Torn between 2 putters....

SS (old style) Newport Beach or SS (new style) Newport 2

Time for a new putter, and Ive narrowed it down to 2 choices:

1. Newport Beach - 340g, 34" (old style w/o rivets)

or

2. Newport 2 - 350g, 33", GSS insert (new style)

I normally use a 34" putter, but I know 33" wont be a problem, so the length isn't an issue.

Can anyone give me any input or reviews of either of these putters. I'd especially be interested in hearing from someone who has used both and can compare and contrast the two.

I currently am playing a 2002 SS Newport Beach, and I love it!!

 

my only issue is the lack of sight line/dot. I know the Newport 2 has this but also has a slightly wider (front to back) head.

 

The Newport beach has a slit behind the face of the putter that gives it a nice sound.

 

Not sure if this helped, but you can't go wrong either way.

I have the Newport Beach 34" 340g and dont use it as my gamer but it is a very good putter and has great feel. I play the Prop Plat Newport 2 as my gamer and have for 4 years. I didnt particularly like the look of the New Studio Style newport 2. I looks a little chunky to me compared to the other Newport 2 models but it does have great feel. Sincve youve already been playing the Newport Beach 35" 330g it would probably make the mot sense to get the 34" 340g if you like the way it sets up that way you at least stay consistent in the look of the putter and the only thing your changing is the headweight and length.

my vote is the newport beach. i love the sound slot. it give a great feel and a great sound. i don't care for the scotty camerons with the insert. they feel too muted, both sound and feel. i use to have a 34" 340 gram, but instead took a 35" 330 gram, cut the shaft to 33" and put sugar in the shaft to bring the weight up. the 34" - 340 gram doesn't have a sight line standard, but you can always have it added.

Make it easy on yourself. Buy both putters, because you just can not own just one! Do it and enjoy!

Frankly - I like the OLDER, Studio Stainless putters WITHOUT the insert/rivets. I just feel that they are more solid, and controllable on distance. My "gamer" is a SSN2 34"/340g - As you can tell from the picture - I also have a 34"/340g Newport BEACH.

 

As others have mentioned - the BEACH does not have the sightline/dot (which can be added by Camerons' restoration studio), and that slot, which amplifies the sound, and gives you great feedback on whether your putt was solid or not. It may be psychological - but I actually like the "non beach" SSN2 better for playing, but I use the SSNBEACH for practicing, as I like the feedback it delivers.

 

Bottom line: Both are fine putters, but of your two choices, I'd go for the BEACH. BTW - that 34"/340g Beach is hard to find sometimes. My understanding is that it was made for the Japanese market, and can be hard to locate. If you find one - it is probably the best choice of your two. I love mine.

none of the beaches have a sightline/dot i do believe.
