New swing thanks to Hogans book

I was lost and now I am found
Last yr I became intrigued with trying to find a swing that will stay with me for a while without all of the tingering. I was playing to a true six but I just felt like I was working to hard to find a swing from week to week. I decided to work hard on my swing during the winter months. I have never had a lesson and I came across the hogan book for 6 dollars and thought why not. I could not put this book down!!!!!!!! Long story short I began to notice my swing was not that bad but setup and grip were way off. BUUUUUUTTTTTTTT what I have found is that Hogan mentions his right elbow n front and hitting his hip on the waggle - which got me to thinking- hey if you put the elbow in the right position early in the swing and keep it there than you have now created consistancy in your swing. I have taped my swing with and without this move and it is amazing how this one move really helped me keep the club in front on my chest and I started to hit the ball pure. This was not a one time range thing but that pure feeling stayed and now I only have to work on timing. Maybe I am crazy :cheesy: but I thought maybe someone out there has already discovered this or can tell me that I am way off or hurting my swing even more. I would be curious as to what you all think.
Thanks for reading.

I take a normal setup and start the club back with a one piece takeaway and when my hands get to my right hip I try to keep my right elbow as close to the right hip until momentum takes the club to the top. When I don't concentrate on this my elbow is all over the place in the back swing. When I use this method it help my elbow stay connected longer or so it seems. Things really feel compact and solid. I even use this with my pitching from around 20 to 40 yrds away. I just keep the elbow tuck to my side and the swings stays on plane better. Hope this makes sense

yeah. I was trying to remember what he was saying as I was hitting the range balls and the one thing that stuck with me was make your right elbow hit your right hip on your waggle. Well if he was wanting you to do it on your waggle then I figured why not make sure that I was doing it on the real swing.

Like I said, maybe I am hurting myself even more.

I have to agree that the position of the right elbow basically sets up the path of the downswing. Personally I make my most solid and consistent swings when my right elbow is behind me at the top of my backswing. The natural motion of just turning my shoulders and chest back toward the target on the downswing starts the action of right elbow straigtening and puts the club into the slot it needs to be in to put the club on plane. When I do this properly is just happens and I don't have to think about it.

That ball flight is on a much more flatter traj. but the yardages are about the same maybe a few yrds longer. What is really interesting is that when I use this elbow technique on the takeaway I know that the club is on the same path everytime and I can repeat and in turn I can turn on the heat at impact because I am in a great postion. I would have thought that maybe I was making this up but I went to Golf galaxy last week and my friend put me on the machine again and we watched last yr swing compared to this yr swing and low amd behold my club was not inside anymore and the pro hooks have gone away to a little cut or little draw. I will continue to work on this. Glad others know what I am talking about. Look at GD and look at the swing seq and you will notice that from face on or behing the right elbow is the same in all of the swing on there no matter how they swing 1 or 2 plane.

I loved reading that book... I couldn't put it down either, and I'm not much of a reader. I built my golf swing based upon that book. It was a good starting point to understanding the golf swing. I let someone burrow it last summer, and haven't seen it since. :cheesy:

Anyways, I do remember him talking about the waggle, and setting your right elbow, but I don't have my elbow that close to my hip. It just didn't quite feel right for me and my build. I've got longer arms, so even though I keep my elbow in, it usually doesn't hit me during my swing. I'll have to go back and try it again, after I buy another copy of the book.

I don't know if this applies to your specific move, but I do remember reading that he said the moves in his waggle are different from the moves in his full swing (early vs later wrist action, etc)

I sometimes think about my right elbow hitting my hip on the way down so I guess it makes sense if it craps on the way up too.

Remember there is always a difference to what you ARE doing and what you FEEL like you're doing. Keeping your right elbow tucked against your hip on your backswing is preventing you from getting real width in the backswing and is robbing you of potential power. It's hard to say without seeing your swing but you won't find any PRO that keeps their right elbow tight against their hip on the backswing....now, conversly, you will find a few that tuck their elbow into their hip on their downswing. Put your swing on video and post it on this site...one of the Pro's on here will tell you if you're on the right track. I have a feeling that you're swing will look a lot different on video than what you think it looks like....that's pretty much the case with everybody. Good luck...and heck..if it's working for you then go with it and have fun....
