Offset and face progression

What is the difference?

Could someone please explain to me the difference between offset and face progression? Some manufacturers quote face progression in millimeters, which increases through the set, whereas others quote offset in inches, which decreases as you move up through the bag. It is making my ability to compare clubs a bit tricky! It seems that they are the inverse of each other, being measured from opposite points. If so, what is the best way to convert one to the other? Any help gratefully received.

offset is the measurement from the leading edge of the face to the leading edge of the hosel.

face progression is the measurement from the leading edge of the face to the center of the hosel bore.

since the hosel center is usually behind the leading edge, face progression will increase as you go up in loft (decreasing offset).

There are cases where the hosel center is in front of the leading edge, which would be measured as negative face progression. The same is true if the leaing edge of the hosel is behind the leading edge off the face, which is refeered to as onset. hope this helps.

Thanks - that does help......but is there a way of working out what a face progression number translates to in terms of offset? For example, a Tourstage XCB 5 iron face progression is shown as 3.75 mm. Is there a formula that can convert that to offset in inches .eg. Miz MP32 5 iron offset is 0.12 inches? Which has more offset?! Is is based on the hosel size? :cheesy:

yeah it is base on the size of the hosel. measure the diameter of the hosel, and then divide by two. subtract your face progression from this number and that gives you your offset value. ok??

here's an example:

hosel diameter = .520

face progression =.020

offset= (.520/2) .26 - .020 = .24" offset
