Putter Fitting?

Is this something that an average pro shop should be able to do? I was "fit" for a putter a few years ago (Ping Zing 2, I love the head) where it was cut down from 33" to 31." Much better length, but the lie angle's killin' me. I grabbed the last of that model putter that the golf store had. Not the best idea. I asked the person working that day if they did putter fitting. They "did" but the guy that "knew" how to do it wasn't working that day (and I just couldn't walk out without ordering the damn thing ;) ). Do most courses' pro shops have good fitting programs for putters as with the irons and woods?

Golfsmith specializes in club repair and fitting. Send it to them, or go to your local golfsmith for a fit. If by "pro shop" you mean those actalluy on the golf course, those are getting very rare. Ther're not many clubmakers left on golf courses just because it's an extra hand held out for cash. Some Off-course shops have club fitting, but the easiest thing to do is send it to golfsmith.

I may give them a call later this week and see what they can do, and for how much... I really like a straight back and straight through putting stroke for pace and feel, but this flat lie angle is really making it a pain and killing my tempo...

i could give you a long detailed answer or a short answer...so i will give you something in between. where are you located? how much $ are you willing to spend? what is your putting game like? answer that and i will send you some answers.

If you like a straight back and straight through stroke the Ping Zing isn't for you, because its a toe hang putter (if you balance the putter on your finger with the putter horizontal the toe will hang towards the ground). Go with a face balance putter with your preferred type of stroke, do the same test and the putter face will "face" the upward. Hope this helps.

Hmmm... no WONDER that style of stroke worked better with my old Odyssey mallet... you might have just save me some money, LOL... I CANNOT believe I didn't even consider that...

The short answer...........NO.

 

My LONG answer............One of the best things I've done at a local launch monitor facility was the Putter fitting. Oddly - it reflected much better skid/roll/line figures with one of my putters, which was identical in specifications (loft/lie) to my other putter. They made some minor adjustments in my stance and setup, and I did seem to putt much more comfortably after that. I would highly recommend a putter fitting session, as it really shows how you're setup properly, and your stroke fundamentals.

Sam, now THAT is a good idea... besides, if I'm willing to shell out the money for club fitting and a new set of sticks, it wouldn't make much sense for me to just grab a putter off the rack that "looks good enough." Thanks for the suggestion
