Correct me if I'm wrong, however I remember talk back in the day that King Snake pre-dated King Cobra, and it was King Cobra who hijacked the "brand name recognition" from King Snake....

Back in the day one of my playing partners was into building sets and selling to friends. He ordered 12 sets of King Snake heads from a distributor in Calif and when the shipment came in, there was 12 sets of heads but 4 of the sets were actual King Cobras. When he called the distributor, the guy said that he ordered that shipment directly from the factory and had them shipped directly to the buyer. He also told him and this is in the for what it's worth category, that Cobra authorized the King Snake look a likes from their factory, to negate anyone else from making copies. After all, all the monies with either set would wind up in Cobras coffers. If you put the snake and the king side by side, they were identical, only difference was the name.

My folks bought me a starter set of irons when I was in HS. Pal Joey's. Dead ringer of Ping Eye 2's.

Pal Joey's were quality clubs.  They were actually Dynacrafts retail version of clubs.  I think Tom Wishon had a hand in designing them.  They had a great knockoff of the big bertha SS woods, they weren't counterfit at all they had their own style, and a short hosel, but they had a similar shape and size, I actually liked the performance better.  I used the 3 wood for several years, it is actually one of my favorite 3 woods ever.  If you wanted a good club back in the 90's for a great price this was a good option.

I have a set of TS-1's from Maltby and they really are a good club. I miss the large marge drivers and stuff like that. new club for like 40 bucks if you had some epoxy grip tape, and mineral spirits to slide a grip on.

Who would have thought the hotbed for component golf clubs would have been Newark, Ohio. Dynacraft and Golfworks were so close together. I am lucky I am still able to go to golfworks well pre covid I could. They have really random stuff in their pro shop....heads that never made catalog. Fun stuff like that.

I had the King Snake which was a King Cobra knockoff years ago. Supposedly they were the same club head but sold "out the backdoor" of the foundry in China. Played them for a while until got a set of King Cobras at auction of a golf store closing.

I had a set of king snakes with non-descript graphite shafts (gold/black) when I was a junior golfer and had the pleasure of winning against some of those umm... "snobby"  Naples, FL kids with the latest and greatest at the time.   Paired with my Fuzzy Zoeler 5 wood, knock off adams tight lies driver, and some diamond face wedge it was quite the bag.

I don't know if this counts as a knockoff, but I bought some Golf Pride MCC's from ebay from a reputable seller, but when I got them, they had the gasoline smell (tell-tale sign of a fake). I emailed GP and reported the seller. I tossed them in the garage and forgot about them, eventually had an urgent need to regrip one of my wedges, put them on and ended up liking them better than the real thing. Will have to start the grip search again once they die since I won't support fakes.

You're confusing knock-offs with counterfeits.  Golf was interesting years ago when "inspired by" clubs abounded.

The first set I bought was pinemeadow, bertha knockoffs.

They were good.  For a poor college kid who wanted to learn.  When I upgraded to i10s, I was shocked - well, not really - what I was missing out on.  I also had two of the heads just pop off mid round too, but hey...it was like 175 bux for the whole set of irons.

  • 1 year later...

I bought a vintage Spalding carry bag off eBay because I wanted the bag, it came with a 3/5/7/9/PW set of Tour Model 2's and I really like them. I have original Ping Eye 2's and I compared loft angles and other dimensions they were an exact copy, groove spacing identical, everything.

I prefer this particular half set of Tour Models to my Ping Eye 2's because they have brand new Golf Pride wrap grips and are a 1/2" longer which works for me, my Pings have worn out original grips. The shafts are Dynamic Gold S300 which probably isn't the best for me but the clubs look like they were ordered and never played before I got them so just going to roll with it for now.

Also included were a set of Precision Made Driver and 3 wood, extremely small head on both of them. Appear to be early Taylor Made clones, both have a S300 shaft.

Ok the ugliest Iron thread made me think that maybe a best Knockoff Irons thread might be in order.. Did you ever have a set of Knockoffs you liked so much that it was hard justifying new HIgher end stuff? And I'm not talking about component stuff that is unique I'm talking true Knockoffs.

I played a set of Lynx Parallax Knockoffs called ESS (Expanded Sweet Spot) for about 5 years and loved them... Still have them in the garage in fact.

Do Scotty Cameron putters count?

My first set of irons were some my dad built with components from Golfsmith. I don’t think the heads were a direct copy of any major brand. The main issue was that he’d failed to do enough planning/research and ended up trimming all the length from the tip end of every shaft, so predictably they played way too stiff for either of us.

I hate the 10-5 M-F hours that they currently have.  It was so nice to be able to drive there and buy whatever I wanted on the weekends.  Especially during the summer when I'd already be in Zanesville at the all night Friday softball tournaments.
