flex in driver...

vs irons
what up golfers....i got fitted for a driver the other day and golf pro expert suggest that i should get a stiff flex shaft (graphite) in my driver......now does this go the same way in irons (steel) and fw woods (graphite). currently, for my irons and fw woods, i play a regular. i can't really make it to a shop right now cause i live a good ways away from a reputable shop.

does you swing speed from a driver differ from your irons, meaning do you swing faster with your driver then you would with your irons, fw, etc.

i'm close to about 100 (+/- 5 or so) for my swing speed.....i just don't have consistent ball striking abilities.......

holla back with an answer yo!

I just purchased a new Driver head and am in the process of trying to identify

the right shaft for me also. I currently use a TaylorMade R580, 8.5 degrees loft

with the stock MAS shaft (stiff). My swing speed is in the 103 - 108 mph range

with a launch angle of approximately 10 degrees. The head that I'm going to

is 10.5 degrees. At first, I was interested in the Aldila NV-75 (the green shaft), but

after the session with the swing analyzer, I am going with the NVS 75(orange shaft)

it is a little more tip flexible and should give me the desired launch angle of 13 - 15

degrees...... For what it's worth, I figure I hit the driver about 240 - 250 carry........

awesome.....i didn't know shortger irons swing differ. from longer irons, etc........will consider this.....and also will consider the option of all flex the same......i'm just a little confuse right now.....putting all ego-macho aside.....reg flex might be a little whippy for my ss. but i will see how this goes the first few rounds......i might be reshafting my set anyways but was just wondering!

holla!

Hermes, after experimenting with many graphite and steel shaft combo's I am absolutely better served by most stiff graphite shafts in my woods and most highly regarded regular flex steel shafts (rifle 5.0, DG/DGSL/DLG R300, Nippon 1050 reg.) in my irons. I suppose I might use stiff steel in my irons if I regularly played in very windy conditions but when that occasionally happens I club up and use a shorter swing with the desired trajectory results and I'm definitely not a low handicapper (10-15 over the last several years). Regarding steel shafted irons, there are several stock OEM offerings that I've tried that I would choose the stiff as opposed to regular (RAC OS, Nike Slinshot, Cleveland TA6) because those shafts felt excessively soft to me. As others noted, flex requirements depend on more than just swing speed, I usually swing hard with my woods but I almost never try to force an iron shot. For what it's worth my driver SS is right there with yours and my 150 yard club is generally a 7-iron.

It's all what feels good to you and gives you the results you want. For me, I play slightly stiffer shafts in my irons than my woods. Irons are S300, and woods my clubfitter builds for me at S100. I tend to go after my irons a little harder. The shorter shafts in irons just make me feel more confident to do so, plus I want more accuracy in my irons. The woods are teed up generally, so they don't have to resist twisting as much and the longer length is tougher to control of course. I try to not over-swing with the driver and 3 wood, so the S100 feels better and is easier to load properly. This has all been trial and error, and just figuring out how I play the game best.

i feel that i am a very consistent ball striker, as i have been hitting around 7-8 greens per 9 holes ( not enough light to play 18 on school days) and i use stiff in everything, but regular in my irons. R300 for irons and stiff v2 and YS in wood and driver. SS is around 100-105. Off the tee im about 280-290

I'm using regular flex in my woods and X100s in my irons. It was interesting because I swung both my irons and woods by taking normal swings (this was during a fitting) and it turned out I was much slower with my woods so that's what I went with and can't be happier! I had thought all my flexes were the exact same before, but after the fitting it's obvious I was mistaken.
