What is torque?

I know this may sound stupid, but I have no clue!

Ok so what is torque? What is the differecence between a high torque shaft and a low torque shaft? ANy trajectory differences? What is more commom hi torque or low torque?

Well, torque is the rotation of the clubhead or shaft in a clockwise or counter clockwise axis. It's a twisting motion. Think of Twizzlers. They're torqued to make that spiral that they're known for. In golf, torque is a term that is used to describe what a clubhead does during the swing. Since all shafts have some degree of torque, the clubhead will always torque to some degree as well. A low-torque shaft will tend to hit balls straighter than a high torque shaft (with all else being equal). This is as simple as I could describe it. I'll have to defer the other questions to the experts. I'm sure that they'll add to my example as well. HTH, Simp

He is correct the lower the torque rating the less the head will what we call "osalate" during the downswing when the club is loaded. Think of it this way , the club head actually slightly rotates in a circle motion during the downswing so the less torque rating on the shaft the less the club face will do this. The better chance of you hitting the club face in the center of the clubface. That is why the better shafts and even stiffer shafts have a lower torque rating because the shaft does not osalate as much as the weaker more flexable shafts.

 

Less torque rating also means less dispersion left or right of the golf ball of the face of the club. In other words straighter shot dispersion which is why people spend so much money on a shaft with good torque ratings.

 

Find the shaft that works for you though, flex, kick, and such and then find the lowest torque rating for your specs.............
