High Right Hip

Recommended Posts

Was it really......... if so why was it high
I've seen it written many times in various places that Mr. Hogan had a high right hip at address
and into the back swing. Was this purposed? Was it just camera angles? If it truly was a factor
in his swing makeup......... what then was the purpose? DTS

Looks level to me in this image.......

THere is a thread about it being a "high right hip", but I think it is :"high" only in the sense it is relative to a low right hip set up, not to be interpreted as higher than the left hip (at address). But in that second picture, it definately looks above the left at the top of the backswing.

And is it possible that he had a high right hip so he can TURN his whole right side back without getting too flat and underplane... as opposed to having more of an xfactor upper body backswing. I think of it as his way of swinging "in a barrell" without getting too flat. JMO ... I could be 100% wrong.

Dariusz,

Here you are in a response to slicefixer from Jan. 18, 2008 referring to the HRH.... DTS

"This sentence is very important ! I believe this question may be also important: don't you think that both "unnecessary" things, i.e. high right hip and CoG shift were only compensations for each other ?

Hogan was reported to say that he hated "the shift"...thus, you may be dead right" (as usually...;-)

Cheers

Where was Hogan reported to say he "hated" this shift?

Telling Schlee.

Claimed it was the compensation of a crippled man.

More than likely it was. If Hogan wanted to get into a position over his left side where he could unwind level left unimpeded, he did not want his rotation to stop for anything, then a high right hip or MORE OF A SHIFT IS WHAT WE'RE REALLY TALKING ABOUT I THINK doesn't have much purpose but merely something extra or a compensation for something.............maybe an injury causing something to be uncomfortable. In any event, the pivot must be on the left side in order to clear level left while having the club attacking from good angles...............or.............the angles Hogan came from to be more exact and have his impact conditions.

I have nothing important to add to what both EJ and Magnum said (both very fine posts, BTW). I think Geoff, as a huge fan of reverse-K set up could say "high right hip" and "unnecessary shift" in this context.

I repeat - in my honest opinion, Hogan had level hips at set up that would mechanically require a linear motion for a CoG transfer in the pelvis area.

Cheers

There's more to this HRH than meets some eyes. I see Hogan using this to his distinct advantage. I'm with the thoughts expressed by ej002....... that is that the appearance of

a HRH is a relative thing but "real" none-the-less and it's purpose is that of a restrictor

mechanism to impede, in a purposed way, the body from going "round the corner" and out

of plane. dts

DTS: Good points, I agree... the right hip allowed him to turn INTO his right side as opposed to OVER his right side and restricted his backswing-- allowing for a 'rebound' against resistance on the downswing... Also the high right hip on the backswing is necessary for counterbalance... if your going to maintain your spine angle in the swing, then the right hip is counterbalance for the chest and upper body, just as the left hip is counterbalance at impact and follow thru... If you going to maintain your bent over spine angle in a dynamic swing, it is critical the hips NOT be level, or it will shoot your spine angle up causing you to stand up a bit and come out of the shot.

  • 1 month later...

The hips turn like the shoulders do so in that case you might as well say he has a high right shoulder on the back swing. Hogan at address had level hips you can see that in any photo, but as long as the butt continues to move back and the left knee bends in, the left hip is going to point more down in a pivot like Hogans. I would not look to much into it, Hogan had a swing that worked for him and there is no secret that he had where everyone would bennifit by, Hogan just worked hard to repeat what he knew worked for him to not pull hook the ball.

I remeber watching the Hogan video in Mexico. The view that he is hitting a driver and you can only see above the knee it looks that when he turns into his right leg it lifts the right hip about an inch or two. It seems natural for the hip to rise in this manner when the "straight" right leg is bracing the turn while the left knee breaks in. Or possibly it is a bit of an illusion because the left hip drops?? In any case it would not supprise me if he fooled around with different tilts of his hips at address at many times during his dirt digging.
