Driver for an Idiot???

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I read here pretty much everyday, yet don't post much as I don't have much to offer other than general agreement.

I am currently using a 905T 9.5 with an Aldila NV65S, but I hit a pretty low ball and really have to work to get it in the air. I am off 10, yet a mate off 27 (basically social player, with good timing) can hit his 8 iron higher than my wedge!! I've heard that the Aldila is tip stiff and highish kick point which I believe is exactly what I don't need.

I am wondering what to do. I need a driver that can hit the fairway. A statement that sounds funny I know, but when I'm hitting it solid, I'm looking at 300+ yards and invincible. When its bad, its horrible. 200+ yards at best. and pick a fairway, due to horror swing thoughts.

I need a driver that is very forgiving. The 905 just isn't that club. It only works for me when I'm hitting it solid. Would reshafting it be a solution? Or think along the lines of Ping G5 etc, although I'm reading about the Taylor 580, or even maybe the R5. Or R7 460???

I virtually have 2 swings. My iron swing which is very solid and confident and my driver swing, which is trepidation and ugly. Not a good combination to lower the scores.

Any help or thought would be much appreciated

My friend, you have a LOT to choose from and you should get a bunch of opinions. Reshafting will help you, but only to a point. If you have trouble getting the ball in the air, you need at a MINIMUM 11.5 degrees in a driver and a shaft that encourages a high launch. That should help. Which OEMs? Pick one. I said in an earlier post that Titleist makes drivers for lower handicaps. That is what Cobra is for...the rest of us. The Cobra M Speed, 12 degree is a great choice. The Nike SQ 13 degree is too. Taylor Made R7 425 will not only encourage a draw if needed, but be weighted for a higher launch. The TM 460 should give you more forgiveness. Cleveland, Mizuno, KZG Component, heck even Snake Eyes! Pick one. The bottom line is try them all and choose after a good sampling. Loft is important and shaft is important. If you mate the two, that will certainly help.

Loft is your friend, if your ballflight is that low (like mine is) you're probably going to want to go to at least a 10.5* driver, possibly an 11.5* driver or higher. Also, the NV is a fairly high kickpoint shaft, so that will hurt your trajectory as well. Replacing the NV with something like a ProLaunch Blue or an NVS (which keeps the shaft in the same price range) should raise your ballflight as well.

As Tbowles said, there are a number of companies out there that make higher lofted drivers (11.5* is fairly common, Nike has the "Lucky 13*", Ping has a 12* and a 13.5*, and Callaway has an 11* and a 16*, just to name a few). I would go out and try some of the higher lofted drivers, and you should be pleased with the results.

I've got a 983K now, and a 905R on the way, and neither of them are for a high launch. I had a Ping G2 before, and it went really high, but then again I had a 10* in it too. Look at a Sasquatch, as mentioned. They go high.

If I'm not mistaken, the 905R is really high launching, even more so than 905T

I HIGHLY recommend you include the MacGregor MacTec in your comparison shopping. My NVG is incredibly forgiving, and very, very long. 10.5* of loft is perfect for me, I hit this club high, straight, and loooong.

I hear the MacTec NVG2 is even better! Consider giving it a try along with TM, Titleist, Nike, etc.

I am also a low ball hitter. I play an 11* driver with a Pro Launch. This is just an awesome combo. I played 983K & Launcher 460 before my FT-3. The FT-3 is longer, higher, & more forgiving than the other 2 combined. I absolutely love my fusion. It's all-day high & long. The Clevelands would be second, they hit pretty high. Shafts for you should be Pro Launch Blue, IROD Driver (best shaft nobody's ever heard of), and NVS (easy to overpower though). Good Luck

Cleveland Launcher Comp is very forgiving, long and easy to hit high, I originally had the stock stiff shaft in my 10.5 and I had it reshafted with a Fuji TP 26.3 stiff to bring the flight down a bit. I usually hit the ball fairly low with a driver and the Comp is just the ticket. Recently I've seen new Comp's sell in the low to mid $200's from reputable sellers on EBAY. Two others to think about, especially if a good deal appeals to you, would be the Ping G2 and TM R5 Dual, both get the ball up high very easy and can be had new on EBAY for less than $200. If you're looking for a steal, you can get a new Nicklaus Airmax 440ML on EBAY for around $100, an excellent driver that is very forgiving and easy to hit high and long.

I have an R5TP w/Aldida NVS 65 shaft @9.5* - this thing really lauches them high and long. Ive also hit the regular R5 - pretty much the same except for a little better feel and sound. I suggest saving the money and just getting the R5. Just wondering were you are playing the ball in your stance. Maybe you are delofting (is this a word? -lol) your clubs by playing them too far back in your stance. You know Jack Nicholas says that you should play your wedge very close to the middle of your stance. Try teeing the ball off the toe of your lead foot instead of the heel. I found this very helpful when hitting the deep face drivers. Also drop your left shoulder slightly (if your a right hander). This helps also - at least for my swing.

You may also consider the Ping G2. You can get these off ebay pretty cheap. Buy the way, playing off a 10 makes you far from a golf idiot ( I can't comment on other aptitudes, I don't know you that well). The majority of avid golfers shoot in the high 90s average and most people will never break 80 in their lifetime. At least you had the sense to realize you may have an equipment issue and are looking to resolve it. Good luck!!!

I second this. The Launcher Comp puts it in the air higher than any driver I have ever seen. Get a 10.5 with the NVS or Prolaunch and you can't go wrong. These can be had cheap on Ebay.

I have to agree. I've hit many different drivers and for me the Launcher Comp hit higher than anything else I have tried. I tend to also hit low with a driver but the Comp was actually too high in the loft I was testing (9.5* and I usually play a 10* at minimum). For a low ball hitter, I don't think the Comp can be beat. It is also quite long and forgiving.
