WOW, this had to have one of the funniest lines I've ever read.

And I quote... "Many tour pros are going back to persimmon fairway woods."

I was :) when I read that.

Agreed! Don't know what rock this guy's been under for the past 15-20 years...he obviously isn't in touch with reality. Nice collection, but............maybe worth a few hundred to a "collector", but he's dreamin if he thinks anyone in their right mind is going to fork out 8 grand for this. :cheesy:

I have my grandfather's MacGregor woods (1,3 & 5) and had them appraised. They were $600 a piece and not it mint condition but have not been refinished as these have. You would be surprised what a collector will pay for solid persimmon woods. I doubt that he can get it on ebay though. Collector's normally don't buy sight unseen.

I'm not saying that his collection is worth what he is asking. But before you bust a gut you might do some research on what vintage persimmon clubs can go for especially MacGregor. Believe it or not MacGregor was once the leader in the club making industry. I'll help you out with one of many sites.

I really love the "appraised" value given in books and by collectors

My daddy always said "it's only worth what someone will pay for it" and I live by that rule.

I look forward to the day that tiger woods switches putters and the cameron craze dies off just like the IMG iron master when Jack stopped using it.

P.S.

the value of ansers has dropped recently as well, not to the floor yet, but if you dumped all you had 5-7 years ago you got a whole lot more than you will today.

I don't know where some of these figures come from, or who's fooling who, but persimmon woods are being sold all over the place for $100 and under a set. I own several sets of MacGregor persimmons, some in pretty good shape, and I paid under $100 for each set. I bought a box of a dozen Spalding Bobby Jones and Pro Model persimmons for $12. A set of Nicklaus Muirfields, woods and irons, for $150 (from a golf forum regular)...

There's one.

I also bought a near mint set of Walter Hagens for $35. From a knowledgeable collector.

I don't know what set of MacGregor woods could possibly be worth $600 each (unless they belonged to Jack Nicklaus), but someone is pulling someone's leg...

Just search "persimmon" under "Golf Clubs" on eBay. It's easy to see what they're selling for in the real world.

Table Rock couldn't even get $125 for this refinished set...

At one time these clubs were awesome sticks to have. The Mac Tourney with the keyhole insert was a prized club along with the Eye O Matics he's got for sale. I still have these along with a few Tommy Armours. Prior to metalwoods, the collectors price for these was huge because everyone liked the old oil hardened heads and believed them to be more solid and believe it or not..."hotter" then the new persimmon. There was talk about how the old persimmon had tighter wood grains which would make a more solid head. Also that the best heads were the ones that the woodgrain ran left to right.

I agree the price is not anything that would be possibly close to reasonable in today's market, but these are very fine examples of the persimmons a few of us played with unfortunately a long time ago.

The auctions you are listing here are all of clubs from the 1970's which are not solid persimmon but layers glued together and then formed into the club. The one that Table Rock has on ebay has a steel insert, not exactly vintage. I am talking about clubs that were made from 1940's to 1960's. Go back and look at the original auction that started this thread. All the clubs are between 1948 and 1960 except for his last sentece and I don't know what the heck he is talking about there. You guys are right. An apprisal is just an apprisal until someone pony's up the cash. Someone bought JFK's 3 MacGregor woods for $772,500 just because JFK owned them. Would I pay it if I had an extra seven figures burning a hole in my pocket? Nope, but I would not pay $3000 for a Scotty Cameron tour putter just because Scotty made it. A club is only worth what someone will pay for it. All I'm saying is that there is a market out there for vintage persimmon woods and it is not on ebay.

Since WHEN are drivers from the 1970s "not solid persimmon"? I have never heard this claim anywhere before, and cannot see evidence of this in ANY of the 1970s and 80s persimmons I own. I assume that either you are making this up, or you are mistakenly referring to "Laminated (usually Maple) Woods". These woods show the 'layering' on the face. Persimmon woods do not. All the links I posted were for persimmon woods.

Those refinished MacGregors ARE from the 1960s - the MT2W model were made between 1962 and 1968.

Here's a MacGregor Armour from the 1960s, which sold for a whopping $20.

There were persimmon drivers with steel inserts before 1950...

So, if there is "a market for vintage persimmon woods, and it is not ebay", what you mean is that there are people who will willingly ignore the low prices on eBay for the majority of persimmon woods so they can pay a lot more ($600?) somewhere else.
