biggest OEM golf club "flops"

"The Chipper" no matter the OEM, if you make it, it is a flop.

I'm not joking when I say this, you have no idea how wrong you are, you'd never guess but chippers sell like crazy.

Sadly I know and without sounding prejudice or ignorant, look at the skill level directly related to the consumers who are purchasing them. You cannot call golfers who bag a chipper skillfull!

Learn to use a wedge even if it is a Texas Wedge (yo putta)!

I completely agree with you, my comment about chippers is always "You already have a chipper in your bag, its called a 7 iron."

Ping Si 3 driver what a flop!!!

Good one. I had the misfortune of playing that driver briefly. By far the biggest equipment snafu that I have personally made. I'm the only one that I know of that ever bought one. A G2 was quickly purchase soon thereafter and in the bag for a number of years.

May not be a bigger than the Callaway C4, but a flop none the less. At that level of bad clubs, we may be splitting hairs.

Big agreement on the Callaway C4. It was the first club I thought of too!

I agree. Add the ERC II and the ERC Fusion Driver too.

Might as well jump in...

Again based on sales and hype...not performance

the conehead drivers - R7 CGB max

Wilson spine...never even saw one in person before

907 D1.....conehead's cousin

Adams DIXX blu putter

Future flops:

Adams puglielli wedge with the yellow/black thing sticking out.

Wilson smooth...design just doesn't look innovative or clean either

Wilson Di9...the chubby shafts

Threadjack, maybe but would like to see what people think (kinda relative)

Surprises (opposite)

9015D driver...never would have guessed

CG14...many people hated the insert, turns out they rock too

V2 shafts...never considered UST until these came along

TM rossa putters did well also...and most surprisingly...the spider

2 that came to mind very quickly were the TOMMY ARMOUR T100 titanium irons they were massive and also the ZEVO line. and most of NIKEs PUTTERS

+1 on those jinormous irons where the CoG was miles above the top of the golf ball.

Anybody remember the funky shape of Wilson "Invex" ( sp?) woods?

I actually liked the appearance of the C4 but I never hit one.

How about that Palmer "Gripless" driver....anyone remember that thing? What was the rumor...Tiger hit is 70 yards past his gamer, or am I the only one who heard that?

Who's got a pic of it??

strangely enough i was thinking about this club the other day...had a red shaft if i remember correctly? i never gave it a whirl though, as my terribly sweaty hands would pose a serious health hazard to anyone in the immediate area of my swing.

That's because you didn't stump up for the special glove with the black-coloured palm/thumb bits, no doubt... ;)

I actually saw Woods having a go with Butch Harmon's club on the practice ground at Troon one year. He did indeed hit it miles (albeit not 70 yards further) but it also went all over the place. Like the rest of the Palmer/Peerless stuff, the only people who bought it were presumably doing it for a bet - but they made a bit of dosh by selling the idea for the silly hosel design to Cobra.

The Callaway FTI they are like $70 on ebay with an original retail price of $500, ....

The FT-i has sold fairly well in my area. I've seen many of them on the courses in my area since they were intoduced. However the cheap prices they are bringing now are due to its replacement, the FT-iq, is already on the market.

I-mix has been a sales flop so far due to its "newness". The price seems quite high until you realize that the separate head and an entry priced shaft (which is basically also in the "off the shelf" epoxied model) totaled up the same as an epoxied model. More expensive I-mix shafts are about the same cost of ordering an installed upgraded shaft from the factory in the FT-5. When the FT-9 I-mix head hits the market I can still use my collection of I-mix shafts with it, reducing the cost of buying an epoxied FT-9. If Callaway plans on using I-mix as the future of their premium driver line-up, then investing in an I-mix driver now is a good idea IMHO.

Complete +1

The new pricing on I-Mix is identical to epoxy. If want to, a REAL Fubuki will be $129 next month, I have 2 Diamana, 2 DVS, a Speeder and MOI. Can't wait for new heads, shafts are cheap now this time of year, paid less than $140 for Blueboard...when iQ I-Mix is out trading in the LCG I have...thinking about FT9 as well.

I have read 50+ good reviews on the TI100, what's so bad about them.

FWIW I have never actually seen one

go back up to post #44 for a photo of the TA Ti 100.

I hope you a joking about the numerous positive reviews.

i seem to recall that that particular iron was so bad that the company went into chapter 11 ( again) because of it.

Since the obvious have been stated, I'll throw in the TM Bubble Shaft. Yeah, it's not a "club" but the shaft does attach the "club"head! :D

I don't understand this one. The bubble was super hot for years! I hate that we need to find grips for them every so often though...

Kevin

Agreed, those things were everywhere for about 5 years, I personally owned the SS headed driver, 3w, 5w, then moved to the titanium driver. Great clubs for their day, I am also pretty sure Taylor Made would say their run with them was a huge success.

The PING ZING 2 irons, while excellent clubs on paper, nearly put PING under.

I actually think it was the original Zing that was a flop, it was the much anticipated replacement for the legendary Eye2 line. There were many problems with the club, then they rushed the Zing 2 to market. While it was never a great seller I think it was a steady performer until it was replaced by the ISI series. Easy clubs to hit, but they made the original Eye2's look classic in apperance.

OMG I had one of those!, I had forgotten all about it, what a horrific club, the feel was aweful, and I could barely get the ball in the air wiht the thing. I think it stayed in my bag one round. The only reason I bought it was I found it used at a good price, that club is a classic example of a gimic that did not perform.

Others, the Tommy armour titanium irons, bad design, the Wilson Invex, Daly won the Open at St Andrews with them and they still couldnt sell them, C4, Detour, and do people really buy Wilson Fat Shaft irons? I see them in pro shops but never in peoples bags.

Never seen one up against a ball or next to another club to judge the size.

Several posts here have railed against chippers. I play a Cleveland Niblick proudly. It's a great club, more versatile than the 7-iron for chipping, and I cannot understand the snobbery of those posters who claim these clubs to be "flops." You're making yourselves sound like only the clubs you play matter. There is only one # that counts in golf, and that's the final # on the scorecard. Whether a chipper or 7-iron was used, it doesn't matter in the final tally.

By the way, most people who rail against chippers, based on direct experience with them over many rounds, are playing clubs that are for way more advanced golfers. We're laughing at you.

I am guessing this never made it to the US, but there was a range in the UK called JORDAN, the key element was their Thermoplastic gas injected shaft. Problem was they had the titanium insert in a steel head. We stocked them, and the first few we sold all came back as the seal wasn't (well) sealed!!!

Monumental f*ck up...
