PGA Stats and Tiger HUH?

Boy when they say figures lie and liars figure they weren't kidding. Looking at the PGA stats Tiger is rated 92 in scrambling and 47 in putting. Those are supposed to be his strong suit considering his hideous driving accuracy. His distance is quite a ways behind the big bombers as well. I guess the only thing you can put his success on so far is his GIR (2nd). But that can also be a statement on how the courses are set up (nothing like U.S. Open rough).

Take a look at his last round last week - I believe it was 16 GIR, missed 17 and 18 and failed to get up and down both times (0/2). I bet if he gets up and down both times he jumps 20 spots up the rankings. When you're only missing a couple of greens a round, any missed up and down opps are going to really hurt the stats early in the year. Wait until he gets more rounds in, the stats will come more in line.

In 2000, he was 1st and 2nd in those two stats. That's why he won tournaments by 15 shots. Noone can compete with that.

2nd and 47th is pretty impressive. His GIR from not on the fairway is about 73% itself. It seems to make very little difference whether he's in the fairway or not as to whether he hits the green.

But also check his driving distance and accuracy that year as well. I believe he was 1st in overall driving as well. There really wasn't an area he was weak except maybe sand saves which he has recently improved greatly on (last 3 years).

It only goes to prove that GIR and putting stats are the most important to keep track of and is what makes low scores. Driving distance, driving accuracy and FIR has very little impact on results.

Ding Ding Ding!

Give that man a cigar! :) :)

If you are hitting greens in regulation and your putting is decent that translates into a lot of pars and birdies. It really doesn't matter how you get a GIR. Some guys HAVE TO HIT FAIRWAYS to go from the green in regulation and some guys don't. What separates the elite players on the PGA Tour from the also-rans is they can get into a little trouble off the tee and still hit a decent second shot on par 4's or third shot on par's 5's to either save par or at least give themselves a chance at birdie.

After GIR and putting the next important stat is scrambling. If you can save par after you get into trouble consistently you not going to drop too far down any leader board.

92nd in scrambling certainly isn't anything to yell about so for Tiger it must be totally GIR and moderately good putting.

If you look at his performance at Doral he excelled at getting GIR's and his putting was good. If you are hitting 14 out of 18 GIR or 16 out of 18 GIR then you not going a lot of scrambling.

thesandtrap.com has a few write ups in the numbers game regarding the importance of GIR and putting (putts per round and putts per GIR). They examine the PGA and LPGA.

The results are eye opening if you think driving distance and accuracy are the most important items.

I just came from the PGA Tour website and they keep some pretty interesting stats that don't get talk about a lot when watch a golf telecast. For example:

GIR % From Other Than Fairway - Tiger leads in this stat with 72.6% which I think is downright AMAZING

Scrambling from the Rough - Fred Couples leads this category with 76.7%

Do they keep track of Green In UNDER Reg OR Putts per Green In UNDER Reg? I'm guessing Tiger may have several two putt birdies which should count as two putts for a GIR (if there is distinction between in reg and in under reg).

If memory serves me correctl there are stats for putts per GIR and putts per hole. And I also believe the record the total number of putts in a round.
