Anyone using a lob wedge from the bunker?

I've always used a lob wedge in playing from the bunker. I currently use a Cleveland Gunmetal 900 (60.12) and prior to that, I had a Vokey Raw to the same specs. Does anyone else use their lob wedge from the bunker? If so, how much bounce does your wedge have? I only ask because in looking at the Spin Milled vokeys, I've noticed that the closest I could get to a 60.12 wedge would be to buy a 58 with eight degrees of bounce and bend it to a 60. I know that bounce depends on course conditions, but I just wanted to get a sense for what some of the fellows on this board are using.

I use a lob wedge in the greenside bunkers much more often than the sand wedge. Therefore, I'm scrapping the old 52, 56, 60 setup and move to 53 and 58 to allow another long club in the bag.

I get very good results from a pre-Vokey 60* Titleist wedge but hope to move to Mizuno or similar forging soon.

I believe that bounce is just one factor nin the equation. You also have to think about the amount of lob shots played outside the bunker, general turf condition, bunker sand density and camber of the sole. As well as your angle of attack. It's a never ending process of trial and error.

I guess I wouldn't change at all unless the grooves were completely non-existent.

i've used a couple of different setups for my wedges. i've used a 54.10 & 60.08 vokey, a 53.09 & 58.14 nike forged and currently have a 52.08 & 58.08 vokey. i will use both wedges out of a bunker, it just depends on what shot i need. do i need to get out, and let it roll it or do i need to get it out and land it soft or do i need to get it out in a hurry? i've found the more bounce can hurt me as many of the bunkers in north texas get hard, but the little bounce doesn't hurt me in the soft sand.

I use my 60 degree for shorter shots and my 56 for longer shots. If the sand is really soft then I'll use the 56 since it has more bounce. Both are Vokey Spin Milled.

I use my 588 RTG 60 out of greenside bunkers and it works really well for me. Our bunkers don't have alot of sand in them so can get pretty hard in the summer months, so a club with very little bounce works well. When playing other courses, I use my 588 RTG 53, just open it up a little more to create bounce...so far haven't had any problems.

Like was said above I moved to 53/58 last year and haven't missed a beat other than the fact I've been able to put a utility club in play.

Don't miss the 60* one bit. I'm playing a Mizuno MP 58.10, it's money. My buddy plays a Titleist 58.08 spin milled and he loves it. Both clubs are lower bounce than your used to but the soles are wide which creates a little bit of dynamic bounce so they probably play similar to say a 60.10....

Oh yea, to answer your question, yes, I've always used my Lob out of the sand. Just happens that my current Lob says 58 on the sole instead of 60...

You bet...My Mizuno MP 60/09 is actually the best Sand wedge I have ever used and a great Lob Wedge as well. I absolutely love it.

Truth be known, most PGA Tour Pros are using Lob Wedges most of the time from greenside bunkers, too.

I also carry a 54/09 but that is mostly used as a "finesse" wedge around the green when I need some extra spin. It only gets use from the sand when I am faced with an extra long bunker shot.

I was always under the impression that the more bounce, the better a steep swing is, more like a V shape than a rounder swing, since you can splash the club dwon under the ball without it getting stuck in. Is this wrong?

I have never really paid attention to the bounce of the club I use, although now, I use a 58* 8* bounce TP wedge from the bunkers. I have always just spent some time in our practice bunker until I get the feel down for how I want to hit the shot. I did have a 61* wedge with 12 degrees of bounce, but I found it very hard to use in fairways for tight lobs, so I ditched it. It was great from the bunker however...

Like I mentioned above, I do not know the theory of bounce and when it is applicable. Anyone have a general rule of thumb?

I have been using a Cleveland TA 588 60* lob wedge for short but high bunker shots, this is a great low bounce lob wedge for tight lies. Having said that, I just moved to a Cleveland TA 900 60* lob wedge with 8* of bounce and although I'm still getting used to it, I believe that the 8* bounce makes it a more versatile club than the 588 which only had 3* bounce. My course has deep greenside bunkers and almost everybody I know that plays it regularly use their lob wedge from these bunkers.

From deep bunkers or on very short bunker shots I have a 60* Callaway Forged+ which is perfect. The Callaway wedges have a lot of bounce and so are great from the bunker. On longer bunker shots, say 40 foot plus, I will use a 56* but for shorter ones I find the 60* very handy.

I found in Florida that both my TP wedges are just amazing from the bunker. I also found the CG10s I had last year to be great too...I think the narrower sole helps me dig into the sand more. Definitely helps to get the ball into the air, and the grooves on both sets get the ball to stop.
