Need Help on Finding Course in Pinehurst Area

Recommended Posts

I just moved to Cary NC and Im looking for some good courses to play. Anyone with knowledge of that area please do tell me what courses are on the top of your list...

I'm looking for the best value, don't want to play a clunker, but I don't need Pinehurst #2. Something around 50-80 bucks (if thats even possible) would be great.

Thanks Guys

Tobacco Road in Sanford (about 3/4 of the way from Cary to Pinehurst) is a well-known course although a funky Mike Strantz design with blind shots, etc. Closer to Cary, try River Ridge in Raleigh, the Preserve at Jordan Lake, the Duke University golf course, or the UNC-Finley golf course. The latter two are university courses, but always ranked highly.

Tobacco Road in Sanford. Most definitely worth a visit. Watch for deals. They usually float around some 50$ deals.

Around the Triangle I would definitely give River Ridge (SE Raleigh) and The Neuse (Clayton) a try. Both are very nice courses and have $25-$30 twilight rates.

As for the Pinehurst area, the best budget round is at Hyland Hills as it always has been. Very decent course for the $$. If you liked Tobacco Road you might as well try The Pit it should be priced similarly. As for an old school course I would try and get on at the Pine Needles resort. They usually float some deals around and offered as a part of many packages. There's no shortage of great golf courses in that area but some of the best are very cost prohibitive. Just keep you eyes open and check sites like Last Minute Golfer for some good deals.

I'll echo the sentiments already about Tobacco Road and The Neuse. Another favorite of mine is Anderson Creek in Sring Lake. A great Davis Love desgin that always has fantastic email offers. I also love UNC-Finley!!

Check out this Sandhills sampler. It's a great deal and will drag you all around the Pinehurst, Souther Pines, Whispering Pines area. If nothing else you will be able to negotiate the traffic circle.

That's a great deal. Although I haven't played Southern Pines CC recently, all the locals are giving the course great reviews.

Around the Raleigh/Cary area some good courses are - Heritage, UNC Finley, Duke, Chapel Ridge, Eagle Ridge, Mill Creek, Lonnie Poole (soon). I find most courses in the area you'd be better off to be part billy goat though.

A lot of course don't follow any type of structured fairway, too much downhill, sidehill, etc. lies from dead in the middle of the fairway and way too much target golf.

Tobacco Road is a must! If you are willing to go a little further down highway 64 is Tot Hill Farm, it's sister course. It's absolutely wonderful, I feel like I rave about incessantly to everyone I know, but it truly is my favorite course.

As much as I hate to endorse anything Duke or Carolina :russian_roulette: , those are both tracks you cannot miss out on as well.

The NC State course is supposed to be done soon. Arnold Palmer design. A Deamon Deacon designing the Wolfpacks golf course. :cheesy: Lots of good golf in the area, you will find it.

It will be open to the public in two weeks! Very reasonable rates right off of Lake Wheeler near downtown if you work in Raleigh. I'm a bit biased, but I think it will go down as one of the best tracks in the Raleigh area when it's established itself.

Southern Pines (The Elks) is a great course. To my mind it is equal to Mid Pines, maybe just a notch below Pine Needles. I would definitely recommend playing at least one Ross course when you're in the Sandhills.

I definitely agree as well. The Elks is something you cannot miss out on either. They were running a special a few weeks ago on weekday green fees, if I can find it I will post it.

Don't forget about Knights Play up the road on Ten Ten either! It's a great driving range/par-3 course that is open until midnight each night with excellent lighting. Imo it's the best place to practice in the area, and they have some great green fees deals that make practicing very reasonable.

I agree completely. Tot Hill has become one of my favorite courses. Others include...

The Pit
Little River
Foxfire (east course)
The Legacy
The Carolina

All are some what affordable courses. Very high quality, but not the top tier (high dollar) area courses.
