Payne's Bag?

I remember reading somewhere that he was playing some Mizzy irons and Orlimar Fws that he bought at an Edwin Watts. I know he played a Killer Whale for awhile. And he was a fan of the Aldila HM-40 shaft in his driver.

I did a big report on him back a few years ago, I dont know if that was the right time frame, but i KNOW he played the Precepts irons for a while. But he had a large slump with them and he finally got things in a groove after a few months. The Precepts spun the ball like crazy for him and his distances were off anywhere from 6-11 yards per club.

mizuno pro ms-4 blades 2-PW is what he used to win the open.

A bit pedantic, but I think the pitching wedge was an MP14 from an old set he played previously that year. ;)

Dude just noticed your bag contents. Have you changed from X100s to Sanviks recently? Are they the same as teh ones you used to get in Tmade tour Pref Burner Drivers and fiarways? Think Lynx offered them in their Lynx USA irons one year as an opptional extra of twice the price of the irons?

I have looked and can not find a thing...Does anyone know what Payne Stewart had in his bag at the US Open in 1999 and at the Ryder Cup?

Thanks, T

...and just before Payne's death:

http://www.golftoday.co.uk/news/yeartodate/news99/lynx.html

Lynx cancel Stewart line of clubs

Lynx Golf said today it will cancel production of the forged irons that Payne Stewart helped design and had planned to play in 2000.

Stewart, who died Oct. 25 in a plane crash, had signed a three-year endorsement contract with Golfsmith International, the parent company of Lynx. He carried the Lynx bag when he won the U.S. Open and was to play its clubs next year.

Stewart first used the new forged irons, which he designed with Golfsmith chief technical officer Tom Wishon, during the Dunhill Cup at St. Andrews two weeks before his death.

"Out of respect to Payne, to his memory and to his family, Golfsmith has made the decision to cancel the development of these irons, as well as other Lynx golf club projects for Payne which were in process at the time of his death," said Carl Paul, president and CEO of Golfsmith.

Paul said the irons that Stewart used in the Dunhill Cup will be kept at company headquarters, while a duplicate set will be presented to Stewart's family.

Since the original links on this topic aren't working, here's a current one that does:

https://www.golfchannel.com/article/golf-channel-digital/whats-bag-payne-stewart

1999 U.S. Open - Payne Stewart

Driver: Titleist Titanium 975D 9.5
3 Wood: Orlimar Tri-Metal 13
Irons (2-9): Mizuno MS 4
Wedges: Mizuno MP14 (PW) Cleveland 588 (SW) Ping Zing 2 (LW)
Putter: See More
Ball: Titleist Tour Prestige 90

As explained in the post above, only the from LYNX was the bag.

Tom Wishon used to post here quite frequently  (unfortunately, some members foolishly argued with him regarding clubmaking and designs).   Tom designed the last irons played by Payne before his death.  He would know with certainty what was in that bag.

Tom talks about the design process for these irons in his The Search for the Perfect Golf Club book. Worth a read.

Yep.  I have the original and the updated version.  At the moment, I don't recall if this was the story about the offset  (Payne wanted offset but didn't want to see it in the clubs) or about when Ben Crenshaw stopped by and kept commenting on the new irons Tom was working on for Payne. Tom told Crenshaw he could hit anything he (Wishon) was working on for Payne.  Crenshaw then made his own club choice based on that.

It was embarrassing that posters on here would argue (they literally said Tom was wrong) with Tom about clubmaking, the limitations of adjustable hosel clubs, etc.

I've had the book for a few years now. The part about the offset was definitely in there, but I don't recall any mention of Crenshaw. Will need to have another read, any excuse haha
