Oil can finish on 303 stainless!

Actually, since being out of the stuff for a few days it has turned more like oil can, just not shiny like the oil can on many 009's. I'll post new pics as soon as my paintfill is done.

I am no expert but it would probably become shinnier if you buffed it with a dremel or grinding wheel and buffing pad.

So far my putter has been soaking for roughly 12 hours and has started to turn dark grey. The putter I'm doing this to is my gamer, a Cleveland "Designed By." It looks pretty cool so far. I plan on leaving it in "The Works" until Monday.

When I traded mine to a local shop I went back to see they had taken the finish off somehow. It just looked a little brown in the cavity

I put this Cameron Studio Design 1 in a different brand of toilet bowl cleaner (Lysol, I think) for about 2 hours. The black finish was like new when I put it in, and it was gone in no time. I rinsed the head right after I took it out to stop the corrosion, and then I used Flitz metal polish on the head a few times. I've played the putter for several rounds now with no rust. Its color is the same as a Studio Stainless.

Lesson of the day: Dont use the works on Zinc!

 

 

It ate off the finish, then it started eating the club. Thats why it foamed up. ;)

 

So dont use it on zinc, but the stainless steel is still soaking.

 

Hahah....looks like my old Wison putter is zinc! It's foaming and actually smoking! It's been in for like 10 minutes now, I'm gonna take it out in a minute. Let us know how it works with Stainless, if it turns out well I might but a cheap stainless putter on ebay to try it!

 

I will say that the dull gray Wilson is now smoky black. Looks kinda cool. I post a pic when I take it out in 10 mins.

The finish on a ping g2 is hard to change,I have tried (could not find the works or lysol)

-drano

-orange power

-oxalic acid (used to clean outdoor timber before staining)

-blow tourch to oxides colour the surface.

 

It appears that our cleaners are less toxic.

 

maybe I will have to strip the surface finish by hand first

I decided to try this on my vokey oil can. It was raw already. First i took all the previous rust off. being an idiot i did not clean it properly and i think that is why it came out slightly inconsistent. I diluted the solution to about 40% works 60% water and let it soak for 12 hours. It is very dull, so i am going to try and soak it for longer then polish it a little. I will post more pics when that is done.

You know, I'm starting to think this isn't the way to go, because there's a lot of people out there who've claimed to have tried this on their putters, but none of them want to show pictures of the result!

So, I bought an oil can newport (art of putting) off ebay a while back. It was really cheap because the previous owner had put kind of a pro platinum finish on it and added his initials to the toe AND decided to imprint the word "Tour" under the newport (I assume in hopes of making it look like a tour cameron). Anyway, after seeing this discussion, I decided to put it in the works. I figured I'd never use it anyway, couldn't have it refinished by cameron b/c of the aforementioned 'tour' marking, and wanted to see what the works did to it. Anyway, I'll try to post pictures soon, but more than anything, it really just looks like a raw finish. In the meantime, any suggestions as to what I can do with it since I can't refinish it with the studio? Thanks.

You can get it refinished by Black Oxide Services, Tom Slighter, or Kevin Colbert at putterplating.com. Assuming you have dings that need to be cleaned up I would recommend putterplating or Slighter, because I don't think BOS does restoration work, just refinishing.

 

With a carbon steel head you can get pretty much any finish you want like Pro Platinum, oil can, or one of the black oxide type finishes.

The Works and other household cleaners are not going to strip the nickel off a nickel-based plating such as pro platinum. Have it stripped by the pros then refinished or leave it with the "raw look".

I did the same steps as you and my scotty cameron turned an oil can color. The problem is it did not stay on. I touched it and the finish came right off. Was I supposed to rinse it off with water or let it air dry? Anybody know what to do? Thanks can't wait to hear.

just so you know if you have a 303 stainless putter, you cant put any real finish on it AT ALL. you can sandblast it or chrome plate it but thats really it. carbon steel you can oil can, but never stainless, try it and you will be dissapointed you just ruined a nice putter.

Wow i wouldve never thought this thread would be still active. I am jva and havent been able to remember my old password or email address from that time. If i remember correctly i used a plastic 5 gallon bucket to soak my putter. I dont remember exactly how long but definitely over night. I dried the putter, torched it with a propane torch and then dipped the putter into oil... I only thought to do this because i thought the metal would absorb the oil and color.

id imagine it would. Try tourching the putterhead first and dip in the oil first. I dont have any idea how the works and carbon steel will react.
