Should your wedges be bent the same as your irons?

Hello All,

This is kind of a silly question.. but here it goes. My irons are bent 1 degree upright, but I havent had my wedges bent. Should my wedges also be bent to 1 degree upright? How much difference would this make if I had them bent to match my irons?

You should go get fit with a lie board. Even if you don't need your wedges bent, they are sometimes off from the factory. I would also get them to fit me with impact tape. With both methods, you should get real close. Make sure you wear your golf shoes to get fitted. You can throw off the measurement a bit if not.

I have my wedges set to the same lie angle as my pitching wedge per my clubfitter. Get them checked anyway. They can be off from the factory even. 1º upright in one manufacturer might be standard to another manufacturer too. Know what actual lie angles you need, rather than "1º upright."

Fitting your wedges is even more important. The shorter the iron, the more effect the lie angle has on the ball flight. That's one reason why many people don't worry as much about woods since the effect is much less. To do it right you really need to be dynamically fitted on a lie board for each club. It's the only way to ensure accuracy. I would definately recommend you get your wedges dynamically fitted.

Your wedges should be bent 3-6 degrees flatter than your irons, so between 2 and 5 degrees flat. This is one of the greatest factors for versatility on wedge shots and helps even more than grinds for opening the face up on floppers. Don't think I'm crazy, ask around, especially wih tour reps.

 

 

Definetly at least 2* flat, but I wouldnt go any further than 4. dk is absolutely right about versatility, the flatter lie will give you as much heel relief as a grind for finesse shots, and you will clip your full shots cleaner too.

Here's my irons set-up

3-6 3* upright

7-9 2* upright

47* 1* upright

51* 1* upright

57* 1* flat

These lie angles were determined by me, watching ballflight for 20 years and knowing how I like my wedges to play.
