Hogan Education

I was wondering what books/videos, besides 5 Lessons, would you recommend for learning about all things Hogan? Are the Hogan Collection DVD's good? I have been a follower of the Hogan debates on here for some time and would like to learn more.

I second what HoganAfficionado recommended.

As regards BH Collection DVD - despite some not so perfect McLean's analysis it is a masterpiece. The interactive discs with 4 swings is just a reason alone to have it.

I have read the Sampson book and I have the Hogan vs. Snead video. Both excellent.

"A Hard Case From Texas" is probably the most underrated video out there IMO. It has great swing footage from every era of Hogan's swing. His swing changed significantly throughout his career and it is very instructive to observe the differences.

 

"In Pursuit of Perfection" is inferior IMO, because the footage is strictly from the 1967 Masters practice tee, so Hogan was about 53 years old and pretty physically beat up by this time. Ignore Clem's narrative although he makes a few good points.

 

My "must have" videos would include "Hard Case" and "The Ben Hogan Collection" (produced by McTee, a Golfwrx'er). The Mexico City footage is great too, as Hogan was very close to his ballstriking prime and there are some unique angles filmed.

 

Shell's WWoG "Snead vs. Hogan" is fantastic if just for the high speed instructive swing at the end. A priceless piece of video.

 

The best part of the Coleman video is his detailed explanation of the grip.

I'm about a fifth through "An American Life". So far I enjoyed Sampon's book much more. Sampon's book seemed to draw me in and was more of a story, where Dodson's is more like a factual/historical documentary of random facts about Hogan and the people around him. But it has some story to it as well. I will definitely finish it.
