haha...yeah, the only thing they didn't have a GT at the time was the new Taylormade Irons as well as any Tour Edge gear. It wasn't a waste of time for me...I got a free Tee-Off guide and while I was buying tickets, I got handed a free one from a vendor. Winning ;-)
I just got hired at GT. We got both the new and scratch iron line up last week. Well worth coming to check out!

I'm coming back to the game this year, after 15 yrs of not playing much. I'll be rebuilding my game, used to play to a 10 a long time ago but expect to be scoring 90's as I start out the year. Live in the west end, close to The Ranch & Lewis Estates, will probably play there some and spend lots of time on their ranges. Have clubs will travel, hit me up if you want a partner for a round.*

*This assumes our freaking snow ever goes away. Still have almost 3' in the 'shovel piles' in my front yard. I imagine open areas should be clear tomorrow or Thursday, I'll be trying to get to a driving range over the weekend.

Any recommendations for practice facilities? I prefer somewhere I can hit off the grass.

I was at Red Tail last year but have moved downtown and the drive is longer now than I can see myself doing on a regular basis.

Closest courses to downtown are Victoria and Riverside, Victoria is all mats and Riverside doesn't have a practice facility at all. Unless you bought into the Highlands or Mayfair which are both not far from downtown.

Thanks, I realize now my post wasn't clear. I had a range pass at Red Tail last year. I'm looking to purchase a pass again to practice somewhere throughout the season. I am wondering if there is anywhere closer to downtown that will go to grass when the ground allows it. Victoria is the closest option for me, but thats mats only as far as I know.

Your kind of stuck ... very few options dowtown ... southside may be your best bet ... Red Tail is much better than Coloniale, most of the others are matt's only. Perhaps someone else has another suggestion.

Chukman I'm not from Alberta but I am going out there to work this summer.

working at Kananaskis.

can't wait...if you can offer any tips, thoughts or feelings on the course and area I'd greatly appreciate it.

Lucky man Chukman (or is that Luckman). You are going to love both courses, Kidd seems to be everyone's favourite, but I'm a big Lorrette fan. Plenty to play without going too far if you need a change. Amazing place some days as you will play 4 seasons of weather during one round.

Jaeger Ridge has a very nice practice facility (on the members end) and is grass.

Should be closer than Redtail, but still pretty far from downtown.

As posted, for a grass range near downtown, your options are very limited....as in pretty much none for a simple range pass.

Not many choices for grass ranges that I'm aware of other than Private courses, Redtail Landing, Jagare Ridge, and Bogey Busters range on Ellerslie road.

Bogey Busters doesn't always allow hitting off grass. Infact last year they rarely seemed to let people hit off the huge grass area.

Jagare has grass but it's a very small range. And doesn't have the extra areas Redtail does.

I would stick with Redtail for practise ranges available to the public.

I played Redtail on Friday.

It was in quite good shape for the time of year. Still some holes with standing water on the fairways, and a couple bunkers with the same. But the greens were in good shape, all be it slow and a bit hoppy, probably due to them getting the greens prep'd for the year.

Yeah, I managed to get out for 9 holes on Sunday night. Great weather and no one on the course. Spot on about the conditions.

Range was mats.

playable, but greens were like velcro...I realize it's early, but they must've stimped at 4.

However from what I saw, they should have a great year conditions wise.

Ahh Redtail and the good old wind. Yesterday it was blowing about 40-50km/h from the South East. I hit a downwind drive 380 yards on 11 :bb: . Then on 14 I hit a drive that went a whopping 200 yards into the wind. I think it was starting to come back at me at one point :vava: .

It was about a 3 club wind. Still better than being at work! Good times

played cougar and they seemed to be similar to their yearly conditions...greens were a little bumpy but that was earlier in the season, fairways were generally in good shape with some brown spots here and there, but overall pretty good condition IMO

Played there twice now, the second time about 2 weeks ago. The greens were a good speed and rolling nicely, also were holding well. Not having seen the golf course in years past I can't comment on how it is by comparison, but it seemed to be in great shape. Definitely worse a trip out there.

Played in a tourney at Wolf Creek (Old Course) on Saturday and Sunday ... great shape & very challenging or difficult depending how you look at it.

With all the rain over the past few weeks the course is high & dry and very few mosquitoes.

Put it on your list.
