Hawaii Golf Course Conditions & Reports

Makaha Resort Golf Couse

12/30/08

The course was in the usual good shape it's in, with the exception of some muddy, wet spots from the rain over the weekend. Except hole #7, which took significant damage when the stream nearby overflowed and ran through the green and fairway of #7. The cart path near the green is gone and now lies a trench about four feet deep full of boulders, and there's a trench from the water the demolished the green about the same size, maybe a little shallower. Boulders littered the hole. I took some pictures with my iPhone.

Other than #7 the course was fine, and pace of play was just at 4 hours despite a few rain showers.

Next two shots are what was once the green

Played Hawaii Kai Campionship Course on Saturday. :russian_roulette: For what they charge on the weekends, it should be in better shape. Besides all the bare spots and the artificial tee box on one hole, there was a sign on a fence along the road that read "No Pissing on Fence".

Hand written sign! :cheesy: Glad you posted this JT....I will NEVER play this course again unless they are paying me $55. Now I know why I've not played there since Ron Castillo was the Pro! And you're being nice about the artificial tee box. It was a g-damn piece of green outdoor carpet!!!! I couldn't even tee up my ball!

Do yourself a favor....stick to using the range out there....even if their range balls pretty much suck as well but it's pretty cheap for a bag of them!

I have to agree! I love the driving range, but I too now understand why I have not played the course in years. Never again. I am gonna take that course out of my Golf Guru! To be completely honest, I would rather play Ala Wai than Hawaii Kai! And for the same price, I could play Ala Wai about 5 times!

I feel really bad, since I am the one who got us out there in the first place! :black eye:

Keeping with the rules of this thread...

Hawaii Kai Golf Course

8:14 am

Conditions were sunny and windy, with occasional OMFG winds! I am not kidding! It blew the ball off the green, sent a cap 45 yards back down the fairway (all carry), forced us to hold onto anything that was not tied to our bodies, and brace ourselves as we were pelted with debris! Nice!

Greens were very slow and very grainy. Very undulating with almost no flat areas on any green. Basically, every putt breaks or goes up/down hill. Borderline unfair IMO.

Fairways were okay, but there were a number of old unrepaired divots that were simply left that way. Weeds were growing in the bottom of the divot, but it was still just that. A divot!

Although the rough was not that penal, it was a little long. Evidenced by the almost knee high rough that ate Pitbull's ball above a greenside bunker!

As mentioned, one tee box was in fact outdoor carpet that you could not get a tee in. Most of the other tee boxes were uneven and failed to offer any level area. We paid $55 and you can't even give me a flat area to tee up? Isn't the game hard enough already?

Pace of play was relatively slow.

Carts were old and rickety.

Staff was very nice...although they ran out of Spam Musubi and bentos way too early! :cheesy:

Royal Kunia

0945hrs starting time.

Finished in 5 hours....play..like any Sunday filled with hacks and beginners. Like I told Carl...it wouldn't have seemed so slow if we took three to six shots like the guys in front and back of us to reach our drives! Couldn't believe we were in the line of fire from front and behind! Balls were flying in our fairways like we were standing next to the pin!

Anyway....course conditions were great. Too bad they will be aerating tomorrow. On the good side..play is FREE for the next few weeks...but...you'll have a $30 cart fee. :fool:

The greens at Navy Marine Golf Course are infected by some sort of fungus. Worst greens I have ever seen, I feel bad because they are losing business because of it. I live right next door so I go there a lot still. Hopefully they can pull them back from the dead, but definitely avoid the course if you have other options. The winds here have been brutal for the last few weeks. 30 plus mph gusts and 15-20 plus sustained everyday.

Mamala Bay 7:07 teetime this past Saturday

Great weather, even though I can see the clouds coming off the mountains. It seems Hickam is the last place on the island to get rain if it does rain...(last weekend I started the front 9 with a long sleeve)..already had midday tradewinds blowing by 7am..

greens were aerated last month and greens are finally back to rolling nicely (on weekends greens are in the best shape compared to weekdays)..pace of play @ about 4 hrs 10 min. (walking). Mamala does a good job with a shotgun start and getting fast groups out early to set the pace.

