!

Did you see Titleist's equipment?

do they sell those putters?

Yes, they sell all of the stuff they have for sale.

Is it just Titleist and Taylor Made that didn't buy into the show this year? Callaway was there, right? And pretty much everybody else, too, right?

Titleist, Taylor Made, and Nike were no shows. No Titleist or Taylor Made club to be seen. Nike had clubs to hit at the demo center, but not a big booth like last year. Callaway and Bridgestone had huge displays.

Thanks for the answer on who doesn't go. The big OEM's all bailed on the show at about the same time a few years ago. There was no big mystery to it. All the companies were facing tough economic times in flat golf equipment markets, and they all felt like the show had gotten too expensive and too diluted for them. They don't exactly ignore the show, but they don't pay the $$$ that it costs to set up and staff a display for the week.

Thanks for the coverage, Hawaii:

How about Mizuno? Did you go to their booth?

Did they have any new blades? Or just the MP 33 and MP 37?

Thanks, Lawson

No problem. Mizuno's offerings include the MP-32 blades and MP-60 split cavity irons. Both look and feel great. Also, check out their new driver. It has a "speed slot" cut around the back of the driver that moves the c.o.g. farther and deeper into the back of the club, launching the ball higher and with less spin.

Nike was at the show and at the Demo Day. Everyone wanted to hit the SQ, it was by far busiest station on the range. Nakashima had some Ozik shafts to demo in some of their drivers. Everything else was pretty standard.

Titleist doesn't attend the show. The only  or (cool) gear I saw was at the Table Rock booth. They had a TON of Cameron's. I'd say they had 5 Cameron 009's. Many prototype putters, commerative putters and Scotty Cameron autographed putters and memorabilia.

I only wish I could make it there, I'm having to settle on recording it off the Golf Channel. And yes they're selling putters. I believe they said within 19 minutes they had sold one for $25,000. It was an imitation of one Tiger had used. I would hate to see what the real one would have sold for.
