PGA Tour Tournament Shaft Count Wins

Has anyone noticed that if you go to any of the major shaft manufactuerers web sites they all mention that they won the shaft count at the same tournaments? For example

 

"In fact, according to the company that measures shaft usage on tour, the Darrell Survey, Fujikura had over twice the number of driver shafts in play this week than the second place finisher."

 

"Darrell Survey - today announces that its YS-7 shaft was the No. 1 played wood shaft model among professionals at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. "

 

Aldila got the win with Aaron using their shafts.

 

I realize that one says #1 Driver shaft and the other says #1 Wood Shaft and that they are both correct. It just looks funny to me to go to the web site and see them both say We won! :-)

That's one of the statistical tricks that most of the OEMs play with Darrell Survey data to try to make defensible claims to being number one at something. Shafts in all woods, shafts in play (so you get three players to use a graphite ###Brand iron shaft and that counts for "24" additional shafts in play...). There are lots of ways to work the data.

 

The main thing you can draw from Darrell Survey data is that there are a handful of players that were using the 757 a couple of years ago, but the YS 6 always had 8 or so at a tour event, and that was enough to make number on for Drivers. Now, there is such an incredible variety of shafts available, many as prototypes, that no one model of shaft ever seems to have more than 6 or 7 players in a field of 150.

Find a local pro that subscribes to their service. Sometimes manufacturers will summarize some of the data for internal or external PR purposes, like this summary from Graphite Design
