Here is a way to change the finish on your scotty cameron 303 stainless. I recently went to wal mart and tried
" the works" on my scotty cameron because i wanted something different than the 3x finish and didnt want to spend 95 to have a black finish on it when I really wanted black pearl. Cant find no one for that. Anyways, get a small plastic container that will hold enough solution to cover the whole putter. Let the putter sit in the solutiion for 2-3 days. In that time your putter will just like the oil can finish if not better! I wouldnt try this on the gun blue models because i havent tried this. The acid in the solution doesnt harm or pit the putter in any way just turn the putter into an oil can finish but with out the glare. I know it sounds weary but I will post pics shortly, putter is still in the solution. :drinks:

I've been trying to find it, but can't. My guess is that it is some sort of acidic cleaner.

 

My wife said that it is some sort of general cleaning product. She is picking some up today and I will let you know what is in it.

It has a dilute acid in it. It's great for toilets and other areas that have hard water deposits. Those types of cleaners either have about 10% Hydrochloric acid, Phosporic acid or oxalic acid in it. Kaboom has what they call organic salts, which are simply Chloride (Cl) or Potassium (K) molecules attached to Sodium (Na) instead of Hydrogen (H). (KCl is Potassium Chloride, NaCl is salt, and HCl is Hydrochloric Acid.) All three do different things. Hydrochloric acid is pretty caustic, and will etch metal, dont use that. Phosporic acid and oxalic acid if left too long will etch the metal as well. Etching creates a slight surface profile that will enable paint to adhere. (I have my own painting company). The bathroom cleaner types generally have more dilute ingredients than the toilet bowl cleaners because skin contact is much more common with bathroom cleaners. CLR, Kaboom, The Works, etc all have both bathroom and toilet cleaners.

 

I actually used Kaboom (from Oxi Clean infomercial fame). I used it on my 588 RTG's and left them in for about 15 minutes apiece. It turned them greenish (whoops!!). The green patina is from the chemical in the cleaner reacting with both the metal and air. It's very similar to a slightly green copper gutter or flashing on a building. Anyway, the green went away and a really dull grippy metal stayed. So you know what i did? I went out and bought CG10 satins anyway. Whatever.

I have been experimenting today with "The Works" drain cleaner. I put a TM Rossa Tour in it, the putter was beat up and I wanted to try that before using a SC. I also put a cleveland raw wedge in just briefly.

 

1. All of the black finish came off the Rossa immediately. Looks like raw steel now. Left in too long and hurt the finish of the red insert.

 

2. The wedge just cleaned up completely, all rust removed. Did not leave in longer to see if it will oxidize.

 

3. Bit the bullet and put the Scotty in. So far it has just darkened a couple of shades.

 

Do this in a ventilated area.

I dont know about anyone else, but I really enjoy all this do it yourself home club customization stuff. I think I am going to try this on my putter!

I am waiting for my camera to recharge to post pics and for oxidation extremely fast here goes: I did this to my Mizuno mp t raw haze. Boil water with a decent size pot with a wide top. When the water comes to a boil add salt into the water and let the heads over hang just above the boiling water so the steam hits the heads and dip the heads in occasionally in minutes the wedge will rust with good uniform. As far as the putter goes the works doesnt harm the 303 I cannot conform with other cameron heads because I dont have any than this 303. The putter will turn a brown color and the paintfill will no come off. depending on the darker look you want leave the putter in longer the darker you want. I will post pics as soon as camera is ready.

Actually I think it looks pretty good considering it's an indoor photo taken with flash. I can tell from the hosel how dark the putter actually came. jva...maybe you could take some outdoor photos of it in natural light to give us a better view. :D

I doesn't damage the paintfill? Did you guys remove the shaft or does it have no effect on the shaft?

 

That Scotty looks great. I would like to see some picks of some wedges.

I am a big tweaker now, thanks golfwrx! Here's my gift to golfwrx. You can buy the works in WAL MART cleaner section, and its only $1.39 -1.92 for the whole bottle! I must caution users that the shaft will turn brown too but I think if you tape up the shaft good it should be fine and enjoy your browned oil can finish look for a buckl! Screw 100+ I dont like scotty as a person based the way he preserves his integerity of the putters, who cares how it looks, if it dont feel good or dont perform its junk, even if it's pretty! I will really try to find some one who can do the black pearl finish or find a new trick. I will keep golfwrx updated. Im sorry i got off topic and about the finish if you dont like it, it will come off with a scotch pad. The finish will turn into a satin type finish. Also gun blue will change your scotty too, even on stainless. raw wedges will turn a light brown but will not hold up well against balls but the putter seems to be holding up very well.

If you put Vasaline on the shaft it should protect it. Funny but true.

I bought some for a dollar at wal mart today to mess around with.

 

I didnt realize that it foams up.

 

And make sure you use it in a very well ventilated area. This stuff smells horrible.

 

I am useing it on a old zinc iron to see how it will effect that material since my putter is zinc. I also put in a stainless steel ball mark repair tool for the fun of it ;)

 

I will let you know how it all turns out.

It ate off the finish, then it started eating the club. Thats why it foamed up. :D

 

So dont use it on zinc, but the stainless steel is still soaking.

I just took mine out of the stuff. It was in there since TUesday. I think it came out well except it turned it a smokey flat black rather than oil can brown. Also, it completely ate off all the paintfill and the sole came out pretty light.

Is there a reason the putter will come out a smokey black rather than an oil can? If so you can be done to prevent this, or change this?