Course conditions were good, the rough stays short but they will be having the tournament next month, so they'll probably start growing it out.

Mililani Golf Course

4/11/09, 12:30-ish tee time

VERY slow round, a lot of people were out in the afternoon. The sand in the bunkers are my favorite ever, you can actually get spin out of them making them very forgiving. But it's not good when the sand is the best part of the course. The greens were slow, not exactly carpet, but almost there. The fairways were hard and spotty as usual. Rough was non-existent except by the bunkers. But for $36 on the weekend, it was ok.

I heard that one of the guys mixed poison instead of fertilizer and killed parts of the greens...similar to what happened to Pearl CC the other year.

Pearl Country Club

7am Tee Time

Took just over four hours to play

Course fantastic. Putting green was actually much faster then the course greens but that's not saying the greens were bad. Very smooth and true.

***Aerating this monday.

Coral Creek. Played early bird special (30$ with cart) Course was in fair to good condition. rough was short (but wiry as always) fairways had a few wet spots, but it was just a touch soggy not standing water. The greens as previously stated in other posts were obviously aerated not long ago, but they were fairly consistent, had decent speed and rolled true-ish. Winds approx. 15 mph. Compared to other courses this time of year it is in fairly good shape. Pace of play was excellent, under 4 hours with 2 beginners and myself. Very enjoyable round of golf.

04/13/09 Heh heh heh, we must have been playing at a different Coral Creek. Almost 4 1/2 hours on a Monday afternoon with a twosome. Whew. Plus the greens are rough and not worth the money, IMO. I though I was putting a Jack Rabbit instead of a Titleist. The only reason I went to Coral Creek was because someone earlier said the greens were ok. Not.

I think anyone considering this course should wait another couple of weeks to play.

BTW, I called Royal Kunia before going to Coral Creek. They aerated on the 6th, so give them a few weeks to come back.

It was a nice day in paradise. There is always that. Aloha

Brother, you should see the greens I have been putting on. Coral Creek's greens at least have grass covering the putting surface. I have never played anything other than the early bird special at Coral Creek as it would be way too much $. Is there any place on Oahu where the greens are good right now? That dont cost more than 40$ to play?

Royal Kunia

Free Golf...just pay the cart fee...it was $25 :fool:

The course was wide open. The round took just over 3hours.

Anyway..like I said earlier..they aerated on Monday....the greens weren't terribly bad..they used the smaller grain of sand to fill the holes up. BUT..still putting was hell. I think I needed another 30 grams on my putter to make the ball reach the hole. After we started just taking automatic 2 putts...then it wasn't so painful.

I wondered what you were comparing it to. This explains it. :=)

Now that's how I think it should be. Why is it golf courses charge full price when they are putting out an inferior product? Who else does that? If your greens are aerated the price should be less than full price. Duh!

New Ewa Beach Golf Club

Cost- $45 with coupon from that Hawaii Golf Paper found in golf shops/pro shops

Per the woman at check in..if you're on the email list you'll get coupons for cheaper play. She said the last email was $40. We all signed up for the email list.

Course Conditions- Freeking Nice...green were plush...grainy but plush. Probably the nicest seen in a while. The trees are finally growing out. It's been a while since I've last been here and I used to get bored because every hole looked the same. Now with the trees growing bigger, the holes actually look a bit different and they play a bit more tougher

Rough...Rough...that paspalum (I think) grabs the hell out of your clubs. Unfortunately for me...playing safe on a few holes got me in the rough. Should have stuck with driver!

Aerating schedule..NOT Here. Per the sign posted .."Our greenskeeper said the greens are pristine and don't need aerating." They are correct on that.

Check it out...definitely recommend the place at it's current conditions.

Whoa! Playing that early how could you tell how the greens were. You'd need a pillow and blanket. (cool)
