Cutting down a PX shaft (Project X)

from 1 inch over to standard length
Hi all,

Looking for some advice from the master club fitters out there.

I am looking to purchase a set of Mizuno MP-60 irons from my local proshop (they are doing a run-out with the new MP 52/62 models coming out). The only issue is they have 1 inch over standard length PX shafts in them (5.5).

My question is if I want to get the PX shafts back to standard (in length AND playability), is it as simple as cutting them down to standard by removing 1 inch from the butt end (assuming they haven't been soft-stepped or hard-stepped)?

My understanding was that PXs are taper tipped shafts so they are all butt cut anyway. Can it be assumed that cutting them down to standard length will make them play as exactly the same as a standard set of PX 5.5s?

Advice sought urgent!

It's alright, I think I may have answered my own question :) -

Rifle Trimming Instructions (taken from www.royalprecision.com):

Any Project X, Rifle Flighted, and Rifle AirLite Rifle Project X, Rifle Flighted and Rifle AirLite Shafts are available in Irons only, in either parallel or taper tip. They are dedicated length shafts and are available as individual shafts or in sets. An example of an individual shaft is a 1I, 5I, SW, etc. An example of a set is 3-PW. These models require NO TIP TRIMMING even in parallel tip shafts. Simply install each shaft in the respective head and then cut to desired playing length from the butt only. Individual shafts can be used to build/re-shaft a particular club, but CANNOT be used to build sets. For example, building a set of golf clubs using Flighted 1I shafts that have been tip trimmed will not yield a properly shafted set of clubs. In fact, it would defeat the entire purpose of the dedicated shafts.

* Rifle Project X, Rifle Flighted and Rifle Airlite Shafts are dedicated length. Install and cut to length from the butt only. NO TIP TRIMMING NEEDED.

Yes, cut the butt end. Just pick up a yard stick ruler and a pipe cutter at home depot. Make sure you measure all the club lengths and mark the shaft correctly. Then use the pipe cutter to cut the shaft cleanly and evenly. The club lengths are not always exactly correct coming from the factory. It's best to double check them.

Or if you trust a club repair shop, ask them to cut the shafts for you.

If you take an inch of the butt, you will need to add around 12g of lead to each head to get the SW back to where it is now. This will more or less counter any flex change, so they then should play around the same.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Does anyone know definately (as opposed to assuming) whether Mizuno always use different weighted heads in their irons dependent on the length of the shaft?

For example, if these irons were built for 1 inch over standard PX 5.5s, will the swing weight change dramatically if I cut them down to standard length?

I wondering whether it has to be 'custom order' for Mizuno to install lighter heads... Or whether standard weighted heads would come with a 1 inch over PX shaft unless requested otherwise.

Any experts on Mizuno irons out there?

If you cut them down 1 inch, the swing weight should change 6 swing weights. They may be higher than D2 now, so check them first.

6 swing weights?! I had no idea it would anywhere near that much!

I will get them to check the swing weight now - I'm hoping it will be higher D's, so when I cut it down an inch it will be closer to D2.

Anyone else have any advice?

Having played 1" longer in the past, I am guessing your clubs will currently SW around D-8 to E-0 depending on grip and headweight. If they are, cut away! If not, then prior posts are correct, you will need to add weight to the heads.

Odd set to have 1" long in a 5.5. If there isn't enough speed to handle a stiffer shaft, likely not enough skill to handle 1" over standard!

Good luck!

Swing weight has nothing to do with Mizuno or any manufacturer. It is a physical measurement. Cutting a shaft 1" will make the clubs play 6 SW points lighter, regardless of manufacturer, shaft model, etc. 1 SW point is approximately 2g, so 1" = 12g.

The swing weight reduction listed is correct. But the manufacturer did design the club to have a typical swing weight with a standard length shaft. Most are designed to D2, so if you cut down it should be close to the swing weight listed by Mizuno. If its not high enough, you can always add lead tape until you find the right weight. Then add weights inside the shaft to replace the tape.
