Mental game

Playing some good golf at the mo swings good short game and putting too. But mental game is weak for example stood on 1st tee today in monthly medal (dog leg left over bunker links course, princes sandwhich kent ) the line is left edge of bunker . i had said to myself dont go left ! guess what ? walked off with a 7 followed that with bogey,bogey cut long storie short 5 over after 3 finished front 9, 4 over any how get it going on back 9 -2 under walking upto 9th tee and said to myself i make bogey , split the fairway hit a wedge short chipped up to 3 ft and missed BOGEY ! my last few rounds the only reason i droped shots is because i called them ! any how i play off 3 should get cut for today . i have drills for my golf swing but nothing for my mental game , could any one help or point me in the right direction of a good book or audio .

Check out a book called 'The Inner Game of Golf' you can get if from amazon fairly cheap.... GREAT read. My brothers boss turned me on to this book, i really haven't been able to read the whole thing yet. He told me that it really tuned his mental game and thus his playing game around, last year he dropped from a 13 to a 7 hcp and he said that he didnt do anything different that he can tell.

"Don't go left"

 

According to mental gurus our subconscious only hears "left", not don't, and programs you more likely to go left.

 

Best to pick your specific target and concentrate on it only.

 

I second Rotella's 15th club, as well as Golf is Not a Game of Perfect.

You need to a flawless pre shot routine. I like to come up with a trigger to start mine by taping my club on the ground or pulling my glove, anything to start your process to your routine. Once it's interrupted you start over and go through your check points again. I can't step into my shot unless I'm focused 100%.

 

Once I walk into the shot I try and focus on a spot 3 feet in front of my ball and concentrate trying to align myself up correctly and one last look at the target and go. No time for bad thoughts.

 

Clean up you pre shot routine. Maybe have somebody time it, so you can get it all down to the second. I always look back at Karl Malone in basketball, he had the best free throw routine, it always took 11 seconds.

If I know there is trouble on left side then I will be likely to tee the ball as far left in the box as I can... Its a sub-conscience fix...

i do that too. it seems to change the perspective of the hole, and gets you're head past the danger and on to the target.

Carey Mumford is a member here and has a book available for download "The Double Connexion" (the hard copy is out of print). I think his online name is xxxxxxx. I have been meaning to get it but haven't coughed up the cash yet. The material on the site makes a lot of sense and I still count myself as a future customer.
