Need Help Deciding What Courses to Play

Preduck

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I'm planning on going to Oahu the first week in Feburary. I have a few courses I think I'd like to play. I was thinking about playing in no order

Ko'Olina

Kaluakoi Klipper

Koo'Lau

I was thinking about maybe trying to do Turtle Bay or Royal Kunia based on some of the stuff I've read. Any other courses to consider?

I was thinking about trying to do some twlight rates if possible to save some cash. I know that Kaluakoi is a military course. Is it public? Can I get on? It's going to be -35 with the windchill tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to swinging some clubs. Thanks for your help guys!

I think you mean Kaneohe Klipper, as Kaluakoi is on a different island. Klipper is located on a military base and requires a valid military ID. They do have a program to allow civilian play. However, they do NOT sponsor random players to allow access to the base. You must be military, be sponsored on base by someone in the military, or be a member of the Friends of the Klipper organization. Joining the Friends of the Klipper requires submitting a formal application for back ground check and approval. It takes months and sometimes does not happen at all. I am not sure if they allow membership to non-residents (they require a physical address for application).

As for the others, they are all very nice courses and I don't think you would be disappointed with either of them. Ko'Olina is one of my favorite courses. Koolau is very scenic, but challenging. Royal Kunia is a very nice course that I play regularly. Turtle Bay is a scenic drive and the Palmer Course is right along the ocean. Another challenging course (especially if the wind is up), but very good.

Have fun!

I played Ko olau last week and it was really REALLY soggy. It is a visually stunning course though, up in the mountains (my favorite really.) The other courses you mentioned are very good. Coral Creek is another decent course out here that you may want to consider. My schedule for that week is dicey or I would get you on at Kaneohe. Have fun!

As a tourist, I was glad I played the palmer course at Turtle Bay but I also played Royal Kunia and if I lived out there, I wouldn't have a problem playing Royal Kunia instead of Turtle Bay.....but, if you do go to turtle bay, make sure drive over to Romy's for shrimp....very interesting and enjoyable experience.

Also (and again as a tourist), I am so glad that I played Koolau. Course was so-so as far as condition but the views and location were amazing. Plus, I was a little worried about it being so difficult.....but, if you don't have a 100 yard slice or hit grounders off the tee (and play within yourself), it really isn't that bad. Even rainy or soggy, I bet you're glad you went there.

Thanks, Yes I did mean Kaneohe. I'm almost definitely playing Koo'Lau based on all the comments about it. Turtle Bay (Palmer) and Ko'Olina are looking to be the other favorites. I guess I still have a couple of weeks to decide. Definitely trying to get the Hawaii golf experience. Are there ways to try to get Twilight rates online? How far out should I try to get a tee time? I'm going to be playing as a single so I would think it wouldn't be tough to get on. Are the courses significantly busier for the pro bowl? I'll be there the week before the game.

Thanks so much for your help!

Honestly, I don't know anything about twilight rates or discounts online. I would not imagine that the courses would be all that busy, with the exception of Ko'Olina, as there are players and families as well as vistors staying there for the Pro Bowl. Some may be here early and play, but even then, I cannot imagine you would have all that much trouble as a single.

I think the only course I would see a signifigant discount with is Koo'lau. The others don't really matter too much when I play pricewise. I think I might try to do Ko'Olina early in the week in case it does get busy later on. I've been to Oahu once before, but I didn't bring my clubs and I've kicked myself since. Is there some hidden gems golf or non-golf, that I should check out? Mahalo!

Hmmm. I would probably suggest looking through some of the old threads that are in the Hawaii room for stuff other visitors have shared and enjoyed. You can also look through the Local Kine Grindz page for some local comfort food. There are a bunch of "hole in the wall" places listed in their. I think you are off to a pretty good start. I think the drive through the rustic North Shore area on your way to Turtle Bay has a lot of great scenery. Hopefully the waves are up and you will get to see the pro surfers and beach babes doing their thing. I apologize, but I live here, so I tend to take a lot of the little stuff for granted, since it is there all the time. I live across the highway from the water and I rarely go down there. I hope you enjoy your visit. :drinks:

All good info above....one reminder though...Koolau always has a high possibility of being soggy due to it's location at the foot of the Koolau mountain range. I myself only try to play there during the middle of summer to avoid the cart paths only and soggy/muddy conditions.

For me if I was to host someone, I'd choose, Ko'Olina, Turtle Bay, Royal Kunia..in that order.

Believe them when they say that :D ... I was golfing with a couple of the Hawaii guys on the one day and while waiting on the tee box one of them said - "this is a nice course but it doesn't really have the scenery"...so, I said - "what about those mountains, those buildings, the palm trees, the landscaping...etc."...and I think his answer was - "it is just a mountain". So, lesson learned = if they say the scenery is good, it will be amazing....and if they say it is so-so, it will still be pretty darn good.

I know that my first recommendation as a tourist (unless they really want to play the courses that the pros play - turtle bay, Ko'Olina, etc.) is Koolau.....BUT, I also played 3 nice courses before that (RK, HCC, and Ko'Olina...and was playing turtle bay the next day) and it was relatively dry the day I went.... so I guess what I'm saying is that if I only played Koolau and it was wet, soggy, rainy, etc.....I probably would have been disappointed with my choice.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well it's crunch time for me. I haven't booked any tee times since I don't know when I'll have a car available for me. I'm hoping it won't be a problem to call the day before to try to snag a tee time during an afternoon. I just started to pack up my clubs.......Getting pretty excited!!! Thanks again for everyone's help!
