3 Woods - Optimum head size

Name make & model for tee and off the deck use.
For me and perhaps a few of us on this site this is perhaps one of the most difficult clubs to pick due to its use within the game.

Do you use yours mainly for:

- Purely for tee shots when the Driver misbehaves.
- Off the deck for par 5's only
- Both - Tee shots and going for a par 5 in 2.....

From personal use, I can comment on the following.

Callaway VFT - Awesome off the tee, but deep face design difficult for off the deck use.
Taylormade V Steel - Good for both Tee and off the deck, but perhaps launched a bit high off the tee for me, could have been the stock shaft though.
Sonartec NP99 - Flat out great off the deck, but ballooning flight and not a confident tee club due to in my opinion the head size.

From the ones listed, for me the V Steel had perhaps the most appropriate head size to perform both the tee and off the deck roles.

It would be great to here from everyone their thoughts on this. Anyone know how the 904F head size compares to the V Steel ?

Happy posting :kewlpics:

PING LST 8.5' / Stretch 13.5' / G400 17'
Callaway Apex Pro 4 to PW, Mack Daddy Forged 50, 55, 60

I got the G5 while in Myrtle, and it is great for me. At first sight I thought the face would be too deep for fairway use. I gave it a go and it replaced my TM 200. I'm embarrassed now being a one brand guy throughout the bag. Anyway it's the best of both the worlds for me. It's also nice that they have the NV and ProLaunch shaft available from the company.

Ahem.....

But perhaps we've all forgotten about a little fairway wood called the Tour Edge Exotics!

I'm not positive, but I don't think there's a better FW in existence. If you're hit it, you know what I'm talking about :kewlpics:

If you haven't, don't be afraid to get out there and give it a few whacks. Oh, and don't forget--you can always reshaft it.

There actually are a few good fairway-metaly on the market, but the for me the 904Fs are the best woods for quite some time...

Tee, tight lie, first cut, whatever they are just as good as it gets ( for me personally that is... )

Right behind you :kewlpics: I usually use mine from the tee more often than the deck, just because I play a really short course. Also, I believe the 904f is a little shorter from heel-toe than the V-Steel.

Ok, I'm going to throw a different one in that many will probably not consider but this club truly rocks. Wishon 515 GRT, smaller compact size and easy to hit out of the fairway but also has .830 COR. Easily one of the longest ones on the market. I was very impressed how easy this club is to hit and control. I use it over the OEM's and would recommend it to anyone with a decent swing.

I have a X-Tour Fairway which is superb off the deck however I have tried three woods better suited for tee shots. Personally I really liked the Ping G5 as it was very versatile off the deck but performed from the tee aswell.

Titleist TS3 10.5° w/ Tensei AV 55 Stiff
Titleist TS2 16.5° w/ Tensei AV 65 Stiff
Titleist TS2 21° w/ Tensei AV 75 Stiff
Titleist U510 23° w/ Tensei Blue AM2 Stiff
Titleist 714 AP2 5-9 w/ XP 95 S300
Vokey SM8 46°, 50°, 54°, 60° w/ XP 95 S300

I agree with the head being a little more compact than the V Steel. I've noticed some similarities in the headshape compared to the r7 FWs. Almost looks like someone at TM liked the 904F head very much... :vava:

Or maybe TM has just run out of ideas, I mean one cannot blame them anyway...

It sure is tough to maintain creativity and technical innovation when you are releasing a new set of woods every other day... :kewlpics:

( Still it has to be mentioned that the r7 is a very good FairwayMetal... )
