Cedar Point 2007 offical thread

Recommended Posts

for any thrill junkies
Okay, I’m a roller coaster junkie, equal to my obsession with golf. When a park breaks ground on a new coaster, I’m pumped up, and this has got me pumped up really good. Roller coaster mecca Cedar Point has done just this, they’ve already cleared land, and removed/moved other rides. See it here

Now, this has me excited for a few reasons.

#1) In 2003 Cedar Point opened Top Thrill Dragster, the former record holder for height (420 ft) and speed (120 mph). Since then, the record has been broken, and the owner of Cedar Point, Kinsel (don’t know his first name) vowed he would outdo Top Thrill Dragster some day. Thing is, after the 2007 season, Kinsel is leaving Cedar Point.

#2) The clearing of land. Cedar Point has already built their new ride, Skyhawk, for 2006, so this land is clearly for 2007. In early August 2002, Cedar Point started clearing land on the site where Top Thrill Dragster would stand the next year. Now, Cedar Point is clearing land this winter! So, this may possibly be an early indicator on the shear magnitude of this ride. In addition, Cedar Point is located on a small penninsula in Lake Erie, with minimal space left for large coasters. Unless they tear down other coasters, where they are putting this ride appears to be the last spot for a really large coaster.

#3) Cedar Fair, who owns Cedar Point as well as numerous other parks across the country, recently signed a deal with coaster builder B&M. Since that signing, every park except for Cedar Point has recieved a coaster from that company, or is building one right now. Question is, did Cedar Point get anything in that deal?

#4) Cedar Point has won the race to each hundred mark level. Magnum XL-200 (1989) was the first coaster to break the 200 foot mark. Millennium Force was the first to break 300 feet, and Top Thrill Dragster was the first to break 400 feet. The current record holder is Kingda Ka, at 456 feet and 128 mph. So, Cedar Point may be looking into the 500 foot range to contine it's tradition of being the first.

#5) Big rides cost big bucks. Top Thrill Dragster's cost was in excess of $20 million. Located at Six Flags Great Adventure, Kingda Ka's cost was $25 million. With Six Flags in a financial bind right now, this could be Cedar Point's opportunity to get the record back, and keep it for a while, because only they have the finances to pull something like this off.

That’s it for now, I’ll update this post as I get more information. Questions are welcomed.

Big Update guys. Track has arrived at Cedar Point, but everytime pieces come in, Cedar Point employees cover it up with tarps ASAP. Clearly they didn't want anyone to know, but the secret is out, check here for pics and updates. PointBuzz is the unofficial source for all Cedar Point Rumors.

Some bird's eye views of the site more pics

More when I see it.

I am from South Carolina, but went to Cedar Point in 1988. Back when the Magnum was the tallest rollercoaster. Had to ride it alone because no one would go with me. You believe that!? I was 13 years old! Scared the crap out me. What a ride though. Sat by some old man who was a thrill seeker and prayed that I wasn't going to have to give him CPR. Dentures, you understand.

Cedar Point has announced Maverick this thursday. Took me by complete surprise, stepping all over my theories of tall and fast. Cedar Point said a few months back they were going in a new direction, and that new direction is clearly building not only a coaster that DOESN'T break any records, but building a coaster that has a ton of theming around it, as this coaster clearly does.

Cedar Point said with this coaster, they were trying to go for the fun factor, not the brief speed/height record. The videos make this fact clearly apparent.

Hats off to fooling everyone Cedar Point with a new breed of roller coaster!
